Retired Teachers Picnic in Park
The annual September picnic of Orange County Division of California Retired Teachers association was held Thursday in Anaheim La Palma park. Of the 337 retired teachers in Orange county, only 58 were present. Eight new members were welcomed.
Paul Cook, superintendent of Anaheim City Schools, and his wife were invited guests. Leonard Sargent of the Santa Ana Register came to enjoy the picnic and to take some pictures.
L. L. Beeman, president of the county division, presided at the business meeting. Mrs. Belle Bardwell read the minutes of the last two sessions. Miss L. Ora Connell reported on the membership drive, and expressed regret that many retired teachers of the county had not joined the organization. Mrs. Dora Glines stated that the Pasadena Teachers Home was in need of sheets, pillow cases, towels and other such articles, and it was voted to send money to help purchase some of the needed materials.
Mr. Beeman traced the Teachers Retirement Plan from its beginning in 1913 up to the present time and explained that every added benefit was due in large measure to the untiring efforts of the Retired Teachers Association. He urged every retired teacher to join so that the good work could continue and so that the influence of Orange County Division might retain its present high standing in the State.
"The Case of the Talking Horse shoe" was vividly portrayed by television the other night on a program called "The Public Prosecutor." The drama cunningly revealed the necessary clues solving a murder and then the case was referred to a panel amateur sleuths, one or who turned out to be Frank Truill manager of McCoy Drug Store in Anaheim.
It was like coming face to face with an old friend and we would like to say that efficient store manager though Frank is perhaps he missed his calling. He was great on television and furthermore solved the crime. The program was sponsored by the American Vitamin Associates, makers of Thyavals and Orvita who handsomely wined and dined the contestants at the Coconut Grove of the Amassador Hotel after the program.

- WITH AUTOMATIC GAS WATER HEATING
Clean, sparkling dishes take lots of hot water whether you do them by hand or automatic dishwasher. But you never run short when you heat water with gas. For gas is three times faster than any other practical fuel. It not only keeps ahead of the demands of an automatic dishwasher, for example, but also an automatic clothes washer, a growing family and a houseful of guests.
Here's minimum size AUTOMATIC GAS WATER HEATER your family needs:

ALASKA FLIGHT
One never knows on what trek the intrepid Anaheim home-maker will go next. Mrs. Hal Balmier has recently returned from a three week sojourn to Alaska.
"Did you take the Alcan Highway?" I asked. "No, we flew," was the prompt reply.
The Balmers own a small private plane in which they take frequent jaunts about the country, and when a yen to see Alaska came, they went. They left on a Friday afternoon and after a leisurely sightseeing trip, were in Dawson City the following Tuesday. It was not as easy as it sounds, because the weather up there is mighty treacherous, a supply of gasoline is rather uncertain, and the Canadian authorities require that all planes follow the highway instead of the more usual "beam." This is to facilitate the business of finding the wreckage in case the plane is forced down!
Illness invaded a camping trip taken by Helen Brownfield and her family. While the thermometer hovered around 107 degrees in the wilds of Colorado, one of the youngsters developed a temperature of 104. A doctor was located with some difficulty and administered the necessary shot of penicillin. His charge for the visit was a dollar per mile and he had traveled 31 miles.
Well, that experience is behind her now, and Helen is deep in parent-teacher work as president of Katella Parent-Teacher League. Two very active little boys keep her busy too, and she likes to keep the cookie jar full of them. Her oatmeal cookies are a favorite and call for ingredients that most home-makers always have on hand.
HELEN'S OATMEAL COOKIES
½ cup sifted flour.
2 teaspoons baking powder
¼ teaspoon salt
1½ cup rolled oats
½ cup brown sugar
½ cup salad oil
1 egg, well beaten
1½ teaspoon vanilla
5 teaspoons milk
Sift together the first three ingredients. Combine the oats and sugar and stir in shortening and egg. Add the flour mixture alternately with the milk and vanilla which have been combined. Drop by teaspoons on a greased cookie sheet and be sure to leave a two inch space between them.
