'All Through Paying Attention to Odd Little Mental Midget'—Benton WASHINGTON (AP) — Senator Benton (D-Conn) demanded today that Senator McCarthy (R-Wis) give a U.S. District Attorney "any evidence he has to support his charge that several members of Congress have known communists on their staffs." McCarthy retorted: "I am all through paying any attention to what that odd little mental midget, Benton, has to say. His complete lack of intelligence makes him too unimportant to waste time on." For the last 18 months McCarthy has been contending that communists and red sympathizers have worked their way into State Department jobs. McCarthy was quoted as saying at a news conference in Savannah, Ga., Wednesday night that "several United States representatives and Senators have known communists on their staffs." On his return to Washington McCarthy told a reporter: "I didn't say known communists. I said they have communists on their staffs." As he did at Savannah, McCarthy declined to name any of the lawmakers he declared are employing reds. Nor would he indicate whether he might do so later. "I have absolutely no further comment on that matter," he said. Benton has accused McCarthy of "character assassination" and has introduced a resolution which raises the question of whether McCarthy should be ousted from the Senate. A Senate rules subcommittee may get together today to decide whether to hold hearings on the resolution and to consider McCarthy's demand that he be permitted to question witnesses. Benton said McCarthy's charges in Savannah were "reckless accusations advanced without proof." He added: "They convince me that he is suffering from a malady which feeds on itself—fright. He is frightened that the end is in sight for him, and it is because of my resolution." Benton told a reporter "It constitutes a felony to pay a federal salary to any government employee who is known to be a communist." Then he said: "Under those circumstances, McCarthy should hand over to a U.S. district attorney any evidence he has to support his charge that several members of Congress have known communists on their staffs." "If he doesn't do so, he is derelict in his duty as a citizen and as a United States Senator." (P)—Senator Taft (R-Ohio) said today Truman administration farm subsidy proposals are a “fraud” to promise high prices to farmers and low prices to consumers. The Ohio Senator said in a speech prepared for a cooperative power plant dedication, here that farmers are entitled to support prices just as much as laborers are to minimum wages. But Taft assailed the Brannan farm subsidy payment plan which Congress has rejected, without directly naming it. The Brannan plan, named for the Secretary of Agriculture, called for subsidies to farmers to make up the difference between the amount they received for perishable commodities in the open market and a predetermined “farm price.” “I have always thought this subsidy business was a fraud,” Taft declared. “It enables an administration to promise a farmer high prices and a consumer low prices at the same time. “The idea is that the difference is charged to the taxpayers, but in the long run the consumer and the farmer pay most of the taxes and so they really do not get the benefits which are promised them. In fact, they get a bill for the benefits almost before they receive them.” FIRST with the BEST for the LEAST Orange DRIVE-IN Theatre CHILDREN FREE HIGHWAY 101 AT PLACENTIA * ML 3-8271 * ORANGE 389 SHOW STARTS AT DUSK Last Times Tonite “HIS KIND OF WOMAN” —and— If he doesn’t do so, he is derelict in his duty as a citizen and as a United States Senator.” Gross “co-operated” with prosecution until the legal were down in Kings county Tuesday and Wednesday.
