STOP—going either direction! That is a new California law regarding school buses. Effective Sept.
22, all school buses in this state must be equipped with flashing red lights—indicated by arrows
in this picture—on both front and rear. When a school bus is stopped and its red lights are flashing,
motorists driving in either direction must stop and wait. This safety warning comes from Leo Gogerty
of Gogerty-Mercury in Anaheim who says all Lincoln-Mercury dealers are co-operating with
the Police Department and the National Safety Council in "Operation Safety" during this back-toschool month.

Anaheim Gets Civil Defense Assignments
Anaheim has had its job cut out for it in the major campaign now under way to prepare for a possible A-bomb attack in this area.
An assignment of missions has been received here from Ernest S. Dixon, regional coordinator for the State Office of Civil Defense, and now in the process of being organized by Keith Murdoch, local coordinator of Civil Defense.
To take care of its own defense problems and also to provide mobile support for areas unable to provide for themselves Anaheim is being called upon to recruit and train 210 auxiliary firemen, 119 auxiliary policemen, one rescue squad and five radiological teams. It is being asked to organize and assign three mass care center teams, one mobile welfare team, two mobile shelter teams, two mobile feeding teams, one mobile clothing team and nine registration teams.
Anaheim's medical and health services assignment is the establishment of one first aid station, the staffing of Community hospital, and the naming of all but eight of its doctors to an unassigned pool.
This county also is charged with the task of providing shelter for 3000 persons, food for 4500, clothing for 1000, registration for 9000, and emergency aid and services for 3000.
"The requirements of personnel and facilities to combat the effects of an atomic strike in Region 9 (Los Angeles and Orange counties) will be beyond the capabilities of any single political jurisdiction." Dixon declared in transmitting the assignments.
"Each jurisdiction must, there-fore accept the responsibility of furnishing support to a strike area so as to assure essential military production for our armed services."
Murdoch said Anaheim will comply with the assignment to the best of its ability and revealed that the city has already taken steps to organize the fire and police reserves and the medical sections.
The first 50 nights of racing at Roosevelt Raceway showed that 42.4 per cent of the favorites chalked up victories.

Phyllis Landweer has enrolled in Fullerton J.C. and starts classes Sept. 10. Lots of others are doing the same thing but here is why Phyllis name is news. She is an Anaheim home-maker, mother of four grammar school age children, and has decided to continue her education. Her schedule has worked out so that she will be home when her children are. She is so petit and pretty that we wager the other students will never suspect she is the mother of four. Good luck to you, Phyllis.
Those who have some to know Frahees Liles well In the many years she has been Home Advisor for the Extension Service will be sorry to hear that she has sold her home in Santa Ana and moved up north. Frances was stricken with polio as a young girl and a bad leg gave her many painful times. She never married but devoted a full and bury life to helping others. Since her retirement from the Extension Service several years ago, her days have been devoted to her many philanthropic activities. She plans now to make her home with a cater who needs her care. Frances will be sorely missed in Orange county.
I was pleased as punch to have a visit from Mary Storm the other day. She is an interested reader who enjoys food and anything pertaining to it and we find a wonderful visit.
Mary, another vivacious mother of four youngsters, is a nurse and until recently when she had to undergo surgery, was working at the Orange county hospital as anesthetist. Right now, her mother and sisters are visiting her and 10 folks gather around the dinner table every night. Using imagination and a practiced handy Mary managed to get a second meal from a hot roast last week. She cut the meat into cubes and combined it with maproni. With the gravy diluted with fresh tomatoes, I can of corn and onion and green pepper for seasoning, it became a role which was greeted with enthusiasm. Mary's family has asked for a repeat performance. Mrs. N. E. Paussel of 500 N. Glentpine, we are delighted to hear, reads this column faithfully and when we mention that her sister Vera Ostra was vacationing in St. Cloud Minn. Mrs. Paussel sent the cliping on to her today a receive a new letter from Verna, unknowing that her many friends in Anaheim will be interested

hear from her, I quote the letter in part.
"I have thought of my good friends in dear old California so often since I left and miss every one of them. I have had a most interesting summer in spite of the sad mission that originally brought me here. We lost our dear mother in May and while I had five wonderful weeks with her before her passing, it was nevertheless a shock. Since then, having been made executrix of the estate, I have had plenty to do, but have also found time to do some wonderful fishing. I was born and raised here, but I have re-discovered Minnesota. I have taken many trips throughout the north country and unless one has been here it is really hard to describe the beauty of the state without seeming to exaggerate.
"It is truly wonderful. Lakes simply everywhere. Beautiful clumps of white birch and pines line the highways and streams and green pastures everywhere. But in spite of all this and the rain too, I shall be happy to get back to my little grey home on Walnut street. I am a confirmed Californian now and even though my travels take me far and wide, find there is no place like it.
My son Gene who is a captain in the Marines is stationed at Cherry Point, North Carolina, and thinks he might be sent to the Mediterranean this winter. How I envy him. He is certainly looking forward to it. I received a picture from the Navy showing the captain receiving his second Distinguished Flying Cross from Prig Gen. L. H. M. Sanderson in recent ceremonies at Marine Corps station there in Cherry Point. It was such a grand surprise to get the letter and his picture. He was also presented a letter of Commendation from Vice Admiral C. T. Joy for his action in the Korean war theater. I hope to see him before I leave for California."
With an eye on the approaching winter, which we understand is winter with a capital W in Minnesota, Vera hopes to be back in Anaheim by November 1.
