BETROTHAL NEWS was revealed today by Mr. and Mrs. Harold Mack, 1216 Pearl St., when they announced that their daughter, Sylvia, will wed Arthur Altheide in November. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Altheide of Winston fd.
Northern Orange County Pan Hellenic Plans September Benefit Brunch
Among the first social events scheduled for this fall is the Northern Orange County Pan-Hellenic's Annual Scholarship Benefit, to be held this year on September 15 at the Sunny Hills Recreation Center, Fullerton.
Plans are well under way to make this year's party a brunch and card party, as festive and as successful as in previous years, with more scholarships for worthy and needy girls from this area as the goal.
The members of the Pan-Hellenic, whose bond is common membership in national college sororities, are working to increase the size and number of their scholarship grants, as in most cases this aid is the deciding factor in the recipient's being able to further her education.
Committee heads have been busy all summer, under the able direction of Mrs. C. J. Stull of Fullerton, General Chairman. Mrs. Duke Clark of North Janss st. is in charge of Tables; Mrs. H. B. Douglas of Fullerton, Decorations; Mrs. R. A. Shellabarger of Fullerton, Prizes... these have always been the source of much excitement and pleasure, as the local merchants are most generous in their support, and their contributions are outstanding in quality. Mrs. Sam Ferraris of Fullerton is planning a surprise menu for this year's party... a departure from the usual coffee and doughnut brunch. Mrs. Charles Peterson, Fullerton, is in charge of Tickets, and her sister, Mrs. Joseph Neighbors has charge of Tallies. Mrs. James Carter, Anaheim, is publicity chairman.
Pan-Hellenic will meet on August 13 at La Palma Park to wind up the details for their party. Members will be reminded to contact their friends about it in an effort to exceed last year's attendance of over 400. The Sunny Hills Recreation Center was again selected for the party as it can comfortably accommodate several hundred more guests.

First Mineral Society Show Gems
Who saw the gem show of Orange Coast Mineral and Jewelry Society at the Orange Fair last year will want one show again this year.
It will be a beautiful crystal with many of the club's contributing their specimen to its beauty. There will be a large fluorescent and those who have not fluorescent minerals have a heat in store.
You are viewing the cases exhibit which will be around the sides of the this year to give more space building—be sure and for the Australian opals. One of the best opal displays in the county.
Watch for the "Coon Hollowedony." The fire in these runs a close second to the opals. And these stones and on the California desert. Will also see several displaying "Horse Canyon" well as displays containing mineral specimens. It will be a chess set hand of agate and silver which is of the most outstanding of exhibits.
You see the transparence which are in the show, you realize why "rockhounds" rockhounds."
Will be a working exhibit with the club members will skins, cut and make cabachring settings. This exhibit in the center of the room represents any piece of fashion forecast for Fall-Winter.
"The Shape"—the year of the shape—looms ahead in ready-to-wear as newest of all in silhouette. This means a skirt that bells out bolstered by myriads of petticoats, not only with dresses, but under suit skirts as well. This shaped treatment is important in bodices, too, where shoulders melt into sleeves in curved line, or sleeves are set into the shoulder in a point. Then at the hipline and waist, "The Shape" leaves its mark, emphasizing tiny waistlines and gently rounded hips, with a definite trend away from the arched, stiffened treatment of the past several seasons. This is the fashion picture for the coming fall and winter season as seen by the fashion staff of Women's Wear Daily.
There is a host of new fitted coats that emphasize "The Shape" and there are new narrower loose coats that round over the hips when short, or taper at the hemline when long; these last called "parenthesis silhouette."
Sleeves show their "Shape" in the "chicken leg" of Dior. They are oval in their inset seaming and fuller top, tapering narrowly on the arm. This shaping expresses itself in frequent fantasy by way of bloused fullness, dolman cuts, batwing depth and push-up types—and many, many coat sleeves with adjustable cuffs being referred to as "cocktail sleeves."
Fabrics have their "Shape," too—bulky and with great variety in textures. These range from the very conversational poodle cloths to hairy, silky surfaces.
Personal Mention
Mrs. Helen McLean of 10592 Rose st., is in Oregon for a month visiting relatives.
The Elton C. Snavely's and their three sons Donald, Richard and Garry of 6802 E. Ball rd., are spending the week at Newport, fishing and swimming.
Mrs. Gladys Sackett of Laguna Beach, who teaches third grade at Savanna school, is spending the summer vacation in Canada and Alaska.
Girl Scout Camp Program Tonight
Pantomime skirts, excursion trips, tasty cook outs, interesting arts and crafts, folk dancing, general assemblies with the flag ceremonies are some of the ingredients mixed into Day Camp of Fullerton Hillcrest park, to make it a memorable experience.
Plans are now being made by the junior staff for the final program tonight. One of the highlights being the presentation of an original drama entitled "A Day at Camp in the Life of a Brownie." Unit 5 was unanimously elected to again give their clever pantomime act which completely buffled the entire group now enjoying Brownie Day Camp.
However all of the skirts this time have been "outstanding" a veteran consultant of three sessions was over heard to remark.

A well cooked meal of tender juicy meat, succulent vegetables a crisp, sold salad and a satisfying dessert is a treat to eat but it is something else again to the home-maker who must plan and prepare it when the thermometer hovers around 100 degrees.
Even a usually agile mind has a way of going blank when faced with the continual task of planning hot weather meals that are appetizing as well as healthful. The requirements of a good meal is that it conform to the budget, be easy to prepare and appeal to those who are to eat it.
For meal suggestions that rat A-1 on all counts, I have shoppe Anaheim's leading food markets consulted the cook books, and experimented on my family. The following meals are the results.

Fabrics have their "Shape," too—bulky and with great variety in textures. These range from the very conversational poodle cloths to hairy, silky surfaces, and nubby tweeds and ribbed stripes of two tunes.
"Shapes" at the neckline offer a contrast of the revived cardigan, collarless look-or big capey collars that crush over the shoulders or drape back for a new decollete look.
Even in accessories there is "Shape." Big is the word for jewelry-bigger pins set with bigger stones-bigger earrings in huge button shapes-big contour types that cover the ear or curve up the ear-big heraldic pins, large and widespread to cover the shoulder like a big pad. And there's a new place to wear jeweled pins-not just at the lapel, but on cuffs, on the hipline, at the back of the waistline.
Neckwear takes "Shape" in bigger effects-scarfs that tuck in at the neckline and pouf out under the chin. Stoles are shaped for better fit over the shoulders.

"However all of the skits this time have been outstanding" a veteran consultant of three sessions was over heard to remark.
Groups visiting Mr. Johnny Wagner's Horse Ranch of Placentia, learned that a Palomeno is a color, not a breed, that a nice combination is obtained by crossing a buckskin and a sorrel; that proper diet of flax seed and eggs produces a shiny fleecy coat. Of course, all of that loving care of brushing also accounts for the beautiful sheen of Mr. Wagner's horses that have been winning ribbons and trophies since 1904.
"Horses like dogs are bred for a purpose, he explained with the bull dog type having short front legs with sturdy hind quarters to round up cattle on the range. A quarter horse has been bred so that it can sprint for a quarter of a mile."
With a great deal of confidence gained through the years, Mr. Wagner stuck his head and fingers in the mouth of his pet to examine his teeth. The little Brownies took his word for the fact that black spots or cups were already forming which indicated it was nearing 12 years of age.
"The next stage is for the teeth to begin wearing off, when around 20, the teeth will begin to straighten out. The expression buck teeth is very expressive of a young horse," was his concluding remark.

JONES' DECISIVE VICTORY ATLANTA (UP)—The most decisive victory in a playoff for the USGA Open Championship occurred back in 1929. That was when Bobby Jones beat Al Espinosa by 23 strokes at Winged Foot, Marmaroneck, N.Y. That was the fourth Open playoff for the Atlanta amateur. He beat Bobby Cruickshank by two shots in 1923, lost to Willie MacFarlane in a double playoff in 1925 by one stroke, and to Johnny Farrell by a shot in their 1928 playoff.
