Truman Plans

major developments in the controls field:
1. The Wage Stabilization Board extended indefinitely its allowance of cost-of-living wage increases which are tied to the government's price index.
President Truman, predicting the new law will mean bigger prices for manufacturers, wholesalers and retailers, said it will be necessary also to "allow reasonable adjustments in wages."
"We cannot ask the working people of this country to reduce their standards of living just to pay for the better conditions this act provides for business," he said.
2. OPS formally abolished its slaughtering quotas, intended to prevent a flow of meat into black markets, in conformity with the new law.
It also cancelled tow scheduled 40 per cent rollbacks on live cattle prices—which it has said would have cut nine or 10 cents in pound from butcher-shop beef prices. Cattle prices have been rolled back as far as the new law allows for farm products.
3. OPS clamped ceilings on prices of goods exported from the U.S., to conserve home supplies and help the nation's allies combat inflation. Exporters may not add more than the pre-Korca percentage mark-up to current domestic prices.
4. The Office of Housing Experiences heard from again. The jurors asked for further instructions on the question of holding the child in the cabin. McCracken had testified that while Patty Hull was in his cabin, he locked the door and placed the key on a shelf.
It was believed that the jury may have wanted the instructions in connection with the kidnapping charge. Judge Robert Gardner read the code section relating to the crime of kidnapping. The jury then retired to the jury room and remained until Judge Gardner dismissed them for the night, ordering them held together in a Santa Ana hotel.
editor (OHE), now armed with stronger rent control powers, disappeared as such. Mr. Truman ordered its main portions transferred to Eric Johnston's economic stabilization agency.
Reborn as the "office of rent stabilization," OHE will function under ESA as an office parallel to OPS and the wage board. There was no sign Mr. Truman would displace its head, Tighe Woods.
5. OPS poured out a dozen additional price orders, many containing rollbacks but having small impact on living costs. They affected such materials, as rubber products, reclaimed rubber, brass and copper scrap, lubricating oils and greases.
Albacore Dinner To Highlight Meeting of Ikes
An albacore dinner (with all you can eat for 75 cents) will highlight a meeting of the Anaheim chapter of the Isaac Walton league to be held tomorrow night at 6:30 at the Ike's clubhouse, 317 E. La Palma.
Entertainment will be movies of the last Huck Finn day, two Tony Accetta fishing pictures; and films of the Holy Jim creek dams.

Blacktop Paving To be Replaced By Beach Sand

County Escrow Holds Beach Meet
The monthly dinner meeting of the Orange County Escrow Association was held on Wednesday evening at the Balboa Bay club, with Forrest F. Fowler, secretary of the Anaheim Building and Loan Association in charge of the meeting.

By Beach Sand
Acting to prevent playground accidents similar to those which caused the recent upheaval in Los Angeles, Anaheim officials have begun replacing blacktop paving under play and swing areas in City Park with beach sand.
City Administrator Keith Murdoch said, "We were definitely alarmed by the Los Angeles playground tragedy and decided to prevent anything of a like nature here, as far as possible. Of course, a child is more apt to jump from a swing because he knows the sand he'll land in is soft, and he might get hurt that way, but we realize that no matter what is done, some risk is inevitable."
Blacktop is being replaced only in City park at present." Play areas in La Palma park are carpeted with grass and will not be changed until or unless the grass is worn down to bare dirt, according to Murdoch.
Butch’Ko Pottery Buys Valencia Packing House
Butch’Ko Pottery Manufacturing company of Pomona has purchased the Orange county Valencia association building at 701 E. Cypress.
Purchased at a sale price of $60,000, the former citrus packing plant contains 31,000 square feet of floor space and is located on property 159 by 420 feet. The plant was formally operated by the Orange county Valencia association until operations were discontinued last year.
The sale was handled by Jack Thompson of the Real Estate firm of Jackson and Thompson, 130 S. Los Angeles st.
Employing between 50 and 75 persons, the new plant will begin operations in September. Two new kilns, each costing $10,000, will shortly be installed.

agement conference. From there the Schoepes went to Munich and Schaffhausen, Switzerland, to check progress being made on manufacture of special machinery for the Kwikset plant. He reported little luck finding scarce supplies of steel, zinc, and copper.
Mr. and Mrs. Schoepe also visited his mother and members of his family near Cologne, Germany. They traveled across Europe in a small European car purchased abroad.
"Everywhere signs of the war's destruction still remain," he pointed out, and "piles of rubble are everywhere in the larger cities, despite some newer buildings."
The whirlwind European tour convinced him, he said, that there is indeed "no place like home." "The best part of the trip," he concluded, was the ride from Los Angeles airport to his home.

Cave Man Explains Assault...‘She’s a Woman...I’m a Man’
“She is a woman, and I am a man.”
Thats' the simple answer Gregorio Baez Ramirez, 19, gave police today after being arrested for assault and battery after he had met, seized and kissed Valia Campos Soto, then slammed her over the head with a camera because she struggled.
They met in the 700 block on East Fourth st., Santa Ana. She recognized him as the man who had been molesting her for the past two weeks, she said. He did it again this time, only worse. He grabbed her, kissed her, then held his hand over her mouth to stifle her screams. “I've wanted you for a long time and now I'm going to have you,” she said he told her.
She finally broke away and took a clout on the head with a box camera, she said. Ramirez strolled to his hotel. She called police.

he prosecuted cases involving some of the defendants.
The lawyer also said that in public speeches and remarks, Judge Carter had declared he would like to “wipe out” the communist party on the west coast. The judge, however, said he didn’t believe that his expressed opposition to communism disqualified him and, further, that he holds no animosity or personal feeling against any of the defendants. He said he would hear the arraignment phase, at least, although the case might later be set for trial before some other judge.
Margolis switched tactics then and said he did not wish to enter a formal motion for reduction of bail at this time. Judge Carter continued the arraignment and plea to Aug. 13.
By that time both sides will know whether the eight defendants in San Francisco and New York have been removed here or are resisting removal. By that time also Margolis said he will have pre-pared various motions in the case.
