Arvilla Legg Bounces Coffee By 6-4 Score
Jean Williams defeated Margaret Rodin in the feature girl's singles match played on Wednesday in the round robin tennis tournament being staged on the city park courts, 6-4, after Margaret pulled up from a love five deficit in games to make it a real set.
In the mixed doubles a similar battle was won by Karen Lenain and her partner Merle Meyer after Jean Williams and Barry Ryan bad run up a 5-2 lead and looked certain to take the match which will be one of the important ones when the mixed doubles title is decided.
With the track meet holding the center of attention at the high school there were only three additional matches played during the afternoon. Mary Rasmussen defeated Sharon Rodin 6-4. Arvilla Legg defeated Kay Caffee 8-4, and Don Lee defeated Ronnie Swank in a love set.
Any matches not yet completed on the singles cards must be finished by the close of Saturday morning's tennis classes in order to count in the awarding of ribbons and for the setting up of the singles ladders.

Joe Walcott Knows
PITTSBURGH (UP)—Jersey Joe Walcott, an amazing old man of the ring who wouldn't be licked, today held the world's heavyweight championship in an astounding climax to an almost unbelievable saga of the ring.
Today plans were in motion for a September return meeting between the brown Cinderella man and the beaten champion, Ezzard Charles, either in Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, Atlantic City, or New York, Pittsburgh, with a record turnout of 28,272 for first heavyweight title show Forbes Field, looked the like winner of the fist plum.
At 37, Jersey Joe last night became the oldest man ever to win boxing's most prized bauble when he flattened the superbly conditioned Charles in 55 seconds of the seventh round of their round bout. A left hook to the jacket Charles to the canvas.

"It puts Joe back at least six months in his plans to regain the title," said Miles after he had talked to the Louis camp at Belle River, Ontario. Joe is training there for his Aug. 1 fight with Oscar Brion in San Francisco.

NEW YORK (P)—An "upset in tennis used to be when the M 2 player accidentally beat the N 1 man. Form was so accurate that it wasn't a question of whether win, but how. Now what happens... Dick Savitt, the lad who stepped out of collage and obscurity into the top flight last summer, won the Australia and Wimbledon titles. On one of that young Tony Frabert knocked off national champion A Larsen in the clay courts first and Vic Seixas trimmed vets and Gar Mulloy and Bill Tulberry in successive matches at Spring Lake. It's understandable once you've seen it happen because all three were recogniz as very promising players whose development was delayed by requirements of education.

It was the ancient Camden battler's fifth crack at the championship—two more chances than any other challenger ever got at the heavyweight crown!
"I'm thankful to everyone," said Walcott who had twice seen the crown slip out of his eager fingers. "I'm going to be a fighting champion—and Charles will get his chance."
"I got him with a left hook to the jaw," said Joe with a big grin on his face. Only moments before tears coursed down his cheeks as he realized his glorious moment of triumph.
"I just got hit," said the crest-fallen Charles in the stillness of a loser's dressing room.
"Did I hear the count? I heard five—I guess," said Charles, who had a lump under his right eye and a cut on his lower lip that required two stitches.
"I don't know what it was to-night but he seemed more aggre-sive than ever. He was taking chances with haymaker punch and leaving himself wide open I couldn't seem to do anything about it. I guess I was waiting later when he would tire out."
"I could have gone on and o-write Walcott. I kept banging h-e to the body early in the fight, bring his guard down. We planned that all along. Then I w-to throw my right to make h-e"

A much shuttled and shunted part-time flychaser and pinch hitter through seven discouraging big league seasons, the 29-year-old Ohioan has finally established himself as one of the best clutch hitters in baseball.
Vollmer, more than any other Red Socker, is responsible for Boston's spectacular climb to the top of the American league. Climaxing a brilliant two-week batting splurge, the strapping outfielder last night led the Red Sox to a 4-3 victory over the Cleveland Indians.
The victory gave the Red Sox a full game lead over Chicago's second place White Sox and increased their margin to a game and a half over the New York Yankees. Cleveland remains in fourth place two and a half games off the pace.

Sad Sack Strikes Out Six, Homers; But Beaten by LA
(By The Associated Press)
The Hollywood Stars are three games in arrears today as they invade Seattle for the series that may put the finger on the Pacific Coast league pennant winner of 1951.
The Seattle-Hollywood embroilment—five games calculated to give somebody a decided pain in the averages—has been building up all week in portent and interest. Sick's stadium, which generally draws a good crowd when the Rainiers play at home, anticipates a season record turnout.
The Stars, who fell another notch off the pace last night by losing a 1-0 heartbreaker to Portland, will lead off with their hard luck southpaw, little Vic Lombardi (7-8). The Rainiers, who increased their lead by beating San Francisco, 7-6, in 10 innings, will counter with veteran left hander Earl Johnson (3-0).
Alex Garbowski's blooper double in the bottom of the 10th supplied the Rainiers with their triumph over San Francisco. The Seals knotted the count at 6-all in the ninth on Joe Grace's pinch hit homer.
At Portland, big Ben Wade of the Stars and old Red Lynn of the Beavers hooked up in a fierce duel. Each gave up only four hits, but one of the blows off Wade was an eighth inning homer by Eddie Barr for the only tally.
At Los Angeles, Leon Brinkopf sired the game winning homer as
SEA WITCH
WINS RACE
HONOLULU (AP)—The ketch Sea Witch, owned by A. L. McCormick of San Francisco, won the Los Angeles-Honolulu yacht race in handicap record time.
The 36-foot ketch flashed past diamond head beacon at 11:56 p.m. last night (4:56 a.m. Thursday EST) for a new handicap record of eight days, 12 hours and one second for the 2,225-mile crossing.
The Sea Witch actually placed 21st in order of arrivals and spent 14 days, 14 hours, 48 minutes and 56 seconds on the way. But deducted from that time was her handicap of six days, two hours, 46 minutes, 55 seconds.
Over San Francisco.
At Los Angeles, Leon Brinkopf sired the game winning homer as the Angels edged last place San Diego 7-5. Brinkopf delivered his master stroke with two away in the bottom of the ninth and a mate on base.
Sacramento and Oakland were idle last night, but resume action tonight in a full schedule.
