(Patent No. The Bell Brands Inc.) 3-24-51 Anaheim Gazette MONDAY, AUGUST 27, 1951 ANAHEIM, CALIFORNIA Edison Company Joins in Observance of National Electrification Week The Southern California Edison company this week joined with the electric industry throughout the country in observance of National Farm Electrification Week, marking the progress that has been made in the electrification of the nation's rural areas. In California, 98 per cent of the state's 139,000 farms are using electricity, making California one of the most highly electrified farming states in the nation. Nationally, 95 per cent of the farms are receiving electric service. The greatest benefit electric service has brought to California farms has been to provide a year round supply of water for irrigation, despite the dry months each year. This has been largely responsible for the substantially higher income of California farms as compared with the national average. To further farm electrification within the 10 central and Southern California counties in its service territory, the Edison company built more than 1673 miles of power lines in rural areas between 1945 and 1950, making a total of approximately 11,387 miles of Edison-built rural electric service lines in operation today. In 1950 the Edison company supplied farms with 873,999,363 kilowatt-hours of electricity to help produce and process their crops. Farm electrification is of prime importance in Southern California and has been one of the major factors in the Southland's development and growth. Water more than 90 per cent of all irrigation here is provided by electric pumps, and as the economic foundation of the state based upon farming, farm electrification has benefited all dents. Mutual Water Co. Not Exempt From Insurance Taxes Employers who operate m water companies are not exempt from California unemployment surance taxes, R. C. Hlatt, an in charge, Santa Ana Audit trict office, Department of employment, said today. Some mutual water company Hlatt said, have overlooked fact that most of the exemption formerly provided by law is longer in effect. Since Jan. 1, such an employer who pays $100 in wages during a cal quarter is subject to the p tax. The fact that water is plied to farmers for agricultural purposes does not exempt wages paid by the water company. In order to prevent unnecessary penalties, Hlatt urged that such employer not registered the Department of Employ should communicate with Hlatt at 1104 W. Eighth st., Ana.
