12 Anaheim Gazette THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 20, 1951 ANAHEIM, CALIFORNIA Anaheim Gazetteer by JOHN S. NEUBAUER Exhort one another daily, while it is called Today—Heb. 3:13. GUILTY — After deliberating five hours a jury of ten men and two women found Henry Ford McCracken, hulking 34-year-old tavern guitarist, guilty of slaying Patricia Jean Hull, 10-year-old Buena Park schoolgirl, last May. Judge Robert Gardner's courtroom was packed when Jury Foreman J. H. Covington returned the verdict. The defense immediate-ly made a motion for an insanity hearing. The conviction, however, does not end the lengthy case that stirred the public wrath. The insanity hearings may prove long and arduous. The wheels of justice grind ever so slowly and it is tragic to say the least that the innocent victim's parents must constantly be reminded of the bitter experience they had to endure. The Gazetteer sympathizes with these people and hopes that the public indignation aroused by the case will prompt legislation designed to eliminate the repetition of another such case. CALIFORNIANA — On Sept. 20, 1850 Congress appropriated $90,000 for the construction of California's first six lighthouses. A survey headed by George Davidson selected the lighthouse. SHE WON A PRIZE—Fern Vanatta, left, is presented a diploma and completely equipped Westinghouse vacuum cleaner by her employer, Lealie J. Simpson of South Seas Cafe, which she won when she gave the correct answer in White King Soap's doorbell ringing quiz. Miss Vanatta is governess in the Simpson home at 1008 E. South st. Every day, Monday through Friday, the quiz awards valuable Westinghouse appliances as prizes.—(Gazette photo by Kreidt) Gowns Elegant Short or Long The long and short view of Fall formals is equally glamorous, for imaginative gown designers have added an aura of stardust and moonglow around every one of their new Fall creations. Autumn evening wear is divided into two groups: the long, slim tube-like silhouette and the exact opposite: the short, billowy bouffant gown. The slim-line dinner dress is a perfect foil for the more mature woman who wants to look slim as can be. While the more petite lass can emphasize her demure proportions with a Dresden-like froth of "short" evening skirt. The severity of the new tube-like outline is softened by huge pouff bows at the shoulder, flowing "trumpet" flares at skirt bottom, oversized btterfly sleeves and fly-away panels over the skirt. In the shorter gowns, the bouffant is sometimes minimized by subtracting from the foam-like skirt and designing it in a heavier, "flatter" fabric such as dull satin, taffeta or ottoman. Fall fabrics for evening gowns are truly fabulous, with brocade, damask-types and metaallic-spiced materials most popular.
