When thou passest through the waters, I will be with thee—Isa. 43:2.
CALIFORNIANA—The "Know Nothing" party, a secret political organization, held its first State convention at Sacramento, Aug. 7, 1855. Its platform based chiefly on the opposition of foreigners and foreign immigration. The organization was active since 1854 and had chapters in most mining camps and villages. It carried municipal elections in Marysville, Sacramento, and elsewhere. The party nominated J. Neely Johnson for governor; Robert M. Johnson for lieutenant-governor and Hugh C. Murray and David S. Terry for State Supreme Court justices. All were elected in the election of Sept. 5, 1855. The party was anti-Catholic and anti-Chinese and sponsored much of the legislation that restricted the liberties of the celestials.
NOTES—Alonzo Corona, the Buena Park trucker, hasn't forgotten his schoolday baseball career. His backstopping ended rather abruptly when he took one in the midsection. In those days kids caught without masks, chest protectors or shinguards... Douglas Preston Wheeler believes business comes before pleasure. He had to give up managing the Buena Park Lynx. Blaine Averett whose wife, Patricia, plays for the Lynx will take over the managerial duties... Sheriff James Musick has been selected for pro-
The Lord shall guide the continually, and satisfy thy soul—Isa. 58:11.
CALIFORNIANA — Gov. Jose Figueroa issued his famous Reglamentto Provisional para la secularización de las misiones de alta California which provided for the conversion of missions into pueblos; friars were relieved of temporal duties; each head of a family was given a lot 100 to 400 varas square; ejidos to be assigned for pueblos; half of the livestock, chattels, seeds were to be distributed pro rata; with the government to be in the hands of ayuntamientos; mission libraries and church goods remained in charge of the priests under this provision of Aug. 9, 1834. The Reglamentto was the first major piece of printing to be undertaken by California's first printer, Agustin Zamorano.
WORLD EVENTS—Anaheimers are wondering what effect the UN truce talks will have on their lives and those of their loved ones. Like President Truman many Anaheimers believe that Soviet military might launch an aggression in one of the world's numerous trouble zones... Had something came of the Kaesong truce talks, many Anaheimers would have been returned to civilian status. As long as the international tension remains, more and more Anaheimers will don the uniform and prepare for any eventuality... Anaheim's indus-
His backstopping ended rather abruptly when he took one in the midsection. In those days kids caught without masks, chest protectors or shinguards.
Douglas Preston Wheeler believes business comes before pleasure. He had to give up managing the Buena Park Lynx. Blaine Averett whose wife, Patricia, plays for the Lynx will take over the managerial duties. Sheriff James Musick has been selected for promotion to the rank of major by the Marine Corps reserve. He is one of 265 captains on inactive reserve to receive such promotions.
VIGNETTE—The familiar old itinerant who trudged along the highways picking up old bottles and other salvagable materials has gone from this earthly scene. He perished in flames as his cardboard hacienda went up in flames. The old man's lonely existence has ended. He died in the 67th year of his life—alone, as he had lived. But yet the old man had courage, fortitude and determination. He must have been proud in his loneliness for being self-sufficient in an age when so many expect something for nothing. He earned his meager existence.
PERSONALITIES—See where Albert Zugsmith publicity accelerator for American Pictures Corp., RKO-Pathe Studios is getting publicity for Paula Dorety in the moom-picture columns. They're discussing the Anaheim lassie's 39-inch TV personality. Willie Pryor tells us that there was a quite a stink in Santa Ana last week. The overtaxed sewers overflowed. That reminds us of the time Fullerton west-end sewers clogged and effluent backed up in bath tubs and flowed down the streets. Kermitt Wood got so mad about the condition that he ran for city council and was elected. Placentia's police chief Dean Hasson is doing a mighty good job. Placentia is readily getting rid of its slum conditions. It's an example a lot of other cities might follow.
PEOPLE—Notice the pictures of the McCracken trial jury on the GAZETTE bulletin board...

PEOPLE—Notice the pictures of the McCracken trial jury on the GAZETTE bulletin board? A lot of 'em are shielding their faces as if they had done something to be ashamed of... W. J. Blackburn apparently slugged the wrong newspaperman. Perry Fowler, the L.A. newsphographer, more than held his own with the irate juror... Mike McGonigle got a dirty look when he greeted one of the jurors with a friendly: "Hi, juror!"... Don Leibhart is limping. It's his old knee injury... Joe Mora, the softballer, is quite a musician. He and Paul Salazar have an orchestra... Placentia's Barbara Dolbee would make a mightly lovely successor to Heavenly Helen Weir as Miss Orange County... Harold Welch who used to be the Edison company's big gear in Northern Orange county has been promoted. He has a swivel chair job in the main office, directing personnel. Congratulations... Jim Talcott's Orange county map is a collector's item. It's historically complete...
NITECAPSULE—Grouche Marx is right. We owe our government a great deal, but where are we going to get the money to pay for it.
SPORTNOTES — Tournaments are the vogue. Jerry Kehr, the Santa Barbara college athlete, is staging a baseball tourney at Buena Park for teen-agers — 16 and under—and Roy Merk's Anaheimers have a might good chance of bringing home the trophy... Don Liebhart's Anaheim Roaring Rainbows (call 'em Kaleidoscopes if y'wish) will prove to be a potent factor in Fullerton's Softball tournament. With a break, the Leibhart-Dave Hernandez coached youngsters should win... George Blaeholder's nephew, Lawrence, is pitching for Glen Conradi's Garden Grove youngsters... Arky Vaughan's nephew, Dickie, catches for Lee Kavanagh's kids over at Fullerton. In 1935 Arky was the leading hitter for the majors with a .385 mark. Incidentally, Vaughan was playing semi-pro ball with Steve Luther's Cypress Merchants 20 years ago...
PREDICTION—It's no secret, Anaheimers will be watching the 1951 World Series on their TV sets. Robert Rossberg, the telephone man, could tell you that
everything is ready for transcontinental TV viewing. They're just waiting 'til the gentleman in Blair House sets the day for the "big show". The overland telegraph line was completed in October 24, 1861. The first transcontinental telephone conversation was between Alexander Graham Bell and his assistant Thomas Watson on Jun. 15, 1915.
NITECAPSULE—It isn't the money, but the humiliation that makes the "pants burglar" such a haunting character.

Fair on Aug. 17, according to White King Soap representative Jerry Vaughn.
Won for answering the company's Question-of-the-Day and having a box of White King Soap on hand when called upon yesterday, the prize is one of three being given in the Orange county area. Later the same day Maxine Stickley of Santa Ana won a Westinghouse register.
Currently the White King Soap company is awarding a variety of Westinghouse Laundromats, refrigerators, ranges, irons, toasters, and food mixers to homemakers using White King soap and able to pre-sent a box when the White King doorbell ringer arrives.
