For Results and Quick Anaheim Gazette by JOHN S. NEUBAUER WEATHERWISE—A slight temblor centered in the Brea area gave John Q. Citizen something to talk about beside the weather. NEWSIES—Twenty-three Nationals were injured in a spectacular two-truck crash on Orngethorpe in Flacentia Saturday. Eight were injured seriously and were taken to the Fullerton General hospital. Richard Armendaris has been arrested in connection with the vandalism in connection with the wrecking of the Francis Willard Junior HI in Santa Ana. Raymond Haroldson and Robert Tisdale are being sought for questioning in the case. Effie Critchfield Bailey, who gained fame as an opera star under the stage name of "Thea Dorre" died at the county hospital after a lengthy illness. Oliver E. Goodwin, federal labor conciliator, worked overtime during the week end in an effort to avert a strike of Orange county "outside" telephone workers which was schedled. 900 Car Prorate Set on Oranges For Coming Week by Committee In an effort to stabilize the market, the Orange Administrative Committee sharply curtailed shipments of California-Arizona oranges for the week ending June 30, setting the prorate at 900 cars, a reduction of 250 cars from the current week's prorate. Sales of California-Arizona oranges this and last week substantially exceeded shipments going forward and this, coupled with a reduction in shipments next week, should be helpful in correcting the present unsatisfactory market situation. Shippers feel, however, it will be at least another week before any material change will take place. Volume sold the week ending June 23 was slightly less than the previous week and the f.o.b. average declined approximately 30c a box. Florida apparently will be in the fresh orange market for some time to come. The latest estimate from the U.S. Department of Agriculture added another 1½ million boxes to the total Florida orange crop. Indications are shippers in that state may have at least another 2000 cars of oranges to move in fresh channels after this week. Wimbledon Matches Start Today in England WIMBLEDON, Eng. (AP)—Budge Patty of Los Angeles opened his defense of the Wimbledon singles tennis championship today with a 6-1, 6-1, 6-4 victory over Dave Lurie of South Africa. Still favoring an ankle injured nearly a year ago, the tall coast star did little running and contented himself with outlasting Lurie in long cross-court rallies from the baseline. He passed Lurie almost every time the South African tried to reach the net. A "John Dog"—an unidentified negro—was killed when his car crashed into a cement wall south of San Clemente. Wilbur Watson, 21, died from injuries sustained in a crash at Harbor Blvd., at Katella rd. COURTWISE—Arraignment of eight Anaheimers accused of contributing to the delinquency of a 15-year-old girl was continued until next Friday at the request of their attorney, Lloyd Verry. A new sanity hearing was set for July 2 for Julio Aparecido. A jury of nine women and three men deliberated two days without reaching an agreement whether he was sane on insane April 14 when he beat and chopped his companion, Santana Acosta, to death. HEADLINERS—John Wells, 22, drowned at Balboa when he slipped off his paddleboard into the water. Eight hundred workers were furloughed early last week by the Edington Fruit Co. when low citrus prices made it impossible for the grower to show a profit. Citrus prorates were blamed. Northrop Aircraft announced that it would establish a branch factory at Anaheim to produce optical range finders for the U. S. Ordnance Corps. About 2500 people will be employed. SPORTSWISE—Mary Whitney and Lu Mahoney left with the Buena Park Lynx on a 22-day barnstorming trip to the mid-west. Jack Ramsey stepped right into the Fresno Cardinals lineup after being signed by Ken Penner. A threatened strike made it impossible for Santa Ana's Bert Haysom to fly to Pittsburgh for Florida apparently will be in the fresh orange market for some time to come. The latest estimate from the U.S. Department of Agriculture added another ½ million boxes to the total Florida orange crop. Indications are shipments in that state may have at least another 2000 cars of oranges to move in fresh channels after this week. California lemons were in fair demand during the week ending June 23 as more favorable weather conditions prevailed over most of the nation. Sales were approximately 60 cars greater than the previous week, the f.o.b. average down about 40c a box. In anticipation of increased demand with the advent of summer weather, the Lemon Administrative Committee increased the prorate for the week by 75 cars to a total of 675. Prorate for the week ending June 30 was set at 700 cars of lemons. Dropo from Sox BOSTON (UP)—Big Walt Dropo, the Boston Red Sox former slugging first baseman, was optioned today to San Diego of the Pacific Coast League on a 24-hour recall basis. Dropo, an American League sensation as a freshman last year, and one of the loop's top sluggers, ran into a sophomore jinx this year. One reason was his weakness for a bad pitch. At San Diego he will come under supervision of Manager Del Baker, who handled him at Sacramento before he came up to the Red Sox. Yanks Sign Pitcher For $50,000 SAN FRANCISCO (UP)—The New York Yankees paid a bonus of "about $50,000," says scout Joe Devine, to sign up 17-year-old Ed Cereghino. The Yankee scout yesterday signed the Daly City strike out artist, who has pitched Jefferson City high to two prep school championships. Jack Ramsey stepped right into the Fresno Cardinals lineup after being signed by Ken Penner. A threatened strike made it impossible for Santa Ana's Bert Haysom to fly to Pittsburgh for a conference with Branch Rickey. Four National league clubs are interested in signing the high school graduate. One club has offered a $40,000 bonus for his services. The Orange Lionettes maintained their stranglehold on the Pacific Coast Woman's Softball league by beating Fresno. VITAL STATISTICS — The story of life and death in and around Anaheim again was reflected by the vital statistics columns: three marriage licenses issued; three deaths, and a dozen births—six boys, six girls. Marvin Furman, 20, and Elaine McDonald, 22, got themselves a marriage license. Robert Justus married Carol Ann Domries and Kenneth Lae and Mary Ann Webb began lighthouse keeping. And as it must to all mortals, death came to William Knott, a former Anaheimmer... Mary Ellen Collins died after an extended illness... George Reabb, an Anaheimer for 27 years, died in his 67th year... Life began for a dozen Anaheimers. It was a daughter for the Robert Kerrs... a girl for Enedune Rodriquez... Thomas McGuire has a new boss—a baby daughter... Harold Mack is proud of his little girl... Charles Potty also has a wee girl in his home. SAN FRANCISCO (UP) — The New York Yankees paid a bonus of "about $50,000," says scout Joe Devine, to sign up 17-year-old Ed Cereghino. Homemakers' Forum (Continued from Page 3) bride-to-be with beautiful floral arrangements for weddings at the outdoor chapel and at churches throughout the county. So many satisfied customers have asked for flowers for other occasions that facilities have recently been expanded so that the finest in flowers are available for every need. "A number of famous people have been married here," reminisced Mrs. Baggot. "Some of them used their given names instead of the ones that publicity had made famous so that we did not know who they were until afterwards. But we recognized Alan Ladd and Sue Carol immediately, and we remember their lovely wedding well." Leonard Bonas passed out smokes—a son... Joe Clayton has an heir... So does Howard Warren... And Joe Rodriguez had something to celebrate—a son... Anthony Darshay and Henry Nakanishi also had those maternity ward blues before their sons were born.
