Anaheim Gazette by JOHN S. NEUBAUER Let my heart be sound in thy statutes; that I shall not be ashamed—Psa. 119:80. CALIFORNIANA — Portola camped on the site of the present La Brea Pits in Los Angeles, thus becoming the first white man to discover oil in California. Father Juan Crespi noted the event in his diary. Later the Spaniards discovered brea seepages in Brea Canyon, it was these oil puddles that caused Von Stroble, former Anaheim mayor, to drill for oil in Brea. LINES-O-TYPE — Brent Wahlberg paid $10 to meet another young Republican in Fullerton. LeRoy Lyom, Jr., the young attorney who lived in Anaheim for a number of years, is a research officer of the United Nations peace mission at Kaesong, Korea. Northern Orange county was saddened by the news that the Rev. Pedro Penamil died at his boyhood home in Cacavelos, Leon, Spain. He was a distinguished linguist, author and Catholic youth leader. Judge Leonard P. Bonnat is really carrying on a one-man crusade against drunk driving. The judge is anything but lenient, and rightly so. If the letter of the law is enforced, the highways will become safer. Good going, Judge! TRUE ENOUGH ABOUT BEARS I CATCH 'EM MIT' MY BEAR PAWS! THE AMERICAN BLACK BEAR CRITCHES ANTS BY STICKING ITS PAW INTO THE NEST AND LEFTING THEM SWAGG OVER IT THEN LICKING THEM OFF... BROWS IS THE BLACK BEAR THAT ONE IN FLORIDA CARRIED OFF A 100-FOUND PIKE IN ITS FOREPINS... THE BLACK BEAR SWALLOWS STRINGY YELLOW JACKETS WHOLE-2 QUARTERS ARE FOUND IN ONE BEAR'S BOMACH. Merk stresses hard, clean baseball and the spirit of true sportsmanship... Northern Orange county was saddened by the news that the Rev. Bonint is really carrying on a one-man crusade against drunk driving. The judge is anything but lenient, and rightly so. If the letter of the law is enforced, the highways will become safer. Good going, Judge! DATELINE—Anaheimers make news! Unfortunately, a lot of news appearing under Anaheim date-lines is anything but credit to Orange county's industrial center... The beating of Jim May, 73, on an Anaheim street... The burning of an elderly man's shack... Drunken drivers... And plain ordinary scandal doesn't add to Anaheim's reputation for being one of the Southland's friendliest communities. BASEBALL—We've said it before, and we say it again, Don Derr and Roy Merk are doing a mighty swell job teaching the national pastime to youthful Anaheimers... And Clare Van Hoerebeke did an exceptional job with the Junior Legion nine... Merk's Midgets and Juniors are currently setting the pace in Orange county league play... Paul Grover, the little lefthander, pitched himself a ball game when he shut out Fullerton's Midget A's—one of Southern California's best kid baseball teams... Players like Frank Doretti, a star backstop... Kenny Harker... LaVerne Weaver... Allen Moody may develop into a Bobby Adams... a Corale Huarle... a Joe Mene... or a Skeets Gregg... What's more, the little fellows are Anaheim ambassadors of good will wherever they play ball Merk stresses hard, clean baseball and the spirit of true sportsmanship. HELP WANTED — Santa Ana wants a Civilian Defense coordinator at $350 a month. OIL—The Iranian oil crisis apparently has something to do with the renewed wildeat drilling in and around Anaheim... John Steel says the lease speculators are speculating in the Buena Park area again... Dick Pettigrew, an oilman from way back, says the low gravity oil produced by Anaheim's oil well is very much in demand. It is a base for jet fuel. NOTES—Doc Verner Rich tells us that the Orange County Coin club will have "some beautiful stuff" on display at the Orange County fair... No matter how valuable a collection may be, the Anaheim Model Railroad ass'n probably will take the honors as far as the boys—from six to sixty—are concerned... Dick Klisus, the sparky, is doing a good job as a sparetime magazine writer... Abdalla Anton, the good-natured northend grocer, is really an Anaheim booster. NITECAPSULE—The more you do for some folks, the more they expect. The Indian population of the State of Oklahoma in 1940 was 69,135.
