Multi-Blessed Event Shower at Calvary Baptist Church Tuesday
When Hulda Miller, as general chairman, planned to entertain nine expectant mothers of Calvary Baptist church, she planned a clever shower honoring all of the young matrons at one time.
Approximately 50 women gathered at the beautifully decorated church social hall for the affair which fetched Mrs. Robert Bowers, Mrs. George Butler, Mrs. Robert Fox, Mrs. Bonnie Gedney, Mrs. Callie Johnson, Mrs. Melvin Killingbeck, Mrs. Helen St. Clair, Mrs. Earl Williams and Mrs. Greg Beale. Mrs. Beale, unable to attend, was represented by her mother, Mrs. Davis.
Chairs decorated in pink and blue crepe paper were set apart for the honored guests with baskets of matching flowers arranged throughout the hall. A tea table set with silver service and bouquets of pink carnations and blue cornflowers centered the room.
Gifts were wrapped in baby paper with a rattle attached to each identical package. Prizes were awarded to Mrs. Davis and Mrs. Mike Porter.
Miss Carol Jane Rutledge sang "The Love of God" and Mrs. Bernice Athy presented each honoree with a clever corsage of baby pants and safety pins. Gift presentation was made by Mrs. Kevorkian.
Assisting the chairman were Peggy Hoag, Elsie Myers, Frances Davis, Faye Arnold, Phyllis Clow, Bernice Athy, Dorothy Burns and Mrs. Kevorkian.
Marquita Dixon Has Birthday Party
Miss Marquita Dixon was feted last Friday evening on the occasion of her 17th birthday. Her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Dixon, invited seven of her girl friends over for a hamburger fry in the patio of their home.
Attending the get-together were: Ana Lou Daly, Madelyn Dunnegan, Helen Weir, Diane Cash, Carlene Korn, Gwen Keithly, all of Anaheim; Glenn Sue Bryant of Covina and honoree, Marquita Dixon.
Symphony Band To Play at Idyllwild Concert
A program of special interest to all will be presented at the Atwater Kent Bowl at Idyllwild next Sunday, July 29, at five o'clock. The Pomona Community Symphonic Band of 50 pieces under the direction of Stanton Selby will play a varied program of works for wind instruments.
In addition to the numbers for band the program will feature several outstanding soloists who will present solos and ensemble numbers.
There will be no admission charge for the concert but a free-will offering will be received for the 1952 scholarship fund for the Idyllwild Summer High School Chorus. Ten scholarships have already been raised from the concerts in the Atwater Kent Bowl this season for the 1952 chorus, and it is expected that the goal of 15 will be reached before the series of concerts closes August 12th.

July's best buys in foods include the dairy products, milk, cream, cheese and eggs and high on the list also are fish, frying chicken, bacon, picnic hams, cold cuts and the variety meats such as liver, kidney and heart. So says the U.S. Department of Agriculture which bases this choice on seasonal availability.
These trends which make for economical good eating are apparent right here in Anaheim. One has only to look at the advertised food specials of our leading markets to be assured. Safeway guarantees the flavor perfect frying chickens that are frosted to insure freshness. Meaty pieces of the golden brown fried bird makes a sumptuous meal hot at dinner or cold for a picnic lunch.
You will find Safeway's beef shelf—solid pack tuna for hearty salads, pork and beans in tomato sauce for the protein part of lunch, a variety of canned soup for "something hot," packaged gelatin and puddings so easy to prepare.
Canned meats and meat spreads are very handy to have also. In place of the ever popular hamburger, Alpha Beta offers canned corned beef which can be chopped and formed into patties.
CORNED BEEF PATTIES
1 12 oz. can corned beef
1 No. 2 can whole kernel corn
1 egg
½ cup dry bread crumbs
1 teaspoon dry mustard
Few drops Worcestershire sauce
2 tablespoons cooking fat
Chop the corned beef fairly finely and add drained corn, lightly beaten egg, crumbs and seasoning. Shape into patties and fry until brown on both sides. Serve with tomato sauce or catsup. Make eight medium sized patties.
COLD COOKERY
It is a good investment to transfer frozen delicacies from the grocery store frozen food bank to one in your own home. Deep freezers have become standard equipment in many homes, and kitchenets today are without so provision for storing some frozen foods. Safeway's chicken pies have only to be popped into the oven a little while before meal time thaw and to brown. Frozen tash and frozen French fries are the handy packaged accompaniments.
Your refrigerator will cook you in an amazing number of ways which range all the way from well chilled first course, through the main dish, jellied or frozen saladds, breads, and frozen desserts. The trick is to keep the freezer full and to make it work for you.
FROZEN FRUIT SALADS
1 No. 2 can pineapple
1 No. 2½ can white cherries
1 No. 2½ can apricots
1 tablespoon butter or oleo
1 tablespoon flour
1 tablespoon sugar
1 tablespoon lemon juice
1 egg
Drain the pineapple, reserve the juice and cut the fruit

You will find Safeway's beef liver to be excellent and easy on the pocketbook. Extra delicious when teamed with crisp bacon or fried onions.
Good old bacon and eggs makes a fine summer main dish at any meal of the day. Alpha Beta is featuring these twins along with the biggest selection of cheese in town, and these items are going like hot cakes.
FARM FRESH
The warm weather plays havoc with fresh fruits and vegetables when they are not handled just right. Wilted produce has impaired flavor and the vitamin loss is tremendous. To be just right the quality must be high in the first place, and it must receive expert handling from farm to table. You will find only the very best produce at Alpha Beta markets and it is kept farm fresh. Treat it right when you get it home and prepare for a heap of good eating.
Elberta freestone peaches are here at last and those big Klondike watermelons that are so famous for flavor. The new crop of Astrachan apples are dandy for all purpose cooking, and vine ripened cantaloupes, bell peppers and Utah type celery are not to be slighted.
QUICK AND EASY
During this lovely weather, the less time spent in the kitchen, the better. Whether you want a cake, pie, cookies or some other dessert delicacy, you will find just what you want at Hadley's bakery. No fuss, no bother, and no dishes to do! Hadley's takes pride in the use of only the finest ingredients and each and every pastry is dependably oven fresh.
With the dessert question solved, we can work backwards to other quick meal alds. How about this line up for the pantry

Art Aragon in Decision Over John Gonsalves
LOS ANGELES (UP)—Art Aragon of Los Angeles and Oakland's Johnny Gonsalves gave Olympic auditorium fight fans plenty to cheer about last night as Aragon alarmed his way to a split decision in 10 rounds. Aragon weighed 139¼ and Gonsalves 137¼.
The Los Angeles lightweight built up an early lead and in the fifth had Gonsalves on the ropes for a three count while 9000 fans yelled themselves hoarse. It looked as though Gonsalves wouldn't weather the bombardment as Aragon punched his head and body. Referee Mushy Callahan waved Aragon to a neutral corner and began his count.
The plucky Gonsalves came back fighting. He was carrying the attack to Aragon as the fifth ended and more than held his own the rest of the way. Judge Joe Stone gave Gonsalves the fight by one point, but referee Callahan gave pieces. Pit the cherries. Cut apricots in pieces. In a double boiler, melt the fat and stir in the flour. Next stir in the pineapple juice, sugar, lemon juice and the slightly beaten egg. When smooth, set aside to cool. Fold in one cup cream, whipped, and the drained fruit. Chill until firm and serve on a bed of lettuce.
USC Still Winning.
BERLIN (UP)—The all-victorious touring American track and field team moved on to Vienna today after winning its fourth straight track meet against German athletes six events to four.
American victories and performances included 110-meter hurdles, Dick Attlesey, Southern California; 15.2; shot put, Parry O'Brien, Southern California, 53 ft. 7 in.; and pole vault, Walter Jensen, Southern California, 13 ft. 10 in.
PSYCHOLOGICAL ILLESS
SINGAPORE (UP)—A local man perspired and turned purple. Then he became sick with fear and left his place of business.
Back home he called a doctor. But first he took a bath. He sighed with relief when the purple was washed away by the shower. The purple man reconstructed his day's activities in search of an explanation. It came: in a chemist's shop a fan had blown dust in his face. The dust had been gentian violet powder. The heat of the day did the rest.
The U.S.S.R. is an extensive fur producer and its rivers and seas are abundantly stocked with all types of fish.
Aragon a three-point edge and Judge Charlie Randolph picked him by six points.
