Anaheim High Team Closes Local Season Tomorrow at La Palma Park
Newport Harbor Drops Anaheim Into 6th Place
With left fielder Gene Crain slamming out two singles and a double in three times at bat, the Newport Sailors came from behind to roll past the Anaheim Colonist Nine, 4-2, Friday on the Tar's windy diamond.
The Sailor's victory moved them up into a tie for third place with Orange while the loss dropped the Colonists into undisputed fifth spot with a win-loss record of 2-6. Santa Ana remained undefeated in league play with Fullerton right on the Saints neck. Huntington still looked to be the strongest team in the league—they have to be as they're holding up the other five teams in the league.
Anaheim scored first when in the second inning Carl Hatfield blooped a single over second base; was moved down to second when Dick Gonzales drew a walk; both were moved up another base when Ed Herrera sacrificed himself; Enoch Peterson was out pitcher to first, then Val Wlethorn slashed a single right along the right field base line scoring Hatfield and Gonzales.
That was the ohly Colonist scoring of the afternoon and it

Five athletes scored enough points to edge three schools—Compton, Glendale and Glendale Hoover, for the 39th Annual Southern California CIF track and field championships Saturday afternoon at Long Beach Wilson high.
San Diego captured the team title while winning only one event—the broad jump with a leap of 23 feet 3 inches, by John Parker. Frank Johnson leaped 22 feet 1¼ inches, for third while Alex Hudson tied Green of Santa Barbara at 22 feet 1 inch for fourth. Parker edged Compton's Garrison for the gold medal as Garrison leaped "only" 23 feet 2¼ inches.
Other point winners for the Cavemen were Charles Powell, second in the shot put with a toss of 57 feet 9¼ inches, and Hal Espy, fourth in the 440 yard
Colonists Meet The High-Flying Santa Ana Club
John Wallen, head coach at Anaheim high, takes squad into La Palma park to row afternoon against the leading Santa Ana Saints for last local appearance of the game.
Santa Ana was booed off the CIF playoffs Saturday, by Grossmont high on the diamond. It was the straight year the Saints sent the league in the CIF offs. Last season they lost Long Beach Wilson in the finals.
The Saints are undefeated league competition this year—a 8-0 win-loss mark. They against their chief rival, Fulton, Friday at Santa Ana in league decider while Anaheim closes their season at Orlando against the Panthers. If Fulton would win against the San Antonio two teams would be tied—the title, as they were last year. In the first round the Saints ed over the Braves, 7-3.
Against Grossmont Saturation the Saints could collect only nine hits—one by Harvey Bryan, sacker and the other three catcher Eddie Fouch. Saint ch
the second inning Carl Hatfield blooped a single over second base; was moved down to second when Dick Gonzales drew a walk; both were moved up another base when Ed Herrera sacrificed himself; Enoch Peterson was out pitcher to first, then Val Wielhorn shashed a single right along the right field base line scoring Hatfield and Gonzales.
That was the ohly Colonist scoring of the afternoon and it seemed like a shut out for Wielhorn until that horrible fifth inning. Lloyd Swingle, center fielder and part time shot putter, started the Sailors rally with a single into center. The next pitch got by Burdick for a passed ball—sending Swingle to second.
Third sacker, Lusk, walked as did pitcher, George Lobono. Armend Nettles reached first on a fielders choice as Swingle was out at the plate—Dick Coen to Herrera. Shortstop Dick Lane then tied up the game with a double into center field.
That was all for Wielhorn and his over use of four's. The sophomore whiz, in 4½ innings, faced 15 batters. He gave up four runs; four hits, four runs all earned, four free passes to first and only one strike out.
Dick Ramella, the other half of the Colonist pitching staff, came in to put out the fires, but it was (Continued on Page 7)

Cal Students Claim Teeter (Right) Title
BERKELEY (P)—Students at the University of California — famed for its academic and athletic laurels — today claimed a new championship — a world record for the old kindergarten pastime, teeter tettering.
Gary Kaveney, 19, of Colusa, climbed stiffly off his end at 12:54 a.m. Sunday and weaved off to bed, mumbling "I'd never do it again—even for money."
With two fraternity brothers, sophomore Gary had bounced up and down 53 hours, 54 minutes since 7 p.m. Thursday. Bob Kinkead, 20, San Jose, started seawaking with Gary: But Bob's dad read about it and promptly grounded him. Bob Brownlee, 20, Yuba City, took over.
University of Washington students protested "foul!" over Kaveney's use of a relief rider. Two Washington students teetered 52 hours, five minutes last week.
"So it took two of them to do it in Washington," retorted Kaveney's pals. "We've got the only one-man teeter totter champ in the world!"

Sacramento Sets Attendance Record, Has Two Game Lead
By The Associated Press
The Sacramento Solons have hit a couple of jackpots, thanks to Manager Joe Gordon and the loyal capital city fans.
First the Sacs, powered by Gordon's hitting, broke a first place tie in the Pacific Coast league baseball chase and climbed into the lead with a two game cushion over Portland.
Second, the Solons were cheered by the announcement last night that the week's attendance of 50,412 set an all-time record for Sacramento baseball. The previous record week was in 1947

The victory in the opener came at Gordon's 17th homer of the season. And in the second game Gordon drove in two runs in the eighth, with a single, to hip the Stars.
Oakland, by subduing the Portland Beavers 6-3 and 8-6 took over the third spot in the standings from Los Angeles. The Oakland twirler, Bill Ayres, almost had shutout in the opener. He had the Beavers blanked until the ninth frame. In the nightcap with the count knotted 5-6 in the seventh, Loyd Christopher who ped one over the left field fence with one aboard to cop the white for Oakland.
Los Angeles split a double blit with Seattle. The Rainiers taking the first 13-7 and the Angels the second 9-4. At San Diego the Padres beat San Francisco 6-2 but the opener and the Seals took the second 4-3.
Magnolia Beats Joe's Service
In the game Friday night at City park, the newly entered Magnolia Stars came out on top over Joe's Service in a tight pitchers battle with a score of 1-0. Pete Guadan was the winner allowing but two singles, striking out nine and walking one. Raul Sanchez was the loser allowing three hits, striking out ten, and giving up four walks.
The only score came in the sixth inning when leadoff Castillo walked, took second on a routine ground ball second to first, advanced to third on an error by shortstop Salazar on a ball hit by pinch blitter Neilson. Pete Guadan then walked to load the bases and Moran then lifted a long fly ball to center field and Castillo tagged up and scored after the catch with the winning run.
Avalos walked and Magdaleno filed to left to end the inning. Joe's Service was unable to touch Guadan in the remaining two innings and that was the game.
