BACKGROUND—Anaheim's recent industrial growth gives clear indication of the things to come. Eventually Anaheim will be the center of Orange county's rich industrial empire, just as Northern Orange county's agricultural development can be traced to the pioneer colony. The Colonists in establishing their homes here did more than that—they established a center of civilization around which much of Orange county was built. Historical documents state that Anaheim was a veritable oasis in a lush mustard field. BEAVER FOR ELIZABETH WINNIPEG (UP) — The ancient and lawful tribute paid to reigning monarchs and heirs to the British throne by the Hudson Bay Co. will likely be claimed by Princess Elizabeth when she passes through Winnipeg on her Canadian tour. Under the terms of the Hudson's Bay charter, granted by King Charles II in 1670, it was ordained that the company pay as tribute to his heirs and successors two black beaver skins and two elk heads. $55,500 in Permits Issued in 3 Days Anaheim Building department took off to a good start this week, permit-wise, with $55,500 worth of building permits issued since noon Friday. Historical documents state that Anaheim was a veritable oasis in a lush mustard field. As Anaheim grew, its environs developed. Farms and fields sprang up and prospered outside of the colony. The irrigation system was improved and expanded. But Anaheim remained the business section of Orange county until Santa Ana developed into a secondary business center. GROWTH—Santa Ana developed more rapidly because of the difference in the people developing the central Orange county area. Anaheimers were contented to enjoy the fruits of their labors and while they were staunch pioneers, hard workers, they weren't willing to take unnecessary risks. Anaheim remained culturally German, though the pioneers hued it from the earth. It's characteristic was typically American with its homes and business buildings built from adobe. Business records were kept in German script until 1877 when English replaced German as the language. TRANSITION—In 1888 Anaheim underwent a change very much like the transition that is taking place today. The nematodes that killed the grape culture may have done the community a favor by changing its cultural and agricultural aspects. Anaheimers of that day moaned over their ill fortune, but they never despaired. They took it in stride. Perhaps it was their plight that made Orange county the world's greatest orange producing center. INDUSTRIES—In the last decade or two with the development of the citrus bi-product markets, Anaheim has become industrially minded. Industrial payrolls have been responsible for the development of fine residential areas as well as factories. Anaheim is in the center of a rich labor market. Those living in and around the city are skilled and adept to modern industrial development. Anaheimers have the know-how. They can build, run and maintain the most complicated machinery. Being centrally located, those who man the machines may live in or near these industrial developments. Anaheim's workers have the world's best playgrounds at their back yard. There are the mountains, beaches and desert within an hour's driving time. POSTSCRIPT — Anaheim's colorful past and abundant present indicates a brilliant future.
