Anaheim Gazette by JOHN S. NEUBAUER When my heart is overwhelmed lead me to the rock that is higher than I—Psa. 61:2. CALIFORNIANA—John Brown, also known as "Juan Flaco" or "Long John," an American soldier, arrived in San Francisco Sept. 28, 1846, after having made the fastest horseback ride ever recorded between Los Angeles and the bay area. Brown carried a message to Com. Robert F. Stockton asking for aid for the besieged military forces. Brown left Los Angeles at 8 p.m. Sept. 24, reached Santa Barbara at 11 p.m. Sept. 25; Monterey on Sept. 27 and San Francisco at 8 p.m. Sept. 28. He made the 630 miles in four days. LINES-O-TYPE—Herman Schacht is wrong. He said the Gazetteer was a politician. That's a laugh when a guy works for a living... Incidentally Happy Herman was asked by Lee Kavanaugh why on Anaheim football team should lose by a 103-0 score. Was it because Herman was the water boy? Hmmm-m-m... Joe Martin is really doing his duty. He's a crossing guard at one of Anaheim's busiest intersections... Al Vall apparently had a rough time. He got his finger caught in a hammer. Zion Lutheran Rally Sunday will be held in Zion Lutheran church Sept. 30, with children of the Sunday school joining Rev. E. H. Pflug in presenting the sermon topic in the 11 a.m. worship. Topic will be "Why Go to Sunday School?" and Pastor Pflug's sermon will be interspersed with songs and recitations by the children. An impressive part of the service will be pledges made by parents, Sunday school teachers, members of the board of Christian education and the youngsters The parents will pledge dedication of their homes to Christ, teachers will promise to instruct diligently in the Word of God and the board members will pledge support of the entire congregation toward Christian education. The pupils will promise "to be about their Heavenly Father's business, as was Jesus." Superintendent of the Sunday school is Walter Knigge. Special music will be presented by the church choir, directed by Mrs. Walter Kempin. Christian Church Mrs. Leah Pemberton, voice teacher of Santa Ana, has been chosen to serve as the director of the Christian church choir. Mrs. Pemberton is president of the Musical Arts club of Orange county, the sponsoring organization of the opera presentations in this county, and is an associate of the American Operatic Academy of Hollywood. Which reminds us, that Fred (Dobbin) Vall of the Fluor Construction Corp., has an interesting hobby—designing better homes for better living. CONGRATULATIONS — Yorba Linda did it again! The suburban community which Ted Kuchel, Robert Rossberg, Oscar Gibbs and several other prominent Anaheimers call home won another prize at this year's Ellay Fair. Congratulations. They're well deserved—and they're earned. NEWSPAPERING — Now that the metro AM's are skyrocketing their prices to ten cents an issue, the Anaheim Gazette, more than ever before, becomes the West's BIGGEST newspaper bargain. The paper's founder, George Barton, pegged the Gazette's subscription at $5 a year in 1870. Ted Kuchel and his associate, Max Besler, haven't changed it even though costs have skyrocketed. QUICKIES — Howard Walton, the well known engineer, is an outstanding photographer. He is a camera artist if there ever was one. WATCH IT—Too many kids on bicycles are getting hurt! Such accidents can be avoided because they are caused by careslessness. In most instances, the youngster is at fault. Parents, please tell your children to exercise caution when they ride on highways and byways. NOTES—John McCoy, former Santa Ana newspaperman and educator, now with the Fluor Corp., wrote a book and it is being used by 1600 schools in the US and Canada. Success, even though teacher of Santa Ana, has been chosen to serve as the director of the Christian church choir. Mrs. Pemberton is president of the Musical Arts club of Orange county, the sponsoring organization of the opera presentations in this county, and is an associate of the American Operatic Academy of Hollywood. Warren Baker, who has served as choir director for the past four years, has found it necessary to resign the position since he is now a resident of Redondo Beach where he is employed. He will continue to serve as baritone soloist. Grace Lutheran A fitting climax will be brought to the Parish Education Emphasis in Grace Lutheran this Sunday. Pastor H. F. Stief will speak on the general theme of the month "Teach My People." His topic will be "Mandate for God's People." Both the 8:15 and 10:45 a.m. services will be designed to bring the worshipper to a realization of the responsibility of consecrated Christian instruction for both children and adults. SM Hidden far at the bottom of the Bulletin's article is the meat of the situation, which for some reason, the paper seemingly wished to obscure, but did not wish to omit altogether. The following is quoted from the article. "There are definite steps the veteran can take to have such a lease approved. He can take four original copies of the lease to the Long Beach office, 812 Hartwell Bldg., 19 Pine ave., and apply for state approval. After the legal department of this branch office has approved the lease, if it does, it is forwarded to Sacramento for final confirmation." It is puzzling, to say the least, why a supposedly reputable newspaper should go to such length, 12 inches of it, to be exact, to prove that: 1. It doesn't know what it is talking about; or 2. It has no regard for a newspaper's time-honored duty to present the facts as they are, unslanted and UNOBSCURED. Telephones (Continued from Page 1) courthouse, gave that answer the application of the Orange county Farm Bureau for extended one service, which would elimigate toll charges in the county. The question was taken under adsement by examiner Manley Edards, for the commission. Associated Telephone Co., with changes at Laguna Beach, Huntington Beach and Westminster, did the commission, in a statement from its attorneys, that the company neither favors nor opposited service. Officials of that company testified that in their union, it would not be satisfacry because of increased monthly rates required, and, because of conditions, could not be installed within three years. Witnesses for both companies Open the door then open your heart Who's there? It could be an abandoned child, an old woman, the sick of body knock at your door. Just one knocks—your Red Feather wteer. But he speaks for them Witnesses for both companies testified that full-dial conversion of all exchanges would be necessary for extended service. One witness said the Pacific could need 220 tons of copper and 144,000,000 million feet of cable for that company's part of the project. The government restricts these materials. Fullerton exchange dial conversion is planned next year, and Newport Beach Beacon exchange conversion will follow in 1953, he said. The company's service in Orange county then will be 80 per cent under dial, it was stated. The Pacific Telephone Co., indicated that its approval of extended service would involve "appropriate" rate increases. Attorneys for the Associated Indicators in their questioning of witnesses that monthly rates might up $5 to $6 per month, or more, the company had its way. Farm Bureau sources, however, indicate much smaller increases, possibly 50 cents per month for residential phones, more for business. Surches are urged to attend and gain this valuable information. Meetings are held each Monday evening beginning at 7:30 p.m. Who's there? It could be an abandoned child, an old woman, the sick of body, the sick of mind.
