Culinary and Needlework Skills
To be Featured at County Fair
Housewives of the county will be displaying their culinary skill and needle handiwork while competing for premium awards in the huge home economics exhibit department at the 1951 Orange County Fair, Aug. 15-19.
Louise Thomas of Newport Beach, supervisor of this department and Mrs. Earl K. Burdick of Garden Grove, honorary chairman, report enthusiasm and cooperation on the part of exhibitors throughout the county and urge that all those planning displays file entry before the closing date of Aug. 1.
The canned and preserved foods division will contain displays of bottled juices, canned fruits, meats and vegetables, pickles and relishes, jams, jellies, preserves, marmalades and butters. In this division, a special bonus prize for canned fruits, jellies and preserves is being offered by the California & Hawaiian Sugar Refining Corporation for items canned with their product.
The baked goods and confections division has 28 exhibit sections, including a special contest for Betty Crocker Chiffon cakes.
The Holly Sugar Corporation of Santa Ana is offering seven special awards in the Home Economics' senior department and six special awards in the 4-H club junior department for entries made with Holly Sugar.
The clothing and textiles division will include bedroom and dining room furnishings, dining room linen, child and infant apparel, nursery accessories and 17 other sections of wearing apparel.
The table setting division, next year, is attracting wide interest. The division will include table setting for a children's party and table setting displays for formal dinner.
Majorettes Invited to Compete at Fair
Majorettes of Southern California are invited to participate in the 1951 Orange County Fair baton twirling contest scheduled for Thursday, Aug. 16, starting at 1:30 p.m.
Ted Otis of Long Beach, five times national champion and one of the world's greatest battler twirlers, will have charge of the event. New feature will be a special contest for children six years of age and under. All divisions will also be open to boy contenders.
Entry blanks may be secured by writing: Orange County Fair 20391 Newport blvd., Santa Ana Calif.
If you have an electric coffee maker brew a little soda and water in it once in a while, just as you would ordinarily brew coffee; then wash the inside of the coffee maker well. The baking soda solution will help keep the coffee maker free of the flavor of stale coffee.
