HISTORY—Last week when the big oil tank fire provided a thrill for TV viewers and another epic in the history of the Union Oil Company of California. Five 80,000-barrel tanks containing gasoline were destroyed at the tank farm at 1800 W. Anaheim at in Wilmington. Anahlm's horde of defense plant workers during the last war are well familiar with the location of the refinery as three of the major shipbuilding yards were located almost directly below it. The $2,000,000 fire was confined to a comparatively small area and at the height of the conflagration only 11 of the farm's 57 giant tanks were in immediate danger. There are also 147 smaller ones. REMEMBER—On April 7, 1926, a storm swept from the Pacific with a dazzling display of lightning flashes and cannon cracks. At 7:53 a.m., three 1,000,000 barrel reservoirs were ignited simultaneously by a bolt of lightning at San Luis Obispo. Fifteen minutes later another reservoir was hit. After burning out of control for 17 hours, the emulsified oil in the four reservoirs boiled over, igniting a fifth and a row of steel tanks. CATASTROPHE—While all of this was going on in San Luis Obispo, the storm moved south and east and a day later on April 8, 1926, at 9 a.m. a lightning bolt ignited two of the Stewart tank farm's giant reservoirs. These boiled over, igniting a third and engulfed a small refinery in a lake of boiling oil. An army of 3,000 men recruited from all of Southern California's oil fields moved in erecting dykes and checked the lake of fire. At the height of the spectacular oil fire, a terrific whirlwind struck the area and fanned the flames. The wind, generated by the heat, hampered firefighting operations. The inferno lasted for several days and attracted greater crowds than the Pasadena Tournament of Roses. All roads leading to Brea were lined with cars two abreast, bumper to bumper. Only those having business within the area were allowed within a mile and a half of the conflagration. Through an elaborate system of pipelines oil was transported from the far flung southern California fields to the Wilmington refinery, where, ironically enough, a similar fire—of a different origination—almost obliterated it.
