Church Clock Stops as Caretaker Dies
LONG BEACH UP—For 44 years, Charles E. Hilkey had cared for the big clock in the tower of a downtown office building.
He climbed the steps to the roof twice a week to wind it by hauling on cables attached to a drum. He kept it cleaned and oiled, and running so accurately that fellow townsmen regulated their watches and their daily activities by it.
Hilkey, 70, left last Saturday on a trip to Kingsburg, near Fresno, after assuring himself that his beloved clock, which he helped install back in 1907, was in good shape.
But Sunday night a little piece of metal jammed the cogs and stopped the clock, shortly before 9:30 p.m.
At almost the same hour and minute, Hilkey was taken ill and died a few hours later.

Legal Advertising Contract Attacked
The contract for city legal advertising recently awarded to Santa Ana Register, was attacked in an injunction suit filed today in Superior Court by Charles E. Devine, secretary of the Orange County Central Labor Council, who sued as a taxpayer.
Named as defendants in the action were the Freedom News-papers, publisher of the Register, the city of Santa Ana, Mayor Courtney Chandler, and members of the city council, city clerk Erma Keeler and city treasurer M. L. Pearson.
Devine's complaint alleges that the contract is illegal and void because it does not comply with the state law that requires such contracts cover a period of a full year. The contract awarded to the Register in competitive bidding against the Santa Ana Independent, weekly tabloid which now holds the contract, contained a cancellation clause as a postscript. This clause provided that in the event the Register encountered a newsprint paper shortage it could cancel the city contract upon two months notice. Devine contends that under that clause the contract extends for only two months instead of for a full year.
