Anaheim Gazette THURSDAY, AUGUST 30, 1951 ANAHEIM, CALIFORNIA. Social and Club Activities Pat Terrebonne — 2206 More Students At Fullerton Indications are that the enrollment at Fullerton Junior college this fall will be at least 1000, exceeding that of last spring by about 200 students, announced Lynn Sheller, director of the college, today. Applications for admission have been coming in at a rapid rate during the last several weeks, he said, and students have been appearing at the college in a steady stream for pre-registration counseling and program planning. The college offers two types of courses, said the director, those intended for transfer to a four-year college or university and those designed to provide general educational development and vocational preparation on a two-year basis. Both types are open to older adults as well as to regular college-age people, and anyone may take work on either a part-time or full-time basis. Tuesday, Sept. 4, will be Freshman Day at the college, with an orientation assembly for all at 11 a.m., in the school auditorium, corner of Chanman and Harvard. Parents Tell Betrothal News At Dinner Party: A dinner party in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Oscar A. Meyer, 7692 Lincoln ave. brought forth news of the engagement of Miss Barbara Meyer to James R. Handsel of Buena Park. Plans have been made for a late fall wedding. The bridegroom-elect, son of Mr. and Mrs. Otto Handsel of Morgan, Colo., is a graduate of Colorado schools. Miss Meyer is a graduate of Anaheim high school and Fullerton Junior college and was graduated from the University of Denver in Colorado. Dinner guests were Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth McCoy, Mr. and Mrs. Allan Marks, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Morris and daughter, Cheryl, Mr. and Mrs. Cecil Ladd and daughter, Valerie, Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Schwartz, Allan Meyer and the two honorees. day at the times assigned them on their notices of acceptance. Students who have not yet applied for admission, and hence have not been assigned a time for registration for conferences with the college counselors may be secured by prospective and returning students by telephoning the college office. Counselors on duty include the head counselor, Royal C. Marten, Maurice Gerard, dean of men, and Agness Todd Santa Ana College Registration Now Mid-vacation registration for fall semester classes has begun at Santa Ana college, according to Dr. Daniel C. McNaughton, director. Students are being afforded an opportunity for individual interviews with a counselor and may complete all details of registration in advance of the beginning of school, Sept. 10. Appointments for conferences with the college counselors may be secured by prospective and returning students by telephoning the college office. Counselors on duty include the head counselor, Royal C. Marten, Maurice Gerard, dean of men, and Agness Todd those designed to provide general educational development and vocational preparation on a two-year basis. Both types are open to older adults as well as to regular college-age people, and anyone may take work on either a part-time or full-time basis. Tuesday, Sept. 4, will be Freshman Day at the college, with an orientation assembly for all at 11 a.m., in the school auditorium, corner of Chapman and Harvard avenues, and meetings with counselors from 1:15 to 2:15 in the afternoon. Registration for sophomores and all other students who have previously attended college will be held on Wednesday, the fifth, from 7:30 to 12 and 1 to 4, and for freshmen on Thursday and Friday. Eat More California Oranges Home-Makers' Forum By JOAN B. WHITE Gazette Home Economist As I write this, a gentle rain is falling outside my kitchen window. The sound of it is pleasantly intensified by the steady drip, drip, drip of a nearby walnut tree. The weather outside is gloomy and damp but inside is as cozy as can be. Company is nice on a day like this, so I have put on the coffee pot and invited my neighbor over for a second breakfast. Whenever there is a chill in the air, I have the urge to make a big pot of soup. It warms the innards at lunch time and provides dinner with a very fine start. Ground meat and vegetable soup is a favorite at our house. It can be made of most any ground meat—hamburger, ground heart or even ground liver will do—and the refrigerator is sure to yield a combination of vegetables that will make it vitamin-rich and tasty. GROUND MEAT AND VEGETABLE SOUP 2 tablespoons cooking fat 1 clove garlic, minced 1 large onion, chopped 2 cornmeal ROLLED OATMEAL COOKIES 1 cup shortening 1 cup brown sugar 3 cups finely cut oatmeal 2 cups flour (enriched or whole wheat) ½ teaspoon soda 2 teaspoons baking powder 1 teaspoon salt Scant ¼ cup water ½ teaspoon vanilla Combine ingredients in order given and roll into a thin layer. Cut into rectangles, diamonds and squares. Bake at 350 degrees for about 8 minutes. Makes about 8 dozen small cookies. A batch of rich, creamy chocolate fudge is sure to hold the attention of youngsters and grown-ups alike and is just the thing to occupy a rainy day. The ingredients in the following recipe do not differ materially from hunterviews with a counselor and may complete all details of registration in advance of the beginning of school, Sept. 10. Appointments for conferences with the college counselors may be secured by prospective and returning students by telephoning the college office. Counselors on duty include the head counselor, Royal C. Marten, Maurice Gerard, dean of men, and Agness Todd Miller, dean of women. Early enrollments indicate an increasing interest in pre-nursing and secretarial training, Genevieve Humiston, registrar, stated. Class offerings include a wide variety of courses, permitting a complete paralleling of the first two years of university work, as well as occupational training for business, the mechanical arts, journalism, merchandising and draftsmanship. Some 400 Orange county students availed themselves of this pre-school counseling during the August registration period last year, Dr. McNaughton revealed. "Some students have completed their enrollment for this September during the past week and are now on vacation trips, with all details completed except for picking up class cards and meeting classes Sept. 10," he concluded. Topperettes Plan Special Meeting With Peggy Hoag and Thelma Woods assisting, Hazel Bunnell entertained the Topperettes club this week. Next meeting will be with Margie Long and co-hostesses are Maxine Carlson and Vangie Schumacher. Attending were Reda McCaughnahy, Charlene Jaggers, Rosemary Zuver, Vangie Schumacher and Maxine Kirkhart. A special meeting was planned for September 15 at 8 p.m., at the Sky Room in Long Beach. Riverside Fair To Open Sept. 5 Agricultural, horticultural and feature exhibits plus entertainment features surpassing previous years will be ready for the public when the Farmers Fair of Riverside county opens Wednesday. GROUND MEAT AND VEGETABLE SOUP 2 tablespoons cooking fat 1 clove garlic, minced 1 large onion, chopped 2 carrots, diced 2 stalks celery, chopped 1 medium potato, diced Combine in a covered utensil and saute the vegetables until they are nearly tender but not browned. This will take about 10 minutes. Add to these the following: 2 quarts of soup stock or vegetable water 3 tablespoons ground meat that has been browned 2 teaspoons salt ½ teaspoon pepper Other seasonings (bay leaf, thyme, marjoram) 1 pound finely ground meat Simmer for about 15 minutes and serve immediately. WHAT SHALL WE DO These last few days before school starts tend to present an empty stretch to little folks who have run out of things to do. Thinking back to Christmas vacation when we were all indoors with colds, I remembered what fun we had baking cookies. Anaheim Can Boast Largest Volume Used Car Lot in All Orange County Mrs. Nellie Miller of 8251 Second st., has returned from a months' stay at Porl Lavaca, Tex. The oil pipeline traversing Saudi Arabia is 1,068 miles long. Anaheim now boasts the largest volume used car lot in Orange county, thanks to the Robert H. Boney Dodge-Plymouth agency at 328 W. Center st., Anaheim. Directly across Center st., at 333 W. Center, Boney's lot was recently increased in space by the removal of a service station on the corner of Center and Helena sts. This latest addition marks only one of the many advances made by the Boney organization since the first entered the automotive field here 33 years ago. Mr. Boney is, as most Anaheimers know, one of the councilmen who are currently guiding the destiny of the city. Almost simultaneously with the increase of facilities with which to serve his customers, Mr. Boney added two new employees to his staff, representing a total of 28 years of automotive experience.
