Seattle's Coast league Rainiers will try to put extra air in their tires, tonight, before taking off most important road trip season.
The Rainiers host Salem in the opener of a four-ries, hoping to pad their lead. Rogers Hornsbys' homde then will descend Angeles and Hollywood to game stand that should j decide the 1951 pennant run.

The Suds have taken 18 from Hollywood, 1 against Los Angeles. The Angels in a five-game starting Saturday, there next week with five at Helfy Earl Johnson, performance since joining six weeks ago has been a slated to pitch for the tonight. Quarter Horse Futurity Added To Pomona Stakes
POMONA—First running of the Pacific Coast Quarter Horse Futurity will be held at Los Angeles County Fair, opening here Sept. 14. Racing Secretary Herman Sharpe announced today.
Limited to two-year-olds and planned as an annual event, the new race carries a purse of $2500 and has attracted 28 nominations. Sharpe revealed Speed trials Sept. 16 will determine starters in the finals on Sept. 22.
Addition of the Futurity, Sharpe pointed out, marks a big forward step in the quarter horse sport, which proved a popular addition last year to the fair's full programs of thoroughbred and harness racing.
FOURTH DOWN AND GOAL TO GO—It's a little unseasonable, but grid tactics are no uncommon sight when those arch rivals—the Giants and the Dodgers—meet on the diamond. With the Dodgers ahead 6-5 and none out in the ninth inning in their game at Ebbets Field, N. Y. (8-9), Giant first baseman Whitey Lockman throws a body block on Dodger catcher Roy Campanella as he tries to score from first on Willie Mays' double. Whitey picks up a couple of yards but his line buck fails as Ump Art Gore calls him out. Dodgers won 6-5.

LOS ANGELES (UP)—The Los Angeles Rams were installed as seven point favorites today for their charity clash tomorrow night with the Washington Redskins.
The traditional pre-season battle will lift the lid on the potentialities of both national football league clubs.
The Rams, defending western division champions, won last year's struggle 17 to 14. The game ended 95,625 patrons into Memorial coliseum, a pro football record.
That tomorrow's edition will surpass or even approach that attendance figure is probably pure optimism, but the management anticipates its customary fat turnout.
Once again a display of aerial fireworks is in prospect with Ram quarterback Bob Waterfield, the NFL's leading passer last year, and Slingin' Sammy Baugh as the principals. Whatever records the veteran Baugh doesn't hold, Waterfield does.
Neither coach has announced his starting lineup. The outcome of the game may hinge on what happens up front. Fixed Basketball Delved Into
NEW YORK (UP)—The district attorney's office, delving into fixed basketball games, sought additional information today from a fifth man arrested in connection with the widespread scandal.
Indications were given by Vincent A. G. O'Connor, assistant district attorney, that the affair might spread into the deep south and far west.
Nathanial Brown, 33, of Brooklyn, was held in $10,000 bail as a material witness. O'Connor said he had been associated with four others under arrest on charges of bribing players to fix games.
Brown "has important information which he has yet to disclose," said O'Connor, adding that his investigators are nearing information involving additional unnamed players and colleges.
O'Connor said Brown had traveled to the far west in connection with fixes during the 1948-49 season. Aksted the significance of this, the official replied:
"He also went as far south as Louisiana."
Baugh.
Between Baugh and Gilmer last year, the Redskins completed 253 passes for 2,078 yards and 18 touchdowns. 10 of them tossed by Slingin' Sam.
The Rams will counter with Waterfield and his Number One boy, Norm Van Brocklin.
Liteweight Champ Takes on Mario
LOS ANGELES (UP) — Jimmy Carter, the world lightweight champion takes on switch hitting Mario Trigo in a scheduled non-title 10-rounder tonight and the guesssports are toying with the idea of an upset.
Trigo's prospects were inflated perceptibly yesterday with the showing Carter gave in a sparring session with a featherweight named Bobby Garza. Garza's style, or lack thereof, is much the same as Trigo's possibly because he happens to be Trigo's stablemate.
Anyway, Garza nailed Carter again and again with roundhouse punches and baffled the champ completely. And Trigo is 12 pounds heavier than Garza.
Carter, the New Yorker who took the title May 25 with an upset knockout over Ike Williams, will be shooting for his sixth straight Kayo. His latest victims were Enrique Bolanos in the seventh round and Del Flanagan in the sixth.
Trigo; a Los Angeles boy, lost by a technical knockout to Carter about two years ago. At the end of seven rounds, however, Mario was leading on all three scorecards, but on eye cut and two knockdowns in the eighth finished him.
Both fighters have improved considerably since that time.
Rainiers Take Off On Road Trip
Seattle's Coast league leading Rainiers will try to put a little extra air in their tires, starting tonight, before taking off on their most important road trip of the season.
The Rainiers host Sacramento in the opener of a four-game series, hoping to pad their five-game lead. Rogers Hornsby's hungry hordle then will descend on Los Angeles and Hollywood for a 10-game stand that should just about decide the 1951 pennant race.
As a matter of record, the Suds may have more trouble with Sacramento than with the third-place Angels or runnerup Stars. The Sacs have won nine of the 19 games played with Seattle this year, the closest any club in the league has come to breaking even with the pace-setters.
The Suds have taken 11 out of 18 from Hollywood, 10 of 14 against Los Angeles. They'll meet the Angels in a five-game series starting Saturday, then follow next week with five at Hollywood.
Lefty Earl Johnson, whose 6-1 performance since joining the club six weeks ago has been a big help, is slated to pitch for the Rainiers tonight. Orval Grove (8-6) is Sacramento's starting choice.
Hollywood's Pinky Woods (12-8), back in the good graces of Manager Fred Fancy after a sore arm incident, has been named to start for the Stars at Oakland. The Oaks will counter with Slow-Stuff Red Hardy (2-1).
Last place San Francisco invades Los Angeles and leads with right-handed ace Lou Burdette (12-11) against the Angels' War-ridden Indians Continue To Whiz by All Opposition
Cleveland's onrushing Indians continue to whiz by all opposition as the "Lopez Limited" speeds steadily toward its destination—Pennantville.
No wonder the Indians, led by manager Al Lopez, are talking pennant today. They never were so well off.
The Tribe won again last night, defeating Detroit, 2-1. Here is what the victory meant to the Indians.
It increased their first place margin over the runnerup New York Yankees in the American League to two and a half games as Philadelphia shellacked the Bronxites for the third straight time, 16-8.
It stretched the Tribe's winning streak to 11 straight, only two short of the club's all-time record of 13 accomplished in 1942.
It marked the 19th triumph for Bob Feller, who celebrated a "night" in his honor by limiting the Tigers to seven hits.
It was the eighth consecutive complete job by a Cleveland hurler and it was the 12th straight game the Indians held their opposition to four or less runs. It also was Cleveland's 14th win in 15 meetings with Detroit.
"We're on our way," said Lopez. "I don't see how anyone can stop us now."
If we can build up a lead of five games during our coming home stay against the east, we're getting great pitching and timely hitting. Ray Boone and Bobby Avila have been splendid at short and third and Al Itoe have been helping with them.
Touring Track Team Show Superiority
BIRMINGHAM, England (F) — America's touring track and field athletes again showed their superiority over some of England's best performers in winning 10 of 12 events last night.
Charlie Thomas of San Antonio, Tex., paced the visitors with victories in the 100 and 200-meter dashes. Thomas was clocked in ten seconds flat in winning the century from his teammate Guy Bryan of the San Francisco Olympic club. Bryan also was third in the hop, step and jump.
Other American winners included:
Javelin—Frank Held, San Francisco, 230 feet 5 inches.
High jump—Herman Wyatt, San Jose State, 6 feet 7 inches.
Pole vault—Bob Smith, Los Angeles, 13 feet one inch.
Half mile—Bob Chambers, Los Angeles, 1:52.3.
Medley relay—United States (Chambers, Bryan, Thomas, and Herb McKenley) 3:32.9.
NEW CHAMPION—Randy Turpin, new world's middleweight boxing champion, grins as he strolls the day after whipping "Sugar" Ray Robinson, 160-pound king, in London.
