Last year the Colonist football team finished the Sunset League race in third place behind four-time winner Fullerton and runner-up Newport Harbor and ahead of Santa Ana, Orange and Huntington Beach.
This season the only team that seems certain of retaining last year's position in the league ladder is champion Fullerton High. They are undefeated in their practice games thus far this year, and although those games really don't prove anything constructive, they do lend one to feel that the team does have possibilities.
Certainly a team that has an all-CIF fullback on the team and several returning lettermen on the squad that has beaten some of the better schools in the state, then I think one can't afford to take them too lightly.
They are truly the team to beat in the league race this year as they have been for the past four and probably for the next four. They are working on a 22-game reigning streak in league competition. They haven't tested defeat by the hands of a league team since their league opener in 1957 with Newport.

They are truly the team to beat in the league race this year as they have been for the past four and probably for the next four. They are working on a 22-game winning streak in league competition. They haven't tested defeat for the hands of a league team since their league opener in 1957 with Newport.
The Sailors won that game 7-0 and since then the Brayers of Fullerton have rolled over everyone connected with the same league they are in.
Another team working on a streak is Huntington Beach who hasn't won a league game for over two years. They didn't win a league game last year, the year before and lost their final two in the preceding year. So, it should be some farce Saturday night at Huntington Beach when Fullerton leap out onto the field to tangle with Ed Goddard, the ex-Fullerton coach of last year and his "undefeated" team of 1951.
Both Goddard and Dick Spaulding of the Fullerton team have stated that the team that wins this game will go on and win the league race rather easily. This may be right, in the case of Fullerton winning, but if Huntington gets bent, I feel that they will wind up the league season with two and possibly three losses.
Anheim has a well rounded team that can be demonstrated in their practice games, keep up with just about any team for one half and play ten match ball for a while at least. They are good and tough in the line and pose a lot of speed in the backfield.
Newport is weak from end to end and from quarterback to fullback, but knowing Coach Ralph Reed he is one not to count out when the chips are down and for him, they are down this season.
Orange has a new coach directing the Panther attack and with several prospects from out of the league, they could cause some one a little trouble.
Santa Ana had a lot of injuries and several players dropped from the squad because of lack of study with the books. They still have Coach Bill Cole and have the largest school enrollment to draw talent from. Even while losing to Fullerton for the last years they blending 35 freshmen and 32 sophomores into a squad that lost 18 lettermen by graduation.
"I think most coaches feel that if they have to use green kids in a game, they prefer to put them on defense where they have comparatively fewer things to learn than on offensive," Voights explained.
Coast Baseball Top Subject In Ball Probe
WASHINGTON UP—Phil Wrigley, owner of the Chicago Cubs and the Los Angeles Pacific coast league team, was today's top-billed witness before Congressmen investigating whether baseball is a monopoly.
Wrigley fits right in where yesterday's testimony left off. The House Judiciary subcommittee handling the probe centered all day yesterday on the farm system, and in particular the Pacific coast league.
Leslie O'Connor, a Chicago lawyer who is counsel for the coast league, was the chief witness. O'Connor was for 23 years a close adviser to baseball's first commissioner, Judge Kenesaw M. Landis. He told the Congressmen Landis did not like the farm system, but that he, O'Connor, liked it even less.
O'Connor said the farm system is "on its way" to destroying the structure of organized baseball. This, he said, was because the farm system allows major teams to hold down good players (if a farm club, for instance, signs a good second baseman, but the major club already has one, the former may be put into "cold storage"); and because minor league farm teams lose revenue through inability to sell players.
The farm system allows major league teams to own, or control, minor league teams.
But O'Connor said he did not know how baseball could drop the farm system now, without causing considerable upheaval.
On the Pacific coast situation, O'Connor gave the Congressmen

The farm system allows major league teams to own, or control, minor league teams.
But O'Connor said he did not know how baseball could drop the farm system now, without causing considerable upheaval.
On the Pacific coast situation, O'Connor gave the Congressmen a peek at a plan he said is being worked out to meet objections from the west. These are that the big leagues are keeping the Pacific coast from having its own big league, or having big league teams moved from the east to the west.
He said he could not discuss details, but that one change would be a provision allowing a Pacific coast player to indicate in his contract whether he would be subject to draft by a big league team. Another strong objection from the west coast has been to a baseball law allowing the majors to take one player, at a stipulated price. $10,000 from each Pacific coast team.
O'Connor also said the coast loop is thinking about becoming an independent league, freeing itself from its present ties to the eastern majors.
He strongly recommended this, in place of Los Angeles or San Francisco taking over present big league franchises.
O'Connor said Wrigley had told him he would "rather have Los Angeles than Chicago."

Anaheim Cee Team Travels to Santa Ana Tomorrow for Sunset League Opener
Tomorrow at 3 p.m., the Anaheim Cee football team will open their Sunset League schedule against the Cee's from Santa Ana on the Saints field.
In other league games around the league will find Fullerton's defending champs at Huntington coach fighting the little Gushers while the little gobblets from Newport will travel to Orange.
The Anaheim team is supposed to be, and is by all indications, the best Cee team to represent the school in quite a few years. Although they have only played in one game this year, they suppressed the foe (Orange) rather easily and in their scrimmage's did the same.
The team, coached by director Athletics at the local high Dick Glover and assisted by Dick Ryan, run and pass from T-foration with Paul Grover being the T-quarterback.
Grover has been the inspiration of the team with his steady nerves and brilliant signal-calling. He can pass extremely well combined with his tricky running he presents a dangerous obstacle to the enemy. They never know exactly just what he is going to do.

Ward will Tackle Foe with Teeth
COLLEGE PARK, Md. (P)—All-America guard Bob Ward of Maryland modestly tried to sidetrack pre-season interviewers by talking about "my brother at Columbia who's going to be good, too."
Not quite as good as he, though.
The 23-year-old Bob was voted Associated Press lineman of the week for leading Maryland in the 43-7 wreck of Georgia Saturday, although he played 37 minutes with a broken finger.
Al, 20-year-old defensive end, was among those nominated for the same honor for his part in Columbia's 14-0 triumph over Yale.
It's the first time in the Associated Press lineman voting that brothers have been nominated for the same honor. An older brother, Jim, was captain of the 1949 Columbia team.
Bob was chosen lineman of the week over 12 others, including All-America's Les Richter, California guard, and Jim Weatherall, Oklahoma tackle. Other nominees included Bill McColl, Stanford end.
Bob has been a regular guard since his first game as a freshman. His teammates have voted him their most valuable player every year.
Trainer Duke Wyre of Maryland sums up the feeling Ward produces in those who've seen him play. Asked if a broken finger suffered against Georgia will hamper his performance?
Colonist Foes Hold Edge in Statistics
Team statistics for the Anaheim varsity's four practice games with Redlands (6-7), Chaffey (9-23, Citrus (19-6) and Coquina (7-12) show that first downs are the same for the Colonists and their opponents while the yardage gained is in the favor of the enemy.
Anaheim's opponents have tried more passes and have run the ball more and as a result hold too edge over the locals in regard to team statistics for the first four games of the 1951 grid season.
Neither Anaheim nor its opponents have scored one single point in the first quarter of their games and each of the other periods are teped by opponent scoring.

Indian Chief not Ready for Knife
NEW YORK (UP) If Allie Reynolds has his way, his good-albeit rattling—right elbow will continue sounding like a pair of castanets next season.
The Chief, first pitcher in American League history to hurl two no-hit games in one season, has decided not to have his elbow operated on for removal of some loose bone chips.
"I was pitching too well down the stretch to take a chance on an operation now," he said. "Naturally Dr. (George) Bennett cannot guarantee the result of an operation. As a matter of fact, he says the elbow is much improved over last spring."
Ted Kluszewski of the Cincinnati Reds has never made a sacrifice hit since he has been in the major leagues.
