Foresight of Boysen and Rueck Responsible for City Park Family
BY JOAN S. WHITE
"Anaheim, the city with the beautiful parks."
This has become the trade mark of a city dedicated on the one hand to bustling industrial expansion, and on the other, to pleasant, suburban family living.
So widely has the fame of our parks spread, that it is an unusual Sunday in summer when the throng falls below the three thousand mark of plnickers, swimmers and those who come simply to relax and enjoy the scenery.
The twenty acres that comprise Anaheim City Park and the separate La Palma Park have been carefully landscaped to present at each season of the year an orderly, colorful vista marked by towering shade trees, well tended lawns, quiet lily-pools, and formal and informal flower beds, always a riot of bloom.
EXPERIMENT
Who has admired the lacy pepper trees and stately palms, yellow day lilies under flowering violet-blue jacaranda trees, the crimson and purple of the bougainvillea and trumpet vines cascading over the trellis in the Greek Theater and not wondered about the one responsible for these startlingly beautiful effects?
During the busy summer months, a corps of 17 gardeners are required to care for the parks. The late Rudy Boysen, famous horticulturist who developed the berry which bears his name, has recently been succeeded as park superintendent by another gifted Vic started his career as a landed him in the field of culture and the Anaheim park department has employed a professional gardener years.
"Do not hesitate to expect is Vic's advice to home garden and he, himself, follows it letter.. The greenhouse plants are propagated and house where the tender you are nursed along, are free overflowing not only with ard California stock, but with new and rare plants in stage of development.
The young plants start heated planting beds while scientifically prepared and at a constant temperature average of four months elapse these plants can be made permanent beds out of door.
COLOR FACTOR
They may be destined northwest section of Anaheim park where over one-third varieties of shade-loving blend with fuchsias, be columbine and Martha Witton geraniums, or for the ing beds which border them with purple sage, multi-zinnias, marigolds and coral shrub.
Orchids, aralias, giant phdrum, and fuchsias in h basket remain in the lath protected by a canopy of var ed ivy, the parent plant of has a trunk measuring eight in diameter.
Color is a big factor in the plantings. For example, at the statue of Madam Mo marigolds, dwarf phlox.

WHAT'S NEW?
Vic Ruedy is busy this minute with plants to further beautify the park area under his care and the island sections of several surrounding streets. Most home gardeners will appreciate the growing trend away from the time-consuming annuals which need constant replacement, to the ornamental forms of perennials and shrubs.
"Vandalism is our only trouble," says Vic. "It is heartbreaking to see plants which have been set out after months of development, broken off the first day or two by careless footsteps—and most of these footsteps are small ones."
Fellow gardeners know from experience how he feels. Let's continue to encounter folks to enjoy the park facilities, to keep a watchful eye on the little folks, and to educate the older children to have regard for the wonders of nature so bountifully displayed in our parks.
world's first plastic, FHA-approved home was announced recently by Consolidated Plastics of Danville, Calif., who built the home for W. D. Barton of Danville.
The concern claims the plastic home is 50 per cent cheaper to build than the conventional type and will last longer. It is fireproof, mildew-proof, termite-proof and warp-proof, they say.
The house is cooled and heated by a new, apparently successful combination of radiant and perimeter heating accomplished by blowing warmed or cool air through plastic pipes between two concrete tunnels running lengthwise under each side of the concrete floor, which is asphalt tile-covered.

In either case for the protection of the owner it is extremely desirable that a written agreement be signed by both parties. This written agreement in black and white can save dollars and cents and many headaches to both the owner and the contractor.
As a case in point we had an owner complain to our office that a contractor had given them an estimate on alteration and addition to a building in the amount of about $2500. The owner had had some experience in drafting or mechanical drawing and felt that he could draw his own plans. The estimate was given on the plans which had been submitted by the owner and a verbal agreement to build on a cost plus basis was entered into by the contractor and the owner.
Now let us see what happened. The contractor submitted the paid bills for all material needed on the job as well as the amount of labor which was required to assemble the material and the final bill instead of being around $2500 was around $4000. Why?
In the first place the plans the owner had drawn were not complete in regard to complicated details necessary when adding to an existing building.
