Grand Jury Decides Airport Club Games Can't Be Blamed on Sheriff
Any criticism of the Orange county sheriffs office for permitting the Airport club of Seal Beach to operate is mistaken, the Orange county grand jury said today, its investigation showing that the city of Seal Beach has sole authority of the club and county officials "cannot interfere."
A statement released by Foreman S. A. Meyer of the grand jury quoted the report of an investigating committee headed by Col. Elmer J. Wiles of Corona Del Mar as saying that an interview with Mayor Frank Shufelt of Seal Beach had "clarified" the city's position with respect to the Airport club, center of a recent state inquiry as to its status as a non-profit corporation, and once raided by the sheriff on gambling charges.
Mayor Shufelt was quoted by the grand jury as follows: "In July, 1950, an ordinance was adopted issuing a non-profit charter to W. L. Robertson and James V. Arnerich. An investigation by the state's attorney general resulted in an order to either close the club or revamp the ordinance.
"It was decided to do the latter, and an emergency ordinance was adopted which, among other things, provides a license fee of $37,000 instead of the old license fee of $35,000 annually. The reason this was made an emergency ordinance was because Mr. Robertson stated that the closing of Lincoln Sedan In Tough Run
Next week, for the first time in the history of stock car competition in America, an automobile which won the sweepstakes prize in the Mobilgas Economy run will attempt to set a new 24-hour performance record on the Indianapolis track. This was the word from Leo Gogerty of Gogerty-Mercury, Mercury dealership in Anaheim.
"We are eagerly awaiting news from that gruelling 24-hour run which will be undertaken about June 7," said Mr. Gogerty. This entry is the identical car, a 1951 Lincoln four-door sedan, which set a phenomenal gasoline economy record of 25,448 miles per gallon in that 850-mile Los Angeles to Grand Canyon competition. Its overdrive and gear ratio remain exactly the same as when the Contest Board of the American Automobile Association first certified it as a strictly stock car.
"After that Lincoln won sweepstakes honors here in the west in March, this car was impounded by AAA officials. Then, late in May, it was driven back to Indiana by an AAA representative. Now at the track, the same rough oval famed for the 500-mile Memorial Day races, the car is under constant supervision."
Robertson stated that the closing of the club would throw 155 people out of work. The ordinance now conforms to the requirements of the attorney general's office."
Colonel Wiles further reported to the grand jury according to Foreman Meyer, that draw poker is now the only game being operated at the club and that the bingo parlors were locked at the time the grand jury committee visited the rooms.
Colonel Wiles added, it was said, the statement that if the town of Seal Beach desires to operate that kind of business in its community it has the power; through its city council, to do so, and the county is powerless to interfere.
Robertson is publisher of the only newspaper in Seal Beach, the grand jury statement noted.
The bridge at Cleveland, Ky., is the highest continuous steel-deck bridge in the United States; 1736 feet from hill to hill and 250 feet above river level.
Color Slides On Exhibition
For the first time in Orange county an International exhibition of color slides sent from all over the United States, its territories and 14 foreign countries will be shown in Willard Jr. High school auditorium, 1342 N. Ross st., Santa Ana, June 6 at 8 p.m.
The program is sponsored by the Orange County Camera club in cooperation with El Camino Real Pictorialists of Los Angeles. The exhibition will be open to the public and no charge will be made for admission.
Five of America's most noted photographers have judged 3256 submitted transparencies and chose 492 of them on the basis of subject, compositional merit and technical quality for the exhibition.
The judges were Fred Archer, founder and president of the Fred Archer School of Photography; Josef Muench, an internationally known landscape photographer whose color shots of the scenic West have been reproduced in many of America's leading magazines.
After that Lincoln won sweepstakes honors here in the west in March, this car was impounded by AAA officials. Then, late in May, it was driven back to Indiana by an AAA representative. Now at the track, the same rough oval famed for the 500-mile Memorial Day races, the car is under constant supervision of association officials who will also time the 24-hour try next week.
With any break on weather during the run," concluded Mr. Gogerty, "we hope this 1951 Lincoln sedan, fully equipped as it would be when delivered to one of our customers, will cover more than 2000 miles during this round-the-clock test of performance. We expect it will officially prove that our economy winner is also winner for stamina. No other American stock car ever traveled so far so fast on that Indianapolis track with its tire-eating turns and brick pavement."

A special fleet of Salvation Army Shield trucks will call at homes and offices in Anaheim next Monday through Saturday in the annual salvage week campaign.
Discarded articles collected by the trucks will be taken to the Salvation Army social service center which serves this area. The stochs will be reconditioned in the center's workshops, providing work therapy, meals, beds and financial assistance for needy and handicapped persons.
O. H. Renner, chairman of the Anaheim Salvage week committee, urged local residents to call 31 during the drive to bring a truck to home or office to pick up scars.
Brigadier Ranson D: Gifford, manager of the social service center, pointed out that because the social service department does noticit money, the castoff articles provide the only means to continue the Salvation Army's social rehabilitation program.
He reported that the center had a unusually heavy demand for assistance during winter and spring and that supplies are running dangerously low, especially shoes and clothing. Summer will bring demands for play pens, lawnings, lawn chairs and patio furniture. Also needed are all types of household furniture, home appliances, radios, bedding, dishes and newspapers and magazines.
