HISTORICAL — Whenever the Spanish colonized in the new world, they built their pueblos around the church. The Anahealmers, however, built their school first. Incidentally, the school building was designed to serve a two-fold purpose. It was firstly, an educational building and, secondly, an assembly hall where town meetings might be held. In 1861-82 the Santa Ana river went on a rampage, overflowing and flooding the colony. The turbulent waters undermined the foundations of the shaded school building. It was declared unsafe. School went on as usual, though Classes were held in the Water company building until 1869 when the school was rebuilt. TODAY — Anaheimers should have the well being of their youth at heart today as their forefathers did when the city was founded. Today Anaheim elementary schools have an attendance of nearly 2000. These youngsters should have the best educational facilities that can be provided. CHURCHES—The Presbyterian church was the first congregation to be organized in Anaheim. The Rev. L. P. Webber, who was also the founder of the Westminster colony, formed the congregation in 1869. The first Presbyterian church or rather the first church in Anaheim—was erected in 1873 and has been a factor in the community life ever since. In 1875, the Episcopal church was organized and a year later the Roman Catholic parish was established. FRATERNITIES—The Masonic Lodge, F. & A.M. 207, was the first fraternal organization of the prospering community. It was established in 1870 and two years afterwards, in 1872, the IOOF came into being. FIRE DEPARTMENT — Anaheim's fire department was organized in 1872. It consisted of a hook and ladder; buckets and one of those two-wheel, hand-drawn hose carts. The entire fire fighting equipment didn't cost more than 1500. Anaheim was a virtual park in those days. Water was plentiful, with the main irrigation ditches and the open materials running... FIRE DEPARTMENT — Anaheim's fire department was organized in 1872. It consisted of a hook and ladder; buckets and one of those two-wheel, hand-drawn hose carts. The entire fire fighting equipment didn't cost more than $400. Anaheim was a virtual gas in those days. Water was plentiful, with the main irrigation ditches and the open laterals running through streets and water alleys. There was an ample supply of water available at all times for fire-fighting purposes. Incidentally, much has been written about the elaborate irrigation system that made Anaheim the richest vineyard in the world, but little has been said about the domestic water supply. In 1879, a 103-foot Artesian well was sunk. By means of an engine, the water was raised to a 35-foot tank. Those pumping from this well were required to LEGAL NOTICES (Pub.
