Slated for Annual City Park Program
Anaheim residents who enjoyed last night's talent show put on by the Recreation Department, can look forward to another evening of the same next summer. Last night's success was so gratifying, the department decided to make the show an annual affair.
More than 500 persons were seated in the outdoor theatre last night.
Nine-year-old Emma Ortiz captivated the audience from the very first with her version of the "Mexican Hat Dance," Russell Lee Morgan of Attica, Indiana, followed with a song, "It Is No Secret" and "I Apologize."
The evening's balmy weather transported spectators easily to the "Land of Enchantment" as Dolores Pool and Doris Rouland swung their sarongs to the strains of "Hawaiian War Chant."
Barbara Fay Hawkins of Santa Ana, a two time veteran of TV shows, sang "Room Full of Roses" and Corleen Buschena, a 9 year old trouper, sang "May Breezes."
Joan Spencer, 18, well known vocalist around Anaheim, sang "Come Back to Sorrento" followed by Bill Sitten, 13 year old, with "Beer Barrel Polka" and "Just Because." Jo Ann Faust tripped the light fantastic to "Whispering" and 14 year old Paul Winters sang "Malaquina."
"On Top of Old Smoky" was delivered by 10 year old Bill Hoban.
Jo Ann Burdick, renowned local baton twirler, displayed her art to "Stars and Stripes Forever."
Hit of the show came with the appearance of John Faessel, assisted by his sister Joan.
Johnnie is only 15 years old but his magic is made with a polished flip of the wrist, and a stageful of hopping bunnies.
The two Hawaiian dance interpreters returned to grace the stage with their versions of "Hawaiian Hospitality" and "South Seas Sadie."
As a grand finale Delores Glardino sang "Ave Maria" and "Thine Alone." Delores has performed many times and her powerful culinary voice completely captivated her audience.
Mike Casey, me extraordinaire—former master of ceremonies of his own teen-age TV show and two TV shows of his own in the offing—did a masterful job of holding the show together and getting a few laughs from the appreciative audience. Mr. Casey, of Whittier, attended Fullerton J. C. last year.
Mary Lawrence, graduate of Marywood high school, accompanied many of the acts.

Shvernik's message, bristling with denunciations of western "warmongering," was accompanied by a 2500 word resolution proclaiming Russia's alleged dedication to world peace.
This appeared to be Moscow's answer to a resolution Congress passed last June. The American document expressed friendship and goodwill toward the Russian people.
President Truman sent it along to Shvernik, technically Russia's chief of states. Aug. 17. And he called on Russia's leaders to make it public.
In his accompanying letter, Shvernik called for an agreement by the United States, Russia, Britain, France and communist China to disarm and prohibit manufacture of atomic weapons. He reiterated Russia's willingness to agree to some form of inspection as a guarantee of her good faith.

"To the best of my knowledge and belief, these (90) are all." he said.
Gen. Irving did reveal, however, that in addition to the 90, at least 29 other cadets were investigated on the same charges. There never was enough evidence to punish them, he added.
Speaking of the greatest scandal in West Point's 150 years, the superintendent said:
"I feel we probably are cleaner than almost any other institution. The fact that we took action makes us look bad."
Of the 90 cadets themselves, Gen. Irving said: "I feel they are fundamentally a good bunch of boys. They probably got a wrong sense of values and got off on the wrong step. I think they are basically honorable."
The general was asked about the charges that "stool pigeons" circulated among the cadets in an effort to trap cadets in any wrongdoing. He replied that as far as he knew, there were no stool pigeons.
"The initial information was brought to the attention of the commandant by a cadet who had been approached to go into this ring," he said.
Gen. Irving was asked why, in his opinion, Army's great varsity football team was at the hub of the scandal. Of the football players, he said:
"The boys get very close—a very close friendship. They see a buddy in distress, and they get a false sense of values. They think that by helping him, they are aiding the academy."
The general said that West Point in the future, as in the past, is going to insist on its athletes keeping up academic standards.
"We have no easy courses here," he said. "Everybody takes the same courses, and they are hard ones."

drilling control so that we may be able to give the maximum protection and impose the minimum burdens on the residents of this city."
A representative of the Steele Oil Corp., was present and asked to be heard. He outlined the drilling program of the company and stated that the first drill site would be in the industrial area north of La Palma; a second would be on E. Wilhelmina, near N. Olive, providing, of course, the first tests were successful. A third site has been selected. It lies between Sycamore and Wilhelmina and Palm and Citron.
From each of these sites will be drilled many wells by the whipstock method to surrounding areas within a half-mile radius: The oil company spokesman agreed that statements made by commissioners as to the probability of the Anaheim oil field covering the whole city of Anaheim, were correct and he described his analysis on the city map.
A motion for a variance (with a public hearing) to permit the drilling was before the Planning Commission yesterday, but action was postponed for 30 days pending the City Council's consideration of the proposal to have a city-wide vote on the proposal to drill within the city limits of Anaheim.
