Anaheim Gazette by JOHN S. NEUBAUER He that trusteth in his own heart is a fool: but whoso walketh wisely, he shall be delivered.—Prov. 28:26. CALIFORNIANA—The Portola expedition camped on the present site of Carpenteria. Soldiers of the party gave it its present name. Father Juan Crespi called it "San Roque" and noted that oil deposits were present at La Brea. VIGNETTE—Ellis Ackerman says Bob Russell is really surprised at the rapid transformation of his place on East Orange thorpe. Just a week ago it was another orange grove beside the railroad tracks. Today the trees are gone and construction well under way. Next week he wouldn't be surprised to see a factory there producing the tools of war. "It's really remarkable, when you stop to think of it," Ackerman said. "They've got an order for several carloads of material to be spotted at the siding—a siding that isn't even there." Lorenzo Hampton who lives across the highway, knows that the complexion of Orangethorpe will be changed. So does A. A. McCormick, the friendly undertaker, who lives down the road a piece. George Ranger might tell you that the Anaheim Planning commission knew what of it was talking about when it objected to a private school being built on the corner of Raymond and Orangethorpe. If traffic was too heavy then, what will it be when the plant starts producing? BIG SHOW—John Beans Reardon will umpire the big game at La Palma Park t'marra afternoon. The Long Beach Youth Band, 100 strong, is to furnish music. Leave it to Pat Ahearn to do things right. SUGGESTION—We've already suggested traffic signals for Orangethorpe. Supervisor Ralph Fadden might also go into a huddle and do something about Orange county street names. Finstance Euclid avenue is Nicolas in Fullerton and after it is cut through to Imperial Highway it probably will be Hatt avenue in La Habra. Confusing, isn't it? PEOPLE — Dave Hernandez says he's got a "good" job in the offing. It seems like his draft board is getting it for him. Marlon Hamilton met Hoppe recently — Judge Gurman Hoppe, that is... Wally Rlutecel is doing a good job as president of the Fullerton Kiwanis club... Earle Tracy, the Legion's 21st District commander, is a swell guy who'll go out of his way for a good cause. FALSE ALARM—When Swafford, 16-year-old blue blonde, had an argument with mother, Blanche Senn, and stepfather, Carl Senn, she got and announced that she was going to the rest room at the park where they were waiting a girls softball game. She returned. When the girl to show up at home, the were notified and an all-public bulletin broadcast. Exeryonpected the worst: a girl was len from the park. Rul spread like wildfire. Gilie lieved kidnap victim. What pen? Well, the teen-age kid parently was the center of a mestic squabble and did sometime about it. Tain't a nice story; it wasn't right; either, for to withhold information from authorities when such information would have saved undue ammunition and saved the taxpayers money. NITECAPSULE—A wise knows a woman has her opinion—and there's no use arguing at it. Chambers Names Barnes, Vanderbilt Former Commies WASHINGTON (AP)—Whittaker Chambers testified today that the head of the communist underground in the United States once told him Joseph Barnes and Frederick Vanderbilt Field were members of the red underground. Chambers, confessed former courier for communist spies, said he was told that by J. Peters, Hungarian-born communist leader who fled this country several years ago. Chambers gave his testimony to the Senate Internal Security committee, which is inquiring into whether there have been subversive influences on U.S. Far Eastern policy. The hearings are centered now on the Institute of Pacific Relations (IPR), an organization created some 30 years ago for the avowed purpose of promoting study of the Pacific area. Both Barnes and Field have been connected with the IPR. Field is the New York millionaire left-winger now serving a jail term for contempt of court. The charge arose out of his refusal to give a federal judge information about the sources of bail money for communists. Barnes is now connected with a New York publishing firm. He formerly was a well known foreign correspondent for the New York Herald Tribune. Names of both men have been brought into the hearings previously. Barnes has denied he ever had any communist connections. Field once refused to answer a question at a Congressional hearing as to whether he had been surprised to see a factory there producing the tools of war. Alpha Beta Buyer Serving as Judge At County Fair George E. Martin, cattle buyer for the Alpha Beta Food Markets, is serving as a cattle judge for the Orange County Fair being held in Santa Ana. This is considered an honor among western cattle men and is a tribute to Martin's ability to judge good beef. The cattle being entered in the fair are raised by boys and girls who are members of the 4-H or Future Farmers of America. Alpha Beta has long been interested in the development of these two organizations and have done much toward helping them. At the close of most fairs Alpha Beta has bought one or more of the prize winning animals, often paying as much as 3 or 4 times the current market price. They consider this an investment in young people. Bob Lavoy, basketball star with the Indianapolis Olympians, is employed during the summer months as a radio announcer in Glasgow, Ky.
