EARTHQUAKES—Earthquakes have always been a significant factor in Southern California history. The first recorded earthquake was noted by Father Juan Crespi in his diary of the first Portola expedition in July 1769. The party experienced its first temblor while camped near the present site of Olive just east of Anaheim. Two other quakes were noted in the padre's diary while the party was camped in the Greater Los Angeles area. UNPREDICTABLE—Temblors are unpredictable. In 1812 "El Ano the los Temblores"—the year of the earthquakes—considerable damage was done to the missions up and down the coast. The severe shock was felt from San Diego to La Purisima. In the shocks must have been felt here; but since that was before Anaheim's time, it can be assumed that it did nothing more than scare "the living daylights out of the Indians" that dwelled in the hills behind Olive. OWENS VALLEY QUAKE — On March 26, 1872, one of California's most destructive quakes centered in the Owens Valley. Sixty persons were killed or injured at Lone Pine. Lone Pine was virtually wrecked. The towns of Independence, Fish Springs, Bishop and Little Lake suffered severe quake damage. S.F. QUAKE—Senior citizens of Anaheim will recall the quake on April 18, 1906, shook California from border to border. It almost completely demoralized communications and in San Francisco touched off the fire that burned over an area of eight square miles, killing 250 people, injured thousands and caused $300,000,000 damage. People of Anaheim were alarmed by the sharp earth tremor on that day. Old timers will tell you that the earth shock was a topic of considerable conversation and the Los Angeles newspaper extras were bought up as quickly. EMERGENCY—An emergency existed right here in Anaheim that night. Anaheim should had an adequate Civilian Defense set-up to cope with an eventuality. Now — this war scares—it has one. Ana is prepared to meet any enquiry—man made or cause one of Mother Nature's rampages. UNPREDICTABLE — Temblors are unpredictable. In 1812—"El Ano the los Temblores"—the year of the earthquakes—considerable damage was done to the missions up and down the coast. The severe shock was felt from San Diego to La Purisima. In the first quake the tower of Mission San Juan Capistrano fell, destroying the church and killing 40 neophytes. At San Gabriel the church was badly cracked and the main later fell. The second shock, Dec. 21, 1812, wrecked La Purisima, threw over the corner of Santa Inez, damaged the tower and facade of Santa Buenaventura and cracked the walls at San Fernando mission. Though these quakes did considerable damage to the large alobe structures little or no damage was done to the crudely constructed ranch houses. SEVERE—Three severe earth damage — Anaheim's most INGLEWOOD — On June 21, 1920, wrecked a large part of Inglewood and neighboring communities. Dishes were thrown from tables and windows broken in Anaheim. Though the quake did more than $100,000's worth of damage, no one was reported killed or injured. On June 29, 1925, the business district of Santa Barbara was demolished by a quake at 6:42 a.m. Seventeen deaths were reported and damage estimated at $15,000,000 was done. COMPLETING THE JOB—Dr. T.
