Rev. Butterworth to Address Union Church Service at Christian Church
"Are These Our Casualties?" will be the sermon topic of the Rev. Frank Butterworth, who will be the preacher at the Union Service this Sunday evening at 8 p.m., at the Christian church, Broadway and Helena sts.
The service will begin with a congregational hymn period led by Warren Ashleigh. The Rev. C. I. Andrews will preside. Special music will be presented by the Evangelical United Brethren church choir, under the direction of Betty Reese and accompanied by organist Miss Shirley Pannier.
An Anthem by the choir, "Rejoice the Lord is King," by Darwall 148th and a solo by Donna Lee Flynn, "Oh Divine Redeemer," by Gounod, will be presented.
The Rev. Butterworth was born in the Los Angeles area and after high school education, he went to UCLA and received his Master's Degree in economics. His decision to major in this subject was motivated by a desire to be of service to humanity. To implement represented by leaders and officers in their own districts.
The summer Union Services have been well attended which fact is quite gratifying to the sponsor, the Church Association of Anaheim. The following Sunday, the Rev. Phil Selfridge will be the preacher and will present a male quartet and Margaret Spencer Besler, soloist.
Savanna-Stanton Schools to Open In Old Buildings
The Savanna and Stanton elementary schools will open Sept. 10 in the old buildings. Both school buildings are in the same condition as when closed.
Teachers will instruct the same grades with the exception of vice principal Donald Ralston who taught the eighth grade at Savanna. He has accepted the position of principal at the new Thomas Jefferson elementary school in Anaheim.
According to Wayne L. Butterbaugh, superintendent of the Savanna School District, the new Savanna school, being built at a cost of $462,428 on E. Cerritos, to house all the Stanton and Savanna areas, will be ready for occupancy sometime between Nov. 1 and Dec. 1. Unforeseen building problems have caused the delay otherwise the school would have been ready in September. Paul Williams, vice principal of the Stanton school, will be vice representative by leaders and officers in their own districts.
Nautical Voyage To Feature Vacation Bible School
Ahoy Shipmates! Welcome aboard the Good Ship Calvary! This greeting will go forth each morning at 9 a.m., for two weeks at the Stanton Community church Vacation Bible school.
The theme of this year's school will be "The Pearl of Great Price." The church will be converted into a ship for the daily voyages of the rich pearl beds for the dive (teachers) will descend into the cold ocean waters and bring surface precious gems for the passengers aboard the ship.
The voyages begin Monday Aug. 6 and the ship will wee anchor every morning except Saturdays and Sundays. The ship will be de-commissioned Friday...
REV. FRANK BUTTERWORTH
his knowledge on this subject he worked with Bullocks in Los Angeles, who were large importers and this gave him a direct contact with foreign trade. During 1935-38, he conducted tours to the Orient, Australia and New Zealand, which offered further educational values in his chosen field of business. However it was on this trip that he observed the work of missionaries and it was then that he realized that he could serve people more effectively under the banner of the church.
In San Bernardino and Pomona, he directed youth work before going to Seminary at Garrett-Biblical Institute at Evanston, Illinois. He served his first church at San Gabriel and then went to University church at Redlands. While at Redlands, he was director of Methodist student work on the campus and he served one year as professor of New Testament at the university. In Southern California-Arizona Conference, he now serves as chairman of youth division of board of education.
Mr. Butterworth came to White Temple Methodist church in September 1949. He immediately became active in inter-church affairs in Anaheim and has served as chairman of Worship committee. He has been a member of Kiwanis for 10 years, and affiliated with the local club on his arrival here. Park Meeting Enjoyed by Board
Members of the executive board of Mariner's club of the First Presbyterian church met at the City park last Friday night for their regular monthly meeting. A fried chicken dinner and pot luck was served by the co-host and hostess, Willis and Anita Hollowell and Bill and Gwyneth Newsom.
Following the dinner, Skipper Susan Talevich presided at the business meeting. Reports were made about the July Mariner meeting. The picnic and baseball game at La Palma park was enjoyed by 34 members and 12 guests. Chefs for the picnic were Forrest and Midge Simonton.
Plans were made to hold the second summer meeting and picnic at Santiago park in Santa Ana, Aug. 15.
Those present, in addition to the hosts, were Skipper Susan Talevich, Rev. Howard and Clarabell Condgon, Chas. and Edna Holiday, Harold and Ruth Hall, Windor and Mildred Seapy, Harold and Mollie Botts, Jim and Wanda Morris, Forrest and Midge Simonton, Ben and Faye Switzler, Bill and Etola Sparks and Andy and Miriam Krumanzker.
Rev. Robert Kevorkian of the First Baptist church will speak on "Is God Love?" for his 11 a.m., service Sunday. At 7 p.m., his subject topic will be "Camp Echoes."
Mr. and Mrs. Richard Melrose left Wednesday for Washington, D.C.
The voyages begin Monday Aug. 6 and the ship will wee anchor every morning except Saturday and Sundays. The ship will be de-compissioned Friday Aug. 17, 7:30 p.m., at a great outdoor service. The entire community is invited to attend the closing feature which will be demonstration of what the children have learned. Prizes will be awarded and a famous picture will be shown, "Voice of the Deep."
All children four years old up are invited to come aboard the daily excursions. An actual excursion of Balboa Harbor will be awarded all boys and girls who are in attendance nine days. Other prizes will be given for various contests.
The skipper of the ship will Rev. Charles White, pastor. Mr. Ralph Vipond will be first-master. The divers (teachers) will Mmes. Pat Lovett, Virgi Choice, Fern White, Rus Stouder, Frances Yater, Fern Pond, Blanche Moolick and Owen Jennings.
Crew members (helpers) will June Muraoka, Vida Mae Williams, Charles Sowers, Carol Pagett, Jane Gautschy, Delores Aling, Ann Karraker and Mrs. Verne Koss.
Special features will include object lessons by Miss Irene Huerter and Rev. Richard Cantre movies and flannelgraph lesson.
Wesley Methodist Sermon Topic Give
Wm. McKinley Walker, minister of the Wesley Methodist church, will present a sermon titled "Bridgebuilders" at a regular Sunday service. The chaplain under the direction of Margaret Elliott will sing Hermon V Berge's beautiful anthem, "Merciful to Me." This is a devotion expressive anthem introduced the tune "Mercy" by Gottschalk.

**Episcopal Church To Host Guest Minister Sunday**
Beginning this Sunday, Aug. 5th, and through the month of August the 8 a.m. Holy Communion and the 10:30 a.m. prayer service (Communion first Sunday of the month) will be under the direction of the Rev. Thorold Eler of Iong Beach.
His sermon topic at 10:30 for this Sunday is "The Pharisee and the Publican." The Lay reader will be Joe Thompson and the solo will be sung by Miss Juanita Ross, "My Faith in Thee," by Griggs.

**Cat Rejoins Family In New Home After 3000 Mile Journey**
SAN GABRIEL (P)-When Mrs. Charles D. Smith leaves for California in 1949, they gave their cat "Tom" to the man who bought their home, in St.' Peterburg, Fla.
Two weeks later, Hanson wrote that Tom had run away, and he was the last the Smiths heard about their cat—until last night.
"Charlie, there's a big creewing in our yard," Mr. Smith told her husband. "I wish you'd go out and chase him away."
Instead of running, however, the cat leaped into Smith's arrr and began to purr. "Hey, Betty Smith shouted." "This is old Tom."
No doubt about it, Mrs. Smith said. She couldn't explain how the Florida-born cat found way to California.
Old Tom was skinny and woody and so tired from his 3000-mile walk that he collapsed on the kitchen floor. But he was happy "And we're happy to see him too," Mrs. Smith confided.

Mr. and Mrs. Duane A. Bever of 8191 Bever pl., Hyhes Estates recently visited relatives in Sacramento. They brought back five year old Marsha Jean Duval, Mrs. Bever's brother's daughter, to stay for the summer.
Mrs. G. O. Payne has sold her home at 201 E. Broadway to Mrs. Charles Cleveland of W. Broadway and will spend some time at Laguna Beach with her son, Jack Payne, who is in business at Escondido, before settling down.
Mr. and Mrs. Duncan Powers and daughter, Margie, and Mrs. Fred Backs are spending the month at Balboa Island. Miss Winifred Melrose will leave for Balboa next week to be with them.
La Habra Home Setting for Topperettes Meet
Topperettes club met Tuesday evening in the new home of Katherine Heitzman of La Habra with Betty McMillan and Lorraine Whitney assisting.
Prizes were won by Jean Chamberlain, Thelma Woods and Milfred Whitaker.

Executive board of the Anaheim Business and Professional Women met at the home of Buelah Hineman in Fullerton Wednesday evening, to plan the fall sessions.
The next regular meeting will be held August 22 on the patio off the Verna Hopkins home. Reservations were taken for the Orange County Council meeting August 17, to be held at Laguna Beach hotel.
A joint meeting of the Anaheim and Fullerton clubs will be held in Anaheim City park Sept. 4. The next board meeting will be held Sept. 5 at the home of Norma Nipper.

Stricken Suddenly
Rev. Thomas Walter Bascom
Demaree, 87, a native of Kentucky
and a resident of Anaheim for
seven years, died unexpectedly last night at his home, 1014 W. Sycamore.
He leaves his wife, Gania; three
sons, Paul H., of Anaheim; Dr.
Eugene W., of Pasadena and Kenneth B., of N.Y.; one daughter,
Mrs. Melvin Barlow of W. Los
Angeles; 11 grandchildren and six
great grandchildren. He was a member of the White Temple Methodist church.
A graduate of Kentucky Wesley college and Vanderbilt university, he served as a missionary in Japan for 45 years.
Funeral services will be announced later by Hilgenfeld Mortuary.
High School Pupil Gets Tax Refund For $508,666.26
WASHINGTON (P) — Jay Blesser, 18-year-old Rockville, Md., high school student, asked the government for a tax refund of $21.88. He got a government check for $508,666.26!
Calling yesterday to find out what it was all about, Blesser was told it was all a big mistake. A Treasury Department spokesman said a check-writing machine operator probably punched the serial number instead of the correct amount.

LOMITA, Calif. (P)—They met two years ago in a bar, so Clarence Van Volkinburgh and Mrs. Venell Kelley decided to be married there.
Municipal Judge E. L. Morris of Gardena read the vows yesterday and a joke box gave out with the wedding march. The best man was the owner of the bar and the maid of honor was a waitress.
The bride is 61, her husband 58. She's a great-grandmother and Van Volkinburgh is a grandfather.
They had a reception for guests—in the bar.
