Anaheim Gazetteer by JOHN S. NEUBAUER In the shadow of thy wings will I take my refuge, until these calamities be overpast—Psa. 57:1. CALIFORNIANA — The term "greaser" was first applied by the Spaniards to the Americans and Englishmen who bought hides and tallow. The traders promptly transferred this appellation to the Spaniards who sold these products, according to Hubert Howe Bancroft, one of California's greatest historians. RUMORS — A sheriff's criminologist discovered gruesome evidence in the shanty-like auto court apartment of Henry Ford McCraken in Buena Park. It was damning evidence in the circumstantial chain that is being welded to link the 34-year-old tavern guitar player to the disappearance of 40-year-old Patricia Jean Hull. Then it was reported that Hollis Holland had seen a girl wearing a little red sweater, jeans and her light hair in braids go into Cabin 9 with the man who denies knowing anything about it. Someone heard the report . . . "They saw the little girl go into the man's apartment . . ." That was a statement apparently based on fact, but when it was told and retold, the facts were Then it was reported that Hollis Holland had seen a girl wearing a little red sweater, jeans and her light hair in braids go into Cabin 9 with the man who denies knowing anything about it. Someone heard the report . . . "They saw the little girl go into the man's apartment . . " That was a statement apparently based on fact, but when it was told and retold, the facts were twisted . . . Telephone bells rang . . . ". Did you know they found that poor little girl in that awful man's apartment?" "No!" was the reply of surprised amazement. No sooner had the connection been broken, than this party dialed a number . . . "Have you heard they found that poor little girl's body in that horrid man's apartment?" Tongues wagged . . people buzzed with excitement . . The rumor grew and spread . . . From Buena Park it jumped to La Habra . . to Fullerton . . Anaheim . . Placentia . . Orange and Santa Ana . . Soon, the entire county knew the news . . . "They found the poor little girl." But these gentle people built themselves up for a big letdown. When they discovered that they had helped to spread idle gossip, they felt as guilty as the little pup by the puddle of water on the kitchen floor. PICTURE — Incidentally, that remarkable photo that played such an important role in the tragic Buena Park case is a school picture. "All the kids have them," Hubert McConnell said. Incidentally, his little brother, Frank McConnell, is tinkering with his soapbox derby racer. He was a winner last year, y'know. Helicopters from the recently formed Marine Corps air facility, piloted by Lt. Col. G. W. Herring and Major W. B. Mitchell took part in the biggest search in Orange county history. Pilots Thomas Tugan and Ralph Alexander of the Civil Air Patrol hit a power line and nose-dived into a Buena Park field after an unsuccessful takeoff from the Fullerton airport. They were part of the Old Baldy squadron under the command of Lt. Ralph Alexander. Men like Rue Bohannon, Bill Doyle, Rudy Grund and a thousand-and-one others took time out from their daily toll to aid in the search. This was heartbreaking work for which everyone volunteered.
