8 Anaheim Gazette THURSDAY, AUGUST 8, 1951 ANAHEIM, CALIFORNIA MODEST MAIDENS Trademark Registered U.S. Patent Office "GOSH, I WISH THAT WAS A FULL MOON SO WE COULD SEEID EXPLAIN THIS TYPE OF ROCK FORMATION TO YOU!" last year... Nine of the 60 fatalities so far this year were pedestrians; there were eight head-on and three death-dealing rear-end Anaheim Gazetteer by JOHN S. NEUBAUER ... Rejoice and be exceedingly glad for great is your reward in heaven.—Matt. 5:12. CALIFORNIANA—Don Gaspar de Portola camped on the present site of Los Angeles on August 2, 1769. Father Jasn Crespi noted in his diary that the site "has all the requisites for a large settlement." And so it has come to pass, that the world's largest "settlement" has been built on that site where that small group camped 182 years ago. WHO'S NEWS—Fred Edwards, Jr., the young man who is studying for the ministry, is to be congratulated. It is a noble work which requires courage and determination. Johann Raeder-scheldt's recent visit to Anaheim shows a definite journalistic trend toward American newspapering. European newspapers are actually viewspapers. Don Hudson, the 18-year-old C.I.F. fullback, received minor injuries when he was thrown from the car in which he was riding. Elizabeth Dickerson, superintendent of the Cypress schools, has added five new members to her staff to replace an equal number leaving for other endeavors. Like Lakewood, so are Garden Grove and Buena Park considering incorporation. DEATH—California traffic accidents killed 3,054 persons last year, in 65,506 accidents involving death or injury according to Highway patrol figures. Drivers who had been drinking were involved in 12,711 accidents taking last year. Nine of the 60 fatalities so far this year were pedestrians; there were eight head-on and three death-dealing rear-end crashes; ten deaths were caused by vehicle running off the road, out of control; while 14 died in broadside intersection crashes. And remember, half of these accidents were between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. VIGNETTE — Frank Hibbs, you'll remember, was the officer who shot the Bull in Buena Park about a year or so ago when the maddened animal broke loose and roamed the western end of the county endangering life and property. Bob Ogle, a former baseball player who is now a member of the Fullerton police force tried to lasso it and was almost gored trying to play torcedor. When they kidded Hibbs about shooting the bull which actually was a cow, he made the classic remark: "I didn't have time to check the udder end." Well, Hibbs quit the police force and went to work in San Bernardino where last week a couple of young fellows dropped into his gas station. One of the callow youths stuck a 38 in his ample mid-section and ordered: "Hand over the cash!" "Y'know," Hibbs said quietly as he reached into his pocket and pulled out 50 dollars in bills, "I could lick both of you guys if you didn't have that gun!" "Yeah," one sneered as he grabbed the money, "but we've got the gun!" He counted the money. "Dis all t'dough y'got in a big joint like this. Fork over! Quit stallin' mister, or we'll letcha have it." Hibbs reached into his other pocket and handed over a fistful of change. The youthful holdup man was angered, he cocked the hammer back. "Aw right wise guy, y'asked for it!" DEATH—California traffic accidents killed 3,054 persons last year, in 65,506 accidents involving death or injury according to Highway patrol figures. "Drivers who had been drinking" were involved in 12,711 accidents taking the lives of 593 and injuring 20,909. Remember 89 persons died as Orange County traffic fatalities.
