Debate of New Price Control Bill To Start Monday
WASHINGTON (AP)—The Senate Banking committee today approved a wage-price control bill denying President Truman most of the broad new control powers he requested, and forbidding price rollbacks beyond the average for Jan. 25-Feb. 24.
Chairman Maybank (D-SC), said the action was taken by a 12-1 vote of the committee, Senator Dirksen (R-III) casting the lone dissenting vote.
Maybank said he will present the bill to the Senate tomorrow and that debate on the measure will start Monday.
Senator Moody (D-Mich) said he and others will stage a fight on the Senate floor to knock out the restriction on rollbacks.
Maybank announced the committee had stricken out a proposal to create an agency to help small business and industrial enterprises get a fair share of defense contracts, with an agreement to report out a separate bill to do the same thing.
By a vote of 7 to 6 the committee beat down an effort to knock out the rollback curb, Baybank said, and by an 8 to 5 vote it rejected a proposal by Senator Douglas (D-III) to scrap the entire measure and approve, instead, a one year extension of the price-wage control law.

Top Track Meet Starts Tomorrow
BERKELEY (UP) — World record holders, national champions and foreign stars, will assault times and distances here tomorrow and Saturday in the 63rd annual American (AAU) track and field championships.
It amounts to dress rehearsal of the U. S. Olympic team for 1952.
The juniors will run Friday, the seniors Saturday afternoon. The 3000-meter walk and the 10,000-meter run will be combined junior-senior events, both scheduled tomorrow.
The senior 400-meter race Saturday will bring together three world record holders. They are George Rhoden, defending champion whose 45.8 for the distance set last year, is an international standard; Herb McKenley, 440 yard king; and Mal Whitfield, who holds the fastest time for 880 yards. McKenley set his quarter-mile time of 46 seconds in Edwards stadium here in 1948. He and Rhoden represent Jamaica in the Olympics. Whitfield runs for the U. S. Air Forces.
Whitfield is the defending 800-meter title holder and will run in this event also.
The 6 foot 11 inch world high jump record, held by American Les Steers and long considered safe, will be in jeopardy. John Lewis Hall of the University of Florida cleared 6-9 in the NCAA meet last week and missed 6-11½ by a fraction.
The pole vault field is the greatest ever. For the first time in history three 15-foot vaulters will

that "we are still in the dark as to whether or not Hiss and his kindred, as the tools of the communists, were the ones who were shaping this thing."
Hurley said: "I think that the fact that men like Hiss have been shielded"—Hurley broke off his sentence there, then went on to add that there had been a lot of secret hearings by committees and "star chamber" sessions by executive commissions.
As an example, Hurley referred to a Congressional investigation of the atomic energy commission in 1949 and said the committee's report was "a clean bill of health, a certificate of purity and patriotism for everyone in the organization."
Yet, he added, "just a little while after Dr. Klaus Fuchs confessed in London, and the result is that they were not pure, they were not patriotic in the organization; and two of them are under sentence of death at the moment."
With reference to Wiley's question about who were the prime actors at Yalta, Hurley said he had noticed that former Secretary of State James F. Byrnes stated yesterday that he had no knowledge of the secret agreement or any secret commitments until months after Yalta.
"I think possibly that proves a complete alibi," Hurley said.
He continued:
"Then you would have left Secretary Stettinius who unfortunately is deceased, a very fine man, but you would have Ambasadar."

had noticed that former Secretary of State James F. Byrnes stated yesterday that he had no knowledge of the secret agreement or any secret commitments until months after Yalta.
"I think possibly that proves a complete alibi," Hurley said.
He continued:
"Then you would have left Secretary Stettinius who unfortunately is deceased, a very fine man, but you would have Ambasador Averell Harriman who was there.
"You have quite a number of men who were present at Yalta, but I think, Senator, to ask me to testify to the minute details what happened at Yalta would be putting me in a position where I would get off on (to) hearsay."
MacArthur's dismissal was scarcely mentioned in Hurley's first day in the witness chair, and some committee members were eager to get down to that question with him. Senator Saltonstall (R-Mass) said he wanted Hurley's views on "what it's best to do now and in the future."

GAS THIEVES SURRENDER
LOS ANGELES (UP) — Two men accused of tapping a major pipeline for $100,000 worth of gasoline surrendered to police Tuesday night.
Bernard P. Schaffer and Raymond C. Lloyd, both 31, gave up on grand theft charges. The alleged tapping of a General Petroleum Corp. line was discovered by firemen June 8 when a welder's sparks set their service station ablaze. The firefighters had a tough time subduing the fire and gave as the reason: a 60-foot tunnel from the station to the pipeline kept the blaze going.
