OPS Relaxes Some Controls For Revisions
WASHINGTON (AP)—The Office of Price Stabilization (OPS) today relaxed retail and wholesale price controls on manufactured goods to allow for adjustments to conform to changes in manufacturers' ceiling prices.
Officials said the move, designed to relieve retailers and wholesalers from possible hardships under new manufacturing price regulations, will result in some price increases and some decreases—probably more decreases than increases.
Manufacturers have been ordered to set price cellings at pre-Korea levels plus subsequent cost increases. They have until July 2 to comply.
The OPS said a wholesaler or retailer buying from a manufacturer who has increased his price under the new system may recompute his own ceiling price upward.
If the manufacturer has decreased his price, the wholesaler or retailer must recompute his ceiling price downward.
OPS said today's action will give relief to the seller who had not raised his price—when the January general price freeze went into effect—to reflect a higher price charged by his supplier.
The new order was not an "across-the-board lifting" of the general freeze at retail and wholesale levels, OPS said, but rather a temporary move until more detailed cellings can be arranged. It does not apply to most food commodities since price adjustment already have been allowed on food prices. Price Director Michael V. DiSalle said yesterday that a recent rollback order is "bringing the price of beef back within the reach of people." He
Employment Up In California
Paced by gains in agriculture, government installations, and manufacturing, total employment in California rose to approximately 4,352,000 during April. At the same time, unemployment dropped to 196,000 at mid-April.
Announcement of the employment and unemployment figures followed a joint analysis of the labor market by Paul Scharrenberg, director of the State Department of Employment.
The April level of employment was 49,000 higher than the March total and exceeded any previous April figure by a wide margin. Unemployment declined by 37,000 during the same period.
Farm employment made the greatest gain from March to April, rising by 18,000 from the seasonal low point in the former month to approximately 350,000 at mid-April.
Hiring of civilian workers at military installations continued at a rapid rate, bringing government employment to a record high level of 579,000.
Materials Shortage Shuts Plant 2 Days
Because of shortages of critical materials brought about by governmental restrictions, it will be necessary to suspend Lincoln-Mercury plant operations throughout the country for two days this week. That is information just received from the Los Angeles district office by Leo Gogerty of Googery-Mercury, Mercury dealership in Anaheim.
"We regret that Lincoln-Mercury assembly lines must be shut down. Demand for new cars continues high in our territory but the factory tells us that the material situation has grown so acute that they have no alternative."
This two-day shutdown will follow the regular Memorial day holiday, May 30. That will permit all of her place of business to withdwt.

across-the-board listing of the general freeze at retail and wholesale levels, OPS said, but rather a temporary move until more detailed ceilings can be arranged. It does not apply to most food commodities since price adjustment already have been allowed on food prices. Price Director Michael V. DiSalle said yesterday that a recent rollback order is "bringing the price of beef back within the reach of people." He scoffed at a cattleman's charge that the whole price control program "is a hoax on the American people."
DiSalle appeared with Joe G. Montague, general counsel of the Texas-Southwestern Cattle Raiser's association, on television (NBC).
The price director said beef prices have to be controlled "if we are going to have price stabilization." He added that beef prices have increased 50 per cent since January, 1950.
Montague cited figures which he said showed that the expense of raising cattle also had spiraled.
OPS ordered a 10 per cent cut in cattle prices a week ago. Additional rollbacks of 4½ per cent each are scheduled for Aug. 1 and Oct. 1.
WILMINGTON, Del. (UP)—Only two horses succeeded in winning Delaware Park's Indian River and Georgetown Steeplechase Handicaps twice each. The feat was first accomplished in 1944 by M. A. Cushman's Rouge Dragon, who repeated a sweep of both stakes in 1946. The other doubles were chalked up by Elkridge, world's leading money winning jumper.
Several of the goysers, hot springs and pools in Yellowstone Park have to be cleaned annually of objects thrown in by tourists.
"We regret that Lincoln-Mercury assembly lines must be shut down. Demand for new cars continues high in our territory but the factory tells us that the material situation has grown so acute that they have no alternative.
"This two-day shutdown will follow the regular Memorial day holiday, May 30. That will permit factory employees to have four work-free days before they return to their jobs on June 4.
