Midgets Win Anaheim Midgets just about sewed up the league as they edged by Orange yesterday on the losers diamond. With Paul Grover gone, Joe Habener and Ken Harker took over the pitching duties and limited Orange to three hits. Anaheim scored two runs in the first on singles by Jack Trott and Frank Doretti and an error by the catcher when he overthrew first on a dropped third strike, to allow two runs to score. In the fourth, they scored what proved to be the winning run on a walk, an error and a single by Ken Harker, Ken Harker—and Jack Trott each got two hits for the locals. Yankees Replace Eddie Ford The New York Yankees appear to have come up with a worthy replacement for 21-year-old Eddie Ford. He is 21-year-old Tom Morgan. One of the reasons critics were predicting the fall of the Yankee empire last spring was because of Ford's call to the armed forces. "Where will the Yankees get a replacement for Ford?" they asked. "Who among Casey Stengel's newcomers is going to win those nine games that Ford coped after the Fourth of July?" Early hopes that Morgan might do it faded when the young right-hander was shipped to Kansas City last May after losing his first start. But Morgan came back after a month of seasoning and washed no time filling Ford's shots. Stengel started him against Washington on June 28 and he responded by shutting out the Senators, 3-0. Since then he has tackled up seven more triumphs without a defeat. His eighth straight came last night, a 4-0 whitewash job against the same Senators. It was his third shutout. He won a 1-0 hiting duel from Ned Garver of St. Louis on July 20. The victory stretched the Yankees' first-place American League lead over second-place Cleveland to one full game and over third-place Boston to four games. Both Cleveland and Boston were idle. In the only other big league activity, Chicago's fourth-place White Sox whipped the Tigers in Detroit, 10-1. First baseman Eddie Robinson cracked two home runs, a double and single to lead the Sox attack while righthander Joe Dobson stopped the Tigers with five hits for his seventh win. Morgan surrendered only five hits, all singles. The Schatzors staged scoring threats only in the first and eighth innings. Gil Coan and Mickey Vernon singled in between outs in the first but Sam Mele struck out to end the inning. Pete Runnels singled and Cass Michaels walked to open batting title challenge Richie Ashbaker. Stan Musial of St. Louis new challenger for the league batting title in burn, the Phillies' fielder. Batting Title Challenged by Richie Ashburn Stan Musial of St. Louis has a new challenger for the National league batting title in Richie Ashburn, the Phillies fleet center fielder. Ashburn tops in total hits most of the season, passed Jackie Robinson of Brooklyn during the week ending Sunday to make his bid. Musial at 370 still holds a 13-point edge over Ashburn's 357 but the persistent Phil is climbing fast. While Stan lost five points in a week, Ashburn moved up six with 14 hits in 23 at bats for a long 321 pace. Robinson troubled by a sore midfielder stumped 13 points to 345. With eight weeks to play, it looks like a three-man scrap for the others are scattered far behind. Tied for fourth at 328, 42 points behind Musial, Johnny Wyrostek of Chelsea and Toby Campanella of Brooklyn. Al Dink of New York sixth with 321, followed by Winer of Pittsburgh and Bob Elliott of Boston tied at 320. Kiner and Ashburn were the only top 10 hitters who boosted their averages during the week. Pee Wee Reese at 317 and Carl Furillo at 316 give Brooklyn fifth and tenth positions and four of the top ten. Duffern H. Helsing On Training Cruise Of Caribbean Ports Midshipman Duffern H. Helsing, USNROTC, of 706 North Zeyn st. Anaheim, a student at Stanford university, Palo Alto, and former AUHS student body president, departed from Norfolk, Vt., Aug. 3 on a one-month cruise to U.S. and Caribbean ports. The cruise is part of the Navy’s annual summer training program for reserve officer candidates. The cruises provide “on-the-job” experience in all phases of Navy shipboard operations each summer for more than 9,000 U.S. Naval Academy and NROTC midfielders. Movie Ball Game Draws Big Crowd Bob Hope pitched a mean curve ball—it sailed down on a tiny parachute. Tony Curtis got the loudest screams from the fans, and Shelley Witness smashed a hit off the shapely delivery of Jake Russell. So it went last night at the fifth annual “out-of-this-world series” baseball game sponsored by the Hollywood Junior Chamber of Commerce. A spokesman estimated a capability-plus crowd of 11,000 paid $23,500 to see a star team called The Bob Hopefuls’ play (Gary Cooper’s “Cutthroats.” Proceeds go to youth welfare activities. The score? “O criminy, I don’t know,” croaked Andy Devine, the game’s ponderous impire, when the thing was over. He and coquille “Cuddles” Sakall were pushed onto the field in wheelchairs. Danny Thomas was master of ceremonies. Cooper arrived on the Gilmore Field diamond in Hinge-topped surrey with Marilyn Maxwell. Dorothy Lamour and Miss Russell. These were among the “bat girls,” arrestingly chant in shorts, who later got into the game. Others included Dorothy Malone, Gale Robbins, and Mona Freeman. Hope stepped out of an imitation money truck onto a red carpet spread by an aide. Three bat girls salaamed. The aide, announcer Hy Averback, in white tie and tails, caught the balls thrown by catcher Frank Faylen and handed them to pitcher hope. An elegant player, in short shorts and snood-like cap, Hope had a standin do his base running. Acrobat Pat Moran flip-flopped safely onto home base while Hope strolled gracefully in his wake. Lionel Hampton’s band paraded around the bases, blaring out “Flying Home” when Hampton socked a homer. Bat Girl Hattie McDaniel wore blue pedal pushers and loud socks. If You Drive! Don’t Drink AUHS student body president, departed from Norfolk, Vt., Aug. 3 on a one-month cruise to U. S. and Caribbean ports. The cruise is part of the Navy's annual summer training program for reserve officer candidates. The cruises provide "on-the-job" experience in all phases of Navy shipboard operations each summer for more than 9,000 U. S. Naval Academy and NROTC midshipmen from colleges and universities throughout the nation. Five ships of the Atlantic Fleet, including the battleship USS Missouri, make up the training squadron that will visit New York, Colon, Panama, and Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.
