Flynn Flying Now As She Wins Again
Mary Flynn of Anaheim won her first round match yesterday as the 19th Annual Long Beach Tennis Tournament got under way with a record 150 players entered in 10 different events. The tournament will continue through Sunday, July 1, on the 20 new courts which have been completed at Long Beach City College.
Miss Flynn who is entered in girls' singles, defeated Cella Luckman of Long Beach 6-1, 6-2. In the second round she will face the winner of the Carolyn Taper-Eleanor Horowitz match. Miss Flynn is also entered in the open mixed doubles event with Julian Martinez of Anaheim.
Ronnie Legg was defeated 6-1, 6-1 in the first round of the boy's singles by Geoffrey Ball of Long Beach who is seeded third in this division.
Anne Williams of Anaheim meets Shari Commeau of Long Beach in the first round of the girl's Singles, while Karen Lenain and Jean Williams who practice together every day in Anaheim will face one another in the first round because of an unfortunate draw.
Melva Williams plays Mary Morris of Santa Ana in the first round of the women's singles.

American Legion Squad Face Huntington Beach Tomorrow
Tomorrow at 3 p.m. Anaheim's American League baseball team concludes its series with Huntington at La Palma park in a battle that will send one out of a tie for second spot.
Huntington Beach started the season off in winning its first four games—although playing two bottom teams of the loop. In last Wednesday's game at Huntington, Anaheim handed the loop leaders their first loss, a 10-3 beating.
In week-end games, Huntington won the first game against Santa Ana, but fell to the fifth place team in the tenth inning to drop from sole second place to a second place tie with Anaheim and Orange. So Huntington who won their first four now has lost two of their last three.
Anaheim had the tough luck of going up against powerful Fullerton in the first game of the season instead of tangling with them at a more advantageous time later in the season.
After their double loss to Fullerton the local nine has bowled over all foes, but the end of their win streak (five), seems in sight with either hot and cold Huntington tomorrow or dangerous Orange who edged Fullerton earlier this season. And don't count out
Flam, Clark Win At Wimbledon
WIMBLEDON, Eng. (INS)—America's men tennis stars headed by defending champion Budge Patty and United States champion Art Larsen, got a running start through today's opening play in the Wimbledon championships.
Patty, a native of Los Angeles now living in Paris, seemed unhampered by a recurrent foot injury as he breezed to triumph over David Lurie, South Africa, 6-1, 6-4, 6-4.
Larsen, the San Francisco lefty moved sedately to triumph over the bright young Australian, Merwyn Rose, 6-1, 6-2, 0-6, 6-1.
In a match that was spectacular for its lengthiness, Gardnar Mulloy, Coral Gables, Fla., ousted Philippe Washer, Belgium, 13-15, 4-6, 6-2, 6-4, 6-1.
Washer became tired and eratic after the first two sets and The American won handily after trailing Quick Victory
Herb Flam of Beverly Hills, Calif., eliminated Nareh Kumar, of India, 6-1, 6-2, 6-2, while Dick Savitt, Orange, N. J., defeated N. M. Cockburn, South Africa, 6-2, 6-2, 6-2.

After their double loss to Fullerton the local nine has bowled over all foes, but the end of their win streak (five), seems in sight with either hot and cold Huntington tomorrow or dangerous Orange who edged Fullerton earlier this season. And don't count out Santa Ana—they beat Huntington and seem certain to finish their season with one or two more upsets.
Five Anaheim regulars are hitting over the .300 mark—Jowel Esparza, catcher (.500); Gayle Herbel, shortstop (.419); Pat Roberts, left fielder (.407); Fred Head, catcher (.385) and Dick Ramella, pitcher (.333). The teams batting average fell again — it's down to a meager .2474 level.
Johnny Steinborn stole second twice against Huntington to move into a tie with Herbel as the clubs top thieves. George Bishop leads in his battles in departure with eight and is high in the extra base hits.
Pitchers Dick Ramella and Val Wiethorn continue their close battle for top pitching honors with neither one giving in. Ramella has struck out more while Wiethorn has been touched for fewer hits and runs.
Ramella has been pitching outstanding ball the last few weeks. He struck out eight against Huntington and 12 against Laguna, while giving up only two earned runs. His bad afternoon was against Fullerton when the Northern county sluggers were hitting anything and everything everywhere.
Game time is 3 p.m., tomorrow with Huntington Beach furnishing the opposition at the La Palma park stadium. Both teams are in a tie for second spot in the loop standings. A closer look at the score book shows the following information.

La Motta, former middleweight champion, says he expects to weigh 174 or 175 for the brawl, the heaviest of his pro career. Murphy probably will hit 176.

Altheide Wins Own Game in Third on Home Run for 1-0 Win
After both Joe's Service and Lehr's Service were unable to field a team in the first game at the City park last night. Grace Lutheran and Cypress VFW played a 1 to 0 ball game. It was a pitcher's duel between Art Altheide and Norm Bradbury with Altheide winning out on his own home run in the third with none on to score the only run of the game.
Altheide had 18 strikeouts and only in the fourth inning was he in trouble when Bill Rogers was safe on an error and Dan Spencer singled, but the next man popped to retire the side.
Gil Mitchell got two for two for the losers, but could receive no help from teammates to score. Bradbury had 6 strikeouts and 6 assists with a put out.

100-Mile Race At Gardena Sat.
Great news for stock car fans was announced recently with the story that NASCAR has sanctioned a 100 mile Grand National championship race at Carrell Speedway, the night of Saturday, June 30.
Officials of the Gardena raceway issued the news jointly with Johnny Mantz, western head of NASCAR (National Association of Stock Car Auto Racing).
This will be the second NASCAR sanctioned race ever held in California. The first was held at Carrell last April and was hailed a great success. The June 30 event will over-shadow the opening race, however, as better cars and drivers are expected to race.
Mantz issued a pre-view list of cars and drivers already set for the 100-mile classic. The list includes Hal Cole, 1951 Plymouth; Eric Erickson, 1951 Pontiac; Jim Rathman, Hudson Hornet; George Seeger, 1951 Studebaker V-8; Allen Heath, 1950 Ford; Bill Taylor, 1951 Studebaker V-8; Stan Noble, 1951 Henry J., and Les Bomar, 1949 Pontiac.
Billy Cantrell, Chuck Meckins, Danny Weinberg, Don Cameron, Freddie Lee and a flock of other drivers are looking for cars, Mantz said.
