Local American Legion Team in 5-4 Victory Over Lumberman's Post Grace Lutheran Beat Stars 2 to 0 Art Altheide pitched Grace Lutheran to a 2 to 0 win over the Magnolia Stars last night at the City park. Altheide struck out 11 batters and gave up four scattered hits as the Stars never threatened. Grace Lutheran scored one run in the first, but should have scored more as the first man up. Art Michel singled, then got trapped off of second, Del Martens singled, followed by an error in the outfield to put the first four batters on base, then Hein popped to the first baseman and Paul Altheide struck out. In the fifth, they scored one more run on a double by Michel and a single by Martens. Del Martens led the nine hit attack with three singles in four trips. "Jinxes aren't going to help anybody in there Wednesday," said Maxim, who defends his crown against Irish Bobby Murphy in Madison Square Garden tomorrow night. "I'm more concerned about some of that rough stuff he likes to pull." “If he pulls any dirty stuff on me, I'll give him some of it right back.” Joey started to smoulder just discussing the matter. A pro close to 12 years, he knows all the tricks. “This is all or nothing with me. I'm on the spot and I’ll give it right back to him. Thumbs, if necessary. I don’t ever start that kind of stuff but I’ll protect myself.” Joey’s manager Jack (Doc) Kearns was more specific: “I don't want to bring up low punches, but Murphy hits a few low ones. Let's have a fight instead of a wrestling match. If Murphy fights according to the rules, Maxim will beat him easy. He'll beat him anyway.” Murphy, a fighter who bores in from the start and keeps throwing punches without a letup, was burned up at the charges. Coast League Teams Take up Tonight— (By The Associated Press) Pacific Coast league teams take up tonight where they left off Sunday. Seattle's pacemakers, still seven games to the good in first place with only 22 to play, throw Marv Grissom with an 18 and 9 record against Los Angeles' Bob Spicer, who has won 15 and lost 11. Without saying so directly, Manager Rogers Hornsby of the Raiiers leaves the impression he considers his team "in for the pennant." He points out that Seattle hasn't had a slump, that its longest losing streak was three games, and that a form reversal isn't likely now. As to the Seattle-Hollywood five-game series that follows the Los Angeles series, Hornsby says he doesn't particularly fear the runner-up Stars, "and if we lose them all we'll still be in first place." Ayers, who has won 19 and lost 12, will be striving to become the league's first 20-game winner this season. Dodgers May Have Won Pennant BROOKLYN (AP)—The Brooklyn Dodgers may have won the 1951 National League pennant—if they do not blow it—by beating the New York Giants in Ebbets field. The Dodgers are far from clinching the flag—after losing 5½ games of a 13½ game lead within a week. But they still have an eight-game spread and seven games of that margin were piled up by shellacking the Giants at Ebbets field. Most of the Giants' trouble in Brooklyn can be traced to two days—July 4 and Aug. 8. On each the New Yorkers dropped doubleheaders to the Dodgers an followed the next day by folding up gracefully in the third game of each series. They're supposed to penalize you for holding with both hands. "They're just getting up an alibi," said Murphy. "I'm going to knock him out with a left hook to the body within seven rounds." Murphy has looked real sharp in his workouts while Maxim hasn't been any ball of fire. As a result, the odds have surged. Veteran Gets Golf Victory He's After SIOUX CITY, Ia. (AP)—Buck White, a 38-year-old veteran of professional golf's brideade, has that victory he has been after since 1946. Five years ago the curly-headed pro from Greenwood, Miss., won the Memphis, Tenn., Open But Buck didn't win again along the PGA circuit until yesterday. Then he pulled a sizzling 64 finish to win the Sioux City Open with 272—16 under par for the 72-hole route. The triumph was worth $2400 to White. Buck took the back nine apart in his last round as he wiped out a Siautroke disadvantage. He opened his closing spurt with successive eagles and wound up with a 31 to go with his first nine 33. He overtook the faltering Ed (Porky) Oliver who led with 202 for 54 holes. Porky finished with par 72; good for a second place tie at 274 with defending champion Jack Burke, Jr., and Skee Riegel. Burke, tied for 25th at 36 holes, rallied for 66's on the last two rounds yesterday. Lloyd Mangrum, the sensational favorite making his first tournament appearance since a near fatal plane crash injury last September, tired in the stretch for a 78. He was involved in a tie for 27th at 287. Club Owners Look For Commissioner NEW YORK (UP)—Baseball may be without a commissioner at least until December despite efforts of big league club owners to elect one today. A majority of the 18 executives said there isn't anybody among the eligibles with sufficient strength to command the backing of the needed 12 votes. Some among the 11 nominees still being considered—Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower, for instance—probably are unavailable. Del Webb, co-owner of the New York Yankees and chairman of the four-man screening committee, summed it up: "I don't know whether a commissioner will be named. But I won't let them hurry into it and get the wrong man." That seemed to be the feeling of almost all the club owners. Fred Saigh, president of the St. Louis Cardinals, went a step further: "It is important that we get the right man for the job, even if it means waiting until the December meetings—or even longer." A member of the screening committee said all 11 candidates who survived the voting Aug. 7 had been contacted. "Some," had declared their unavailability, but he declined to identify them. He did, however, confirm a previous Associated Press story that listed Eisenhower, Gen. Douglas MacArthur, Gen. Maxwell D. Taylor, Gen. Hoyt S. Vandenberg, President Ford Frick of the National league and President Warren Giles of the Cincinnati Reds among the 11. Back in the days when the Tribe was stumbling around in fourth place, Lopez was looking ahead to the current Cleveland home stand as the make-or-break phase of his club's pennant bid. As a 43rd birthday present to their well-liked pilot, the Indians opened the 18-game stadium stay last night with a 5-3 victory over Washington, boosting their league lead over the New York Yankees to a full game. Lopez wants to add four more games to that margin before the Indians leave on a 17-game tour of the east and west Sept. 7. The Tribe has a red-hot record of 42 victories against 16 defeats at home. The Indians have two more games with Washington, three with the Yankees and a Sunday twin-bill with the Boston Red Sox. Bob Feller, in quest of his 20th victory against five defeats, is Lopez choice to pitch tonight against the Washington nationals, who have taken it on the chin for nine games in a row. Lopez also plans to use Feller against Boston Sunday. From the very start Lopez has regarded the world champion Yanks as the team to beat. The standings bear him out. In his pennant calculations, Lopez is depending on the Tribe to win the three-game series with New York opening Thursday. LEGAL SAFECRACKER MURPHYSBORO, Ill.
