Church of Christ Blasts into First Church of Christ blasted their way into first place last night by clubbing White Temple 8 to 2, in the first game and then scoring 7 runs in two innings of the forfeited game with Zion Lutheran. Church of Christ scored in the bottom of the first inning against White Temple on a single by Ken Meadows, his first of four for the night, and a double by Ed Baker. White Temple tied the score in the top of the second on singles by Bob Hickok and Dennis Ryan. From here on it was all Church of Christ although White Temple scored one more run in the fifth, on singles by Roger Harlow, Hickok and Duane Duncan. In the third, Church of Christ scored four runs on a double by Meadows, two errors, singles by Lloyd Lichtenwalter and Don Schilling. In the fourth, they added three more runs on singles by Meadows, Don Dickenson, Al Mills and another double by Ed Baker. Church of Christ was leading Zion Lutheran 3 to 0 going into the top of the fifth inning and in the fifth, they scored two runs on a walk and two errors. In the sixth, they added five runs on a walk, single by Don Dickenson, an error, single by Mills, and doubles by Lichtenwalter and Gerald Baker and an error by the center-fielder that went for four bases. Church Players Get Evaluation Sheet: Don Leibhart and Don Derr have addressed a letter to all Church league players asking their cooperation in filling out an evaluation sheet. Their letter is as follows: "For several years the same problems have confronted us in the Church league. Manager's meetings and agreements have not solved all of the problems. We feel that in order to solve most of the problems the following questions should be filled out by each individual player and returned to the Recreation Office either by mail or in person. It is not necessary to designate which team you played for nor is it necessary to sign your name to the evaluation. "Remember, while you are filling out the questions and giving your suggestions, that this sheet has been compiled with your interest in mind and in a spirit of cooperation in an effort to make your league enjoyable as a recreational activity. "A close count of Evaluation Sheets issued will be kept and those not returned will be considered votes from persons who are completely satisfied with the leagues operation during the past year." Evaluation Questions: 1. What is your opinion of the Church league this year? 2. Should the time limit on games be continued? (a) If no: What is your solution to the game time problem? (b) What is your opinion of the fees charged this year? (c) Do you feel that the City Recreation department should pay for... "It was good to know I was worth $100 a game to the St. Louis Browns, and losing a chance at this kind of dough makes me feel down," said the 43-inch mite. "But then again, I am happy—I've got a clipping of a box score that shows: 'Gaedel—walked for Saucier in lst.' Confident Murphy Predicts Knock-out NEW YORK (AP) — Confident Bob Murphy predicts he will knock out light heavyweight king Joe Maxim and become the new champion tonight. "I'm going to knock him out within seven rounds. And with a left hook to the body," said the husky hard-hitting San Diego Feller Reaching For Third Goal Bobby Feller has reached the second of three goals set before the start of the 1951 season. The 32-year-old rightander of the Cleveland Indians set 20 victories, a world series triumph and a no-hitter as his prime targets for the season. He got his no-hitter against Detroit on July 1. Feller realized his second ambition last night as he became the major's first 20-game winner, and the way the Indians are traveling these days he stands a good chance of attaining the other. The no-hit master pitched the Indians to a 6-0 triumph over the Washington Senators and preserved Cleveland's one game edge over the runner-up New York Yankees. The Yanks hammered the Detroit Tigers, 11-4, while the St. Louis Browns upset the third place Boston Red Sox, 6-4, and the Chicago White Sox defated the Philadelphia Athletics, 13-5, in other American league games. Meanwhile, in the National league, the New York Giants stretched their winning streak to ten games, beating the Cincinnati Reds, 7-4. Confident Murphy Predicts Knock-out NEW YORK (AP) — Confident Bob Murphy predicts he will knock out light heavyweight king Joe Maxim and become the new champion tonight. "I'm going to knock him out within seven rounds. And with a left hook to the body," said the husky, hard-hitting San Diego redhead as he awaited the startling gong (7 p.m., PDT) for the 15-round title scrap in Madison Square Garden. The bout will be broadcast and telecast by CBS. "I'll win—I've got to win," Maxim said. The tall, swarthy champion is defending his crown for the first time since he lifted it from Freddie Mills with a 10-round kayo in London 19 months ago. The bettors lean strongly to Murphy, zooming him from a 2-1 underdog to a 5 to 8½ choice. By fight time, the California southpaw may be favored by 1 to 2. Maxim's lacklustre workouts are the reason for the switch in odds. In his recent drills, Maxim looked slow afoot. He'll need shifty feet to elude the bull-like rushes of the southpaw socker. Maxim is the key to the fight. Everyone knows what Murphy can do. The ex-sailor bores in with a relentless attack. He has a zest for fighting and a knockout wallop in his left hand. He's easy to hit and is willing to take a couple of punches to get in one left hook or uppercut. His right hand is feeble. The big question is how good is Maxim. If he's close to the fighter who stopped Mills or 75 per cent as good, he should be able to handle Murphy as easily as Harry (Kid) Matthews did last March. The old Maxim would keep Murphy off balance and punish him with left jabs, left hooks and snappy right crosses. And get away, or tie up his opponent's payoff left. We'll string along with Murphy. A long period of idleness and his terrific shellacking from Ezzard Charles appear to have taken something out of the champion. Murphy has stopped 55 of his 65 foes. Lost five bouts, and been stopped twice by outs. He hasn't Detroit Tigers, 11-4, while the St. Louis Browns upset the third place Boston Red Sox, 6-4, and the Chicago White Sox deftacted the Philadelphia Athletics, 13-5, in other American League games. Meanwhile, in the National league, the New York Giants stretched their winning streak to ten games, beating the Cincinnati Reds, 7-4. The Philadelphia Phils nipped the Chicago Cubs, 3-2, in 12 innings in completing a suspended game of July 22 and then downed the Cubs, 4-1, in the regular scheduled night game. The Boston Braves clipped the Pittsburgh Pirates, 3-1. Rain washed out a game between St. Louis and Brooklyn in the third inning. Feller allowed only six singles and was in command throughout. It was Feller's first 20 victory season since 1947 and his sixth in 13 seasons—a feat matched by only five other American league pitchers, Cy Young, Walt Johnson, Lefty Grove, Wes Ferrell and Eddie Plank. The Indians provided Feller with a 5-0 lead at the end of three innings. Harry Simpson drove home the first run and Ray Boone and Al Rosen knocked in the next four. Larry Doby ended the scoring with his 19th homer in the seventh. The loss was Washington's tenth straight. Yogi Berra, Gene Woodling and Johnny Mize led the Yanks' 17-hit attack against the Tigers at Detroit. Berra poled his third homer in as many games to open the Yank scoring. Woodling drove home four runs on as many hits and Mizu featured a five-run fourth inning with a two-run homer. Little Art Schallock scattered seven Tiger hits in going the distance for the first time. A LONG PERIOD OF IDLENESS AND HIS terrific shellacking FROM EZZARD CHARLES APPEAR TO HAVE TAKEN SOMETHING OUT OF THE CHAMPION. MURPHY has stopped 55 of his 65 foes. Lost five bouts, and been stopped twice by cuts: He hasn't met the calibre of Maxim's foes, however. The champion, in compiling a 75-17 record, has fought the toughest of them all, including Jersey Joe Walcott, Charles and other top heavies. Maxim has been kayoed only once. Because of the network telecast, the bout figures to draw only about 10,000 fans at $3 to $15. The gross gate probably will hit around $50,000. But the battlers will cut in on a $100,000 melon for radio-T.V. rights. Maxim will receive 40 per cent of the net gate and the air money. Murphy will get 20 per cent. DI MAGGIO PERENNIAL BASEBALL ALL-STAR NEW YORK (UP)—Joe DiMaggio holds a perfect record of nomination to American League all-star teams since he entered the loop in 1936. When Casey Stengel named Joe to the 1951 squad it made the 13th time. He was in service when the 1943 and 1944 teams were picked and there was no game in 1945 due to war travel restrictions. The Yankee Clipper was picked in 1946 but was sidelined with a knee injury. ROARING RAINBOWS START Tournament The Roaring Rainbows travel to Fullerton today to play the first game at 1:00 against Cypress. Cypress and Anaheim split-in the league. If they win they play at Huntington Beach at 3:00. If they lose they play on Thursday. Also their first game in the Bellflower tournament was announced as next Monday, Aug. 27 at 12:00 against the Garvey Tigers. Santa Ana Pitcher Signed with Stars HOLLYWOOD UP—Santa Ana high school's outstanding pitcher, Bert Haysom, has signed a 1952 contract with Hollywood Stars. Haysom will join the Twinks Thursday and hurl batting practice for the remainder of the season, the club announced yesterday. With a 10-1 win record for his high school this year, the young hurler was credited with two consecutive no-hitters.
