Roy Merk New Staff Member At Corona Hi
Two former Fullerton junior college athletes will be working with each other this coming school year in nearby Corona high school.
H. L. Looney who joined the coaching staff there last year will take over the 1951 season as head football and track coach. The new member of the small staff is Anaheim's youth leader, Roy Merk.
Merk will assume the duties of coaching Bee football, varsity basketball and varsity baseball. Last season Merk was head gridiron coach at Coast Union high school in Cambria, near San Jose.
Merk and Looney graduated from FJC in 1948 after playing on the same football squad. Looney was a quarterback while Merk was a standout at his end position. Looney went on to Whittier college and played ball while Anaheim will tangle with George Caster's Long Beach Lakewood American Logion team Saturday in a 2, p.m. game at La Palma Park. Caster's team is largely composed of athletes from Long Beach Jordan High School. Jordan's team powered over Anaheim's team early in the high school season by scores of 14-4 and 13-0. The Jordan squad out hit the Colonist nine in the first game 11-8 and the second 11-1.
Caster was a top notch major leaguer as a pitcher. He was born in Colton, California in August of 1909 and in 1934 at the age of 25 joined the Philadelphia Athletics. The team didn't go anywhere and neither did George as he won only one and lost four.

Tomorrow afternoon two local teams donand go into battle—Fullerton in the county play side and Anaheim in an exhibition at La Palm games are at 2 p.m.
Fullerton, after capturing their fifth straight county title, goes into the district playoffs again county winner, Norco, at Evans Field in Riverside in the first game of the 1951 playoffs.
Both teams travel to Anaheim for the second game Sunday at 1 p.m. If the two teams have won a game, then the third game will also be played Sunday afternoon; however, the second game would be only seven innings. Fullerton has won the district title all five years of entering the competition and should certainly be favored.
Anaheim will tangle with George Caster's Long Beach Lakewood American Logion team Saturday in a 2, p.m. game at La Palma Park. Caster's team is largely composed of athletes from Long Beach Jordan High School. Jordan's team powered over Anaheim's team early in the high school season by scores of 14-4 and 13-0. Tornado Back in Action at OCAC Monday Evening
"Wild Red" Berry, once one of the biggest box-office attractions in this section, returns to the Orange County Athletic club Monday night after an absence of two or three years to take on Gino Garibaldi, leader of the famed Garibaldi team in the main event of a "Ladies' Night" program.
Berry's OCAC matches with Danny McShain, Pierre LaBelle and Ernie Paluso are still "topics" for rabid discussion when fans begin comparing wild and woolly coaching Bee football, varsity basketball and varsity baseball. Last season Merk was head gridiron coach at Coast Union high school in Cambria, near San Jose.
Merk and Looney graduated from FJC in 1948 after playing on the same football squad. Looney was a quarterback while Merk was a standout at his end position. Looney went on to Whittier college and played ball while Merk turned into a studious Poet.
There are about 600 students at Corona High, but the school is in a fast league, the Tri-County League. Other teams in the league are Bonita, Claremont, Citrus, Chino and Puente. Last year the Corona High football team finished in the cellar as Bonita won the title and should show some improvement this next season. Looney plans to use the T-formation while Merk is undecided as to the formation for his Bee team.

Caster Here Tomorrow
The Tigers won the pennant in 1945 and George was on the team, winning five and losing only one. The next five season, 1946 was his last season in the majors. He won two and lost one for the second place Tigers.
Gayle Herbel topped all hitters on the Legion team this past season with a hefty .434 batting average while Pat Roberts trailed with a highly respectable mark of .362. Ed Harker and Dick Ramella had high averages, but were not at bat very many times.
Herbel led the team in banging out the most hits, was second in stolen bases and walks to first base.
Val Wiethorn chucked more innings and faced more batters than the other pitchers, but at the same time, gave up more runs and more free passes to first. Dick Ramella won five games while dropping only one, but that game practically ruined him for the season. Fullerton pounded him for 15 runs, 14 hits, 10 earned runs putting Ramella behind the eight ball for the rest of the season.
He averaged six strike outs per game, four walks and ended up the season with only 17 earned

THE OTHER PITCHERS, but at the same time, gave up more runs and more free passes to first. Dick Hamella won five games while dropping only one, but that game practically ruined him for the season. Fullerton pounded him for 15 runs, 14 hits, 10 earned runs putting Ramella behind the eight ball for the rest of the season.
He averaged six strike outs per game, four walks and ended up the season with only 17 earned runs charged to him. His earned run average was 3.37. Wiethorn had a 2.73 mark while facing a grand total of 224 batters over a stretch of 56 innings.
The Legion will continue playing right to the start of the annual Anaheim American Legion Invitational tournament. This year the tourney starts August 5 and ends August 26.

Tennis Matches in Full Swing; Dunton Knocks Over Legg
Matches in the boy's and girl's round robin singles tennis tournament being played at the city park courts are in full swing as challenges are given and accepted during the regular class periods. Those who have not yet signed up, are urged to do so before the completion of too many matches puts some of the early starters too far in advance of the field.
In matches played on Thursday, Jimmy Dunton defeated George Legg 6-0, but was in turn beaten by Gary Schilling 6-3. Gary Schilling also defeated George Legg, who played his first tennis just a few weeks ago, by a 6-0 score. George was then blanked in a third set by Lee Risner.
In girl's singles George's sister Arvilla, who is also a beginning player lost to Jean Williams by a 6-1 count, and to Carol Ausburn 6-3. Jean also defeated Rita Flynn 6-0. Karen Lenain, who took last summer's singles tournament, opened the defense of her title by winning from Carol Ausburn, 6-0.
Matches scheduled for Saturday morning are as follows—players are urged to be on waiting: 10:00 o'clock: Charlene Allen vs. Carol Ausburn, Cynthia Cox vs. Janice Evans, Rita Flynn vs. Joan Joyce, and Virginia Lee vs. Arvilla Legg.
10:30 o'clock: Karen Lenain vs. Mary Rasmussen, Vicky Schneider vs. Anne Williams.
11:00 o'clock: Don Dawson vs. Jimmy Dunton, Don Kohlenberger vs. John Kohlenberger, Don Lee vs. George Legg, Merle Moer
Hodges Out in Front; Yanks In Short Lead
(By The Associated Press)
Maybe it's time to take this man Gil Hodges seriously.
With 27 home runs in Brooklyn's first 73 games, the Dodger first baseman is running five games ahead of Babe Ruth's all-time record pace of 1927.
Let's take a quick look at the Hodges-Ruth figures, month by month:
Hodges Ruth
April ..... 8
May ..... 9
June ..... 9
July 1-5 ..... 3
27 ..... 26
The Babe didn't hit No. 27 until July 8 in the Yanks' 78th game. Brooklyn won't play its 78th game until after the All-Star game break.
No wonder the Brooks are 7½ games in front of the second place New York Giants and pulling away fast. Their recovery from a mid-summer slump coincided with Hodges' latest burst of homers.
Gil ripped into Larry Jansen for his 27th last night at Ebbets field, a few seconds after Andy Pafko also rifled a Jansen pitch into the stands.
Although the Giants wobbled big Don Newcombe in a four-run eighth inning, the Brooks clawed back with three more and went on to win, 8-4. It was Newcombe's 12th victory, a seven-hitter in which he struck out eight to boost
Nelson Bangs Out 3 Hits in Merk Win
Anaheim won a practice game from Buena Park yesterday at La Palma 12 to 4. Ed Trotter started on the mound for the locals and walked 5, struck out 7 and allowed one hit, Grover finished with three walks, 6 strike outs and 2 hits.
Dennis Nelson was the big stick for Anaheim with a triple and two singles in four trips to the plate. Buena Park 010 110 1 4 3 4 Anaheim 300 351 x 12 10 2
White Temple Explodes for 14 Runs; Bethel Scores 13 Against Zion Luth.
White Temple pounded Grace Lutheran last night in the first game at the City park as they held onto first place in the Church league. Don Rees led the attack with three hits while Leo Oden, Al Alberian, and Keith Herman each got two hits. In the first inning they scored six runs on two walks, an error and singles by Rees, Roger Harlow, Keith Herman and a double by Alberian.
In the third they scored 6 more runs on a walk, an error and single by Dennis Ryan and Alberian, doubles by Don Rees and Leo Oden and a triple by Keith Herman.
Don Mauerhan got three for three for the losers but was of little help.

In the fourth they scored 7 runs on two walks, an error, and singles by Hamilton, Remland and E. Hartmann, doubles by Al Hartmann and Carl Bernaker and Denny's homer.
Dick Henning got a perfect 3 for 3 for the losers.

Although the Giants wobbled big Don Newcombe in a four-run eighth inning, the Brooks-clawed back with three more and went on to win. B-4. It was Newcombe's 12th victory, a seven-hitter in which he struck out eight to boost his major league leading total to 83.
If Hodges and the Dodgers are running away from the National field, the American four-way race can provide any missing thrills.
New York climbed back into first place, a half game ahead of Chicago, by popping Washington, B-2, in a night game after Chicago had been shut out for the first time, B-0, by Detroit's Fredie Hutchinson.
Boston closed in on the leaders by manhandling Philadelphia, B-3, with Ted Williams and Bobby Doerr hitting homers to back up Walt Masterson's brilliant relief pitching. The Red Sox are only two games back and Cleveland, rained out of its night game at St. Louis, is but 4½ away.
Bob Kuzava tamed his old Washington mates with four hits in his first complete game for the Yankees. Gil Coan's two-run homer in the fifth, his third of the series, robbed Kuzava of a shutout. Gerry Coleman drove home four Yankee runs with a single and double.
