Non-conformists Mr. and Mrs. Leighton Ross have built a home which is a little different. The story is on Page 5. VOLUME LXXX Anaheim's FIRST Newspaper ANA GEE! A MOVIE STAR — Anaheim’s Miss Slick Chick contestants were jolted out of their usual caum demeanor yesterday when they posed for a shot with Michael Patrick Casey, center, up-and-coming young cinema star. From left, top row, are Gwen Keithley, Jeanie Marquise, Dodie Tangney; second row, Jymmie Hurley, Joanne Clark, Elaine Brattlof, Tabbe Averill; third row, Ruth Raum, Delores Wolleman, Casey, Jen Cordier, Mary Lou Gastelum (heaviest reaction to Casey’s charm), Lucille Douthit; fourth row, Rose Lopez, Dianne Cash and Carolyn Haney. Michael Patrick Casey, Rising Young Movie Star, to Emcee ‘Chick’ Ball By JOAN S. WHITE A well known personality from the glittering realm of movie land will preside master of ceremonies at the “Slick Chick” Masquerade Ball at the Elks club on Oct. Michael Patrick Casey is his name, a great guy who is handsome in a clean cut, san haired sort of a way. And girls, he is twenty-two, unmarried—and not even engaged! Mike caused quite a sensation yesterday when he casually strolled into the E club to meet the contestants in the “Slick Chick” contest. Some twenty of Anaheim’s you McCracken Trial Recessed Today Near Mid-Point Trial of Henry Ford McCracken’s insanity plea, by which he hopes to escape the San Quentin gas chamber for the murder of Patty Jean Hull. 10, was at recess today until next Monday, with nearly half of the expected testimony now before the jury. Dr. W. S. Musfelt, Santa Ana psychiatrist, last of three experts appointed by the court to testify in the case, barely started his testimony yesterday afternoon before court adjourned. Like the two alienists who preceded him on the witness stand, Dr. Musfelt already had filed his written report with the court, expressing the opinion that McCracken, although a sex psycho-lovelles were on hand to have their pictures taken, but were not expecting to meet a movie star. Perhaps it was the easy way he wore a light grey suit in contrast with a blue jersey shirt; perhaps it was his disarming grin. Anyway an admiring ring of girls quickly formed around him and it was with difficulty that we wormed our way through the crowd for an interview. There is none of the usual movietown conceit about Michael Patrick Casey (that is his real name, by the way). We had to coax a little to get his background. Seems he is under contract at Columbia Studios where he is presently hard at work on a picture called “Battle Stations” with Pat O’Brien. Most of the scenes for this picture are being shot in San Pedro, aboard a destroyer there. Mike got his start in the navy where he so successfully took part in amateur theatricals that he Problems of Age To be Considered SACRAMENTO (P) — Seven thousand persons will gather here at Governor Warren’s invitation next week to consider what can done to help 870,000 of their fellow Californians—the men and women over 65—live better lives. In small discussion groups a full general sessions they will wish for two days on such problems: housing, employment, recreation and public assistance for the growing ranks of California’s seri-citizens. The meeting was called, War said in a statement today, order to provide a public forum for the consideration and evaluation of existing policies and programs and to make recommendations for the future." The conference will begin Monday with an address by the governor. Dr. W. S. Musfelt, Santa Ana psychiatrist, last of three experts appointed by the court to testify in the case, barely started his testimony yesterday afternoon before court adjourned. Like the two alienists who preceded him on the witness stand, Dr. Musfelt already had filed his written report with the court, expressing the opinion that McCracken, although a sex psychopath, is legally sane. Dr. M. W. Conway of Santa Ana and Dr. Hyman Tucker, acting superintendent of Norwalk State hospital, who already have testified, added their oral statements that McCracken, in their opinion, is legally sane. Dr. Tucker, who completed his testimony late yesterday, rejected a defense theory that the hallucinations McCracken claimed to have in his motel cabin at the time Patty Hull was killed there last May 19, might have been an epileptic seizure. There was nothing in McCracken's history to indicate any previous sign of epilepsy, and the disease does not come on suddenly after adult life is reached, Dr. Tucker said. Answering a 20 minute hypothetical question by the defense which contained as assumptions all of the acts and hallucinations McCracken claimed to have experienced in the motel cabin, including the talking-dog, Dr. Tucker said in substance that he had never heard of any such situation and could not assume that anything like that had ever happened. Temperature reading in downtown Anaheim at 1:80 p.m. today was 78. High for the previous 24 hours was 79 at 3 p.m. yesterday. Low was 60 at 6 a.m. today. Planners Delay Kersten Sand Pit Attempt by Dr. E. H. Kersten of Anaheim to obtain permit to a sand and gravel pit on Gilbert st., near Crescent ave., in West Anaheim district was still delayed by the county planning commission today in view of neighboring opposition. The commission, at yesterday session, decided to wait for information from the county floor control engineer on plans for future development of the flood control spreading basin near the Kersten property. A petition opposing Dr. Kersten's permit application has been filed with the planning commission by 70 property owners in the area. NAHEIM EST. 1870 GAZETE paper ANAHEIM, ORANGE COUNTY, CALIFORNIA, FRIDAY, OCTOBER 12, 1951 Reds Charge Allied Planes Ten Per Cent of MWD Vote Power In County MWD Orange county territory belonging to the Metropolitan Water district, if the Orange County Municipal Water district is annexed to MWD at next Tuesday's special election, will have approximately one-tenth of the voting strength of MWD, according to figures received here today by officials of the municipal water district. The new municipal water district, with an assessed property valuation of about $248,000,000, would have 25 votes on the MWD board, which would include a total of 431 votes for all MWD territory. The cities of Santa Ana, Anaheim and Fullerton, and Coastal Municipal Water district, which includes Newport Beach, Laguna Beach, Costa Mesa and Communist’s Claim 3 Planes Kill Child in Peace Zone MUNSAN, Korea, Saturday (AP)—Hopes for reelection the Korean truce talks were rocked today by a commute that three Allied fighter planes strafed the Panjom area, killing a Korean boy and wounding another. Allied liaison officers made a preliminary investiture of the red accusation during the darkness last night and early today and decided to resume their inquiry at 9 a.m. (4 p.m. Friday, PST). Panmunjom is the site agreed upon for possible renewal of the Korean armistice talks which the reds suspended at Kaesong Aug. 23. Liaison officers for both sides had haggled for the past three days over such technicalities as defining a new neutral zone around Panmunjom preparatory to resuming the full-dress talks. The communists Friday night British-French Proposals Revealed NEW YORK (AP)—The York Times quoted informer Nicola's in Washington today saying the United States, alm and France soon will the following proposals to: 1. The 20-year Anglo-Iran treaty of 1936, which is moving to abrogate, be replaced by a new international agreement for creating a near eastern command. 2. Egypt would be an member of this command. The new municipal water district, with an assessed property valuation of about $248,000,000, would have 25 votes on the MWD board, which would include a total of 431 votes for all MWD territory. The cities of Santa Ana, Anaheim and Fullerton, and Coastal Municipal Water district, which includes Newport Beach, Laguna Beach, Costa Mesa and Brea, have an aggregate of 18 votes. Thus the total Orange county vote would be 43, or 10 per cent of the 431 total MWD vote, it was pointed out by Col. M. B. Wellington, counsel for the new municipal water district and Coastal Municipal Water district. There are now 403 votes in MWD, with Los Angeles holding half of them, having 56 per cent of the total valuation, which regulates voting representation, but being limited to half of the voting power by the MWD act. Los Angeles at one time had 85 per cent of the assessed valuation of MWD but annexations have reduced its valuation percentage to 56, and this will drop more with the addition of the Orange county Municipal Water district and the Chino basin, which votes on annexation the same day, Oct. 16. Prospective annexation of the Los Angeles county central basin, with a valuation of $750,000,000, and the likelihood of early annexation of Riverside, San Bernardino, Redlands and Colton, where annexation sentiment is said to be strong, is expected to reduce Los Angeles's valuation below the 50 per cent mark. When that happens, Col. Wellington pointed out, the Los Angeles vote also will be reduced below 50 per cent for the first time. Total MWD valuation at present is about $4,700,000. With the Orange county Municipal Water district and Chino basin added, it will go above $5,000,000. Gypsies Fleece Lagunan of $1449 Gypsy fortune tellers in Santa Ana induced his wife to purchase a $1449 order of furniture for them here today by officials of the municipal water district. Liaison officers for both sides had haggled for the past three days over such technicalities as defining a new neutral zone around Panmunjom preparatory to resuming the full-dress talks. The communists Friday night at 7 p.m., however, suddenly telephoned the U. N. advance camp at Munson and charged that a U. N. plane had attacked the old Kaesong neutral zone at 5:35 p.m. (12:34 a.m. PST). They gave no details over the telephone. Three-Plane Raid Air Force Col. Don C. Darrow and Army Lt. Col. Norman D. Edwards went at once to Panmunjom to investigate. It turned out that the reds charged a three-plane raid on the Panmunjom area. Panmunjom, a wayside village, is six miles southeast of Kaesong and 13 miles northwest of Munson. Gypsies Fleece Lagunan of $1449 Gypsy fortune tellers in Santa Ana induced his wife to purchase a $1449 order of furniture for them from a Los Angeles mail order firm, shortly before she entered a sanitarium, John Henry Horton, of Laguna Beach, informed Santa Ana police today. After she was in the sanitarium, Norton learned from the Los Angeles firm that payment of $54 per month was in arrears, and the sum of $690 still was due. She had paid $759. The furniture was delivered at 719 S. Main st., where the fortune tellers were then located, police said. They were later ordered to leave Santa Ana and are now reported to be in the east. Norton has placed the matter in the hands of an attorney, he told police. SEN. KNOWLAND TO SPEAK HERE Senator William F. Two Firms Compete for Junior High Architectural Contracts Final three architectural firms seeking appointment to draw plans for the proposed two new junior high schools in Anaheim were interviewed by the Anaheim high school board of trustees last night at the regular monthly meeting. Representatives from G. Stanley Wilson; Orr, Strange and Instee and Marsh Smith and Powell were interviewed last night which ended a long line of firm representatives who have appeared at the last three or four meetings. After some discussion and an informal vote, it was decided to invite representatives from Marsh, Smith and Powell (who were architects for the Thomas Jefferson school), and Daniel, Mann, Johnson and Mendenhall, back tonight and 6 and 7 o'clock respectively for a final approval of one of the firms. Everett Cone, trustee, using figures quoted on a recent Francis Dunn report, estimated the cost of the two new buildings to reach about $3,000,000. According to the Francis Dunn chart of rising prices, statistics taken from 143 schools over a period of the past five years showed the minimum cost of schools, per square foot, just before the Korean war was $7.85. Since the war, prices have skyrocketed until the minimum cost per square foot in a school is now $10.80. Immediately after the interviews were over, Paul Demarece, principal of AUHS, told the board that the need for settling on the moving on to other business of the evening, the board appointed Bud Hein to take care of the athletic field. Home economics teacher, Mrs. Barbara Walker, received the blessings of the board, with expenses paid, for her trip to Aslomar, near San Francisco, during Oct. 12, 19 and 14, where she will attend a convention. School bus speeds were looked into last night and the final decision was 35 mph for regular school activities, and 45 mph for extra-curricular activities. An egg contract with Yellis Dairy was approved by the board. The school farm will sell all their poultry produce to the dairy this year. Southern Regional Agriculture Teachers meeting will be held at AUHS Oct. 27. The board gave their approval and acceptance of expenses of Ralph Focht, principal of the evening high school at AUHS, on attending the State and National Adult Education convention in Los Angeles, Nov. 2, 3, 4, and 5.
