CALIFORNIANA—In 1847 Lt.-Col. John C. Fremont was placed under arrest at Ft. Leavenmorth by Gen. Stephen W. Kearney to face charges of insubordination. He was court-martialed, found guilty and sentenced to dismissal from the army. The sentence was never imposed, but Fremont resigned and continued to champion the West.
Research Rocket Explodes Under Carrier Plane
EDWARDS, Calif. (AP) — A shell research rocket plane exploded and caught fire yesterday just as it was about to be released by a R-50 plane at 10,000 feet over Edwards Air Force base. There were no casualties.
Lt. Col. Frank K. Everets, pilot of the research plane, managed to climb to safety in the R-50 just before the rocket ship was jettisoned. The plane, the X1-D, is the latest refinement of a craft that first broke the sole barrier in 1947.
VIGNETTE—Somebody, I don't know who, sent us the following note on Statler Hotel stationery from Bawston: "Dear John: Here in the 'Hub of Civilization' you will notice they are not crude and vulgar as we are in the West. No 'pants burglar here... Too close to Hahvahd, I presume.' A clipping was enclosed:
SURPRISE FOR NIGHT ROBBER
"Bondoir Bandit" Gets Knuckles Rapped
Brighton's "boudoir bandit" who has been raiding bedrooms while his victims slept, had a narrow escape from death Saturday night.
The thief was surprised while climbing into the second floor window at the home of Alfred Gorsum. 33.
Gorsum told police that he saw the robber's hands on the window still just as he entered the darkened bedroom to retire. He tiptoed back to the kitchen, seized a carving knife and returned just as the intruder was trying to lift him self into the room.
Gorsum said he debated stabbing the man as he feared he might kill him; so he reversed the knife and beat him on the knuckles of both hands. The would-be thief released his grip, dropped down and fled.
The "pants burglar" isn't a local product entirely. There are sneak thieves operating in various localities of the country having the same modus operandi as Orange county's own.
Fisherman's Body Recovered Offshore
The body of Richard Hallan (Red) Brown, 33, Huntington Beach fisherman who was drowned July 20 when a skiff capsized four miles off-shore there, has been found in the water a mile off the Balloon pier.
Fishermen aboard the boat, "Georgia," out of Newport Beach, came upon the body. Brown had been a deckhand on the fishing boat "Super Express" out of Huntington Beach and drowned when he left the boat in a light skiff to recover a barracuda which had been lashed to the side of the boat and had fallen off. A wave capsize the skiff.
Brush Fire Does Little Damage
A brush fire on Santa Ana st. between Citron and Palm was eighteen by Arthur Provincio and some friends as they were driving back from a gas station yesterday afternoon.
They phoned in an alarm and the fire department quickly extinguished the blaze. No damage was done. Chief Ed Stringer stated that the fire was probably started by a motorist who flipped a cigarette out of a passing car.
MORE THAN MEETS THE EYE
The pallet, one of the many important parts in the works of your wrist watch, is but a tiny fraction of an inch long. You would have to multiply its weight two thousand times, according to the Jewelry Industry Council, before it would equal the approximate weight of your door key. Yet, as small as it is, this part requires standing the man as he handed him might kill him; so he reversed the knife and beat him on the knuckles of both hands. The would-be thief released his grip, dropped down and fled.
WARNING — Anaheim Police Chief Mark Stephenson has repeatedly warned Anaheimers to keep their doors locked. The local "pants burglar" isn't mechanically inclined. If he tries a door, finds it locked, he won't bother to break in.
PEOPLE—Alpha Salveson, the Orangesthorpe school teacher, learned a lesson, namely, tuke it easy when driving through Fulerton. Heavenly Helen Weir is lending her loveliness to the Santa Ana Realty Board's publicity. Jim Talcott, one of Orange county's most progressive dirt salesmen, could learn a lesson from Carl Hoek. Harry Basse, the Anaheim orange grower, is one of the second McCracken trial jurors. Incidentally, Frank Respair, the Placentia publisher was excused, because, like most news-papermen weighing the evidence, he has a pre-conceived idea of what went on. He's one of the shrewdest observers of the human scene in Orange county.
