He sailed up the Gulf of California and reached the mouth of the Colorado River on August 17 or 18. On the 26th Alarcon rowed up the river in small boats. At the junction of the Gila he disembarked on the west shore of the river—thus he was the first white man to set foot on soil of the present State of California.
