MORE ABOUT... Selfridge (Continued from Page 1) "Faith of Our Fathers" and "Now the Day is Over." Mrs. Besler attended the Cincinnati college of music, the Peabody institute in Baltimore and other schools of music. At the age of five she was considered something of a child prodigy on the plano and actually won a piano contest before she was old enough to go to school. It was while she was at the Cincinnati college of music that she decided to become a singer. She sang with Cincinnati music groups, the Philadelphia Opera company and other major music groups. She then turned her attention to musical comedy and light opera. During the war years she appeared in some 30 different major stage productions in leading theatrical centers of the United States from Broadway to Philharmonic Auditorium in Los Angeles. One of her shows "The Great Waltz" set an attendance record at the famous St. Louis Municipal Opera when it drew more than 15,000 persons a performance for 10 days. In addition she became one of the leading authorities on operetta when she wrote articles on the subject which appeared in national music publications. She has done considerable coaching and teaching. Bethel Baptist Sermon Title "Christ The Head of The Church," has been chosen by Rev. In California we have hired men looking for jobs and at least part of our troubles are directly traceable to complete lack of leadership. Many growers here are hoping that the Sunkist people will be better able to understand Florida Mutual after talking with Saurman and may change their opinion about it in relation to California. Mr. Wilcox, a month or two ago, stated that California did not need a Mutual. The fact remains that Mutual has put Florida growers on their financial feet and greatly helped the whole economic structure of the southern state. So Full of Fun for Everyone! Oil (Continued from Page 1) city be bound, or influenced, by the precedent thus established?" was the sense of his statement. Public opinion, contrary to what might be expected, is not divided along property-owned lines. Property owners who might be expected to profit from the Steele Co.'s prospecting dispute the right of the city to grant leases for drilling sites. Others who own no property take the view that revenue gained by the city from such a lease is for the benefit of all citizens. It appears that the City Council was wholly within its rights under the provisions of Ordinance 774 in signing the drill site lease without consulting with the planning commission. It has been held by some that the council has earned censure by acting high-handedly, but such is not the case. Some have taken exception to Mr. Thompson's statement that drill sites may spread throughout the city if the present permit is CARNIVAL OF VALUES! RETURN FROM TRIP Mr. and Mr. Sam Hilgenfeld returned this week from a two week and 1500-mile auto trip around Northern California. Two weeks ago they left Anaheim for Sacramento to visit their daughter, and then on to Hayward to visit Mrs. Hilgenfeld's sister. During the time traveling they visited Lake Tahoe and Donner Lake, which is located on the Reno side of the mountains. Mrs. Hilgenfeld said she was very much impressed with Donner Lake. In that locality there is a landmark first made by our forefathers as they crossed the plains and entered California through Donner Pass by Donner Lake. Mrs. Hilgenfeld also remarked that the weather was refreshing in the mountains after the heat of Sacramento. $21,500 in Permits Issued by Building Dept. in Past Week Following a record-breaking week, Anaheim Building department had only $21,500 in permits It appears that the City Council was wholly within its rights under the provisions of Ordinance 774 in signing the drill site lease without consulting with the planning commission. It has been held by some that the council has earned censure by acting highhandedly, but such is not the case. Some have taken exception to Mr. Thompson's statement that drill sites may spread throughout the city if the present permit is given. That situation is under strict control says the city council, and, as advisory body to the council, the planning commission would at least be able to make its wishes known. Furthermore, it is said the permits cannot be granted without public hearings at which the public has a chance to be heard. A solution to the whole controversy was heard at a local coffee mill, which might well be considered. "Why not solve the whole thing by giving oil drilling a heavy industrial classification under the zoning ordinance?" was the meat of the suggestion, "and that would automatically restrict any drilling activities, pumping, sump holes and all the other objectionable features of oil production to areas set apart for just that sort of thing!" Oil, like murder, has a way of coming out. Wonder what it will do in Anaheim? issued during the past week to report today. Stand still and silently watch the world go by—and it will.
