'Touring Dean' Calls Italy 'Land of Extremes' Italy is a "land of great extremes, the very ancient and the ultra-modern, undreamed of treasures of art and indescribable equal," reports Mrs. Ester Hatch, Fullerton junior college dean of women on leave of absence, in a letter to Dr. Lynn Sheller, director. Written from the French Riviera, the letter describes a seventeen-day tour of Italy by Mr. and Mrs. Hatch on a trip through Europe. They visited Milan, Venice, Florence, Naples, Rome and Genoa, crossing the Boot twice, and traveling down the middle and up the west side. "We thus had opportunity to get a pretty good view of both rural and urban life," Mrs. Hatch wrote. She commented on the poverty and misery in evidence in Naples, where the tourist cannot "set foot out of the hotel without being accosted by beggars or pursued by peddlers." The city, she said, nevertheless seemed to be a lively business and shipping center. In Venice, a unique city, Mrs. Hatch explained that there is no mode of transportation except by boat on the canals or by foot through a "labyrinth of narrow, unfragrant alleys." Viewing the art of Florence, "one vast treasury of art," she said she and Mr. Hatch decided that they must return home and study art history. "Never before," she declared, writing of Rome, "did I fully realize how advanced the Romans were politically and socially. It is Anaheim Gazette by JOHN S. NEUBAUER ... New Regulations In Pilots' Course Pilots flying in the coastal areas face special restrictions as a result of the current military situation, according to Leslie Songstad who will be instructor in an Air Regulations course recently added to the Fullerton evening junior college adult education program. "If they know these regulations and the proper procedures in Air Traffic Control, flying fans can continue to operate safely and legally under all conditions," Songstad stated. The class work in the course is planned to provide students with the knowledge required to obtain certificates as C.A.A. Airport Traffic Control Operators, U. S. Weather Bureau Observers, and U. S. PRESS—Fullerton's detective utenant, Herbert Curtis, was given a "dressing down" he isn't likely to forget for a long, long time. While Herb was taking the nine-year-old, self-appointed gang leader to juvenile hall, the kid pulled out a newspaper and indignantly demanded why his name wasn't mentioned in the account of his arrest. He was told that it was newspaper policy not to mention juvenile's names. Waldo Hunter's friend, Mr. R. C. Holles, acquired three more newspapers. WORLD SERIES—Every time the baseball classic rolls around, it reminds us of Herman (Eric) Lenz baseball playing days under the late Arthur L. Nunn at Fulerton. Eric was quite a pitcher on his day, but he had to take his turn playing the field. One bright day at LAJC, Eric was playing the field. He found a convenient spot under a shade tree, took off his cap and wiped his brow. Things weren't going good for the Hornets. Nunn spotted Eric and shouted: "Eric, put on your cap and look like a ball player." The incident was forgotten for a decade, but Verne Wilkinson, former mayor of Fullerton, spotted Lenz near Pasadena's Rose Bowl. What did he do? He bellowed, "Eric, put on your cap..."
