Classroom Overload Comes with Record Enrollment
With the first hurry of class resumption over, enrollment officials have counted noses and come up with some interesting statistics.
A record crop of more than 30 million children is enrolled in U.S. schools this fall they report.
This amounts to one-fifth of our entire population, and means that most schools throughout the country are bursting at the seams, trying to accommodate this vast army of young scholars. Greatest influx is in the primary grades as the war babies of 1942-45 reach school age.
The present boom in school children can be expected to continue for at least the next 12 years, with reinforcements as a result of the new birth-rate upswing following the Korean war this year and last.
These lusty millions of small fry are providing assorted headaches to school boards and taxpayers. New school buildings are being voted and rushed into construction at virtually every crossroads; overflow pupils are being taught in makeshift quarters such as churches and community halls. School buses are having to stagger their loads, delivering some pupils in time to start school at
Goodwill Reports Increased Aid
Goodwill Industries of Orange county gave employment to 66 disabled war veterans and needy handicapped persons during the past month, as compared to 55 employees on the payroll for the same month a year ago. That report of growing service to the physically handicapped of the community was given at Monday's business session of the board of directors.
Executive Secretary George F. Angne reported that the first-aid room recently fitted up for the benefit of Goodwill employees is functioning. Dr. Kurt Schnitzer of Santa Ana, who contributes time each week for free service to Goodwill employees, has interviewed and examined 14 employees to date. He is planning to arrange for special treatment at the County hospital for spastics among the employees, Angne said.
Mrs. Nan Moore of Anaheim is among the 21 prominent county leaders who make up the Goodwill board of directors.

NOTICE OF SALE OF REAL ESTATE
These lusty millions of small fry arb providing assorted headaches to school boards and taxpayers. New school buildings are being voted and rushed into construction at virtually every crossroads overflow pupils are being taught in makeshift quarters such as churches and community halls. School buses are having to stagger their loads, delivering some pupils in time to start school at 8:30, others at 9:15, with corresponding dismissal hours in the afternoon.
The demand for competent teachers grows more urgent by the hour, and in most communities P-TA groups are taking a more active interest in school problems, with fathers as well as mothers showing up for meetings and working to raise badly needed funds.
Meanwhile the newest crop of young Americans struggle with the same old three R's in a brand new atmosphere.
Projects with kindergarten blocks are interrupted for atomic drills. Little boys work with Geiger counters and uranium in their chemistry sets, and little girls contemplate careers in politics.
They are a precocious group of pint-sized philosophers, on the average, having sat in on family discussions of new and unknown terrors.
They contemplate with interest the near possibility of rocket trips to the moon, speak the patols of science—comic book fiction with gibs case. They know the inner workings of crime and politics, because they have a ring-side seat at these modern spectacles right in front of their own television sets. They face what most thinkers agree is the most crucial period in world history.
