The game was never in doubt as the Merchants picked up three runs in the first inning on a walk, two singles and an infield out. The batting hero for the Merchants was Roger Pannier who got two for two Joe Esparza, in the fifth inning, hit a ball just over the shortstops glove for the first hit and taking care of the chance for a no-hitter by Perez.
Reveles followed with another hit but they both died on base as pitcher Sanchez struck out to end the inning.

Lopat Earns Pay Beating The Indians
Al Lopez knows now how Lou Boudreau felt every time Eddie Lopat pitched against the Cleveland Indians.
Twice this season now the new Tribe pilot has looked on hellessly as the crafty New York Yankee lefthander tied his boys into knots.
"How does he do it?" Lopez asked before last night's game. "I just can't figure out why he beats us so regularly. He's no better than lots of pitchers in the league."
Some two and a half hours later, Lopah had added another to his long string of victories over the Redskins, his favorite people. The score was 11-4, and Lopez still was groping for the answer.
The victory enabled the Yanks to increase their lead over the runner-up Washington Senators to two and one half games. The Senators dropped an 8-7, 11-inning decision to the Boston Red Sox in the only other game played in the major leagues.
Action picks up in both leagues today as St. Louis, Chicago and Detroit invade the American League.
Old Sol Better Because Joe Goronjo By JOE LIPPER
SACRAMENTO (P)—Jiffy Gordon is threatening out-sizzle the California Sun with his feats as manager and second baseman of Sacramento's Pacific Coast League Solons.
The erstwhile New York Yankees and Cleveland phenom, working his first season as a skipper, has sparked his club to just one game out of first place with his managerial acumen and blistering bats.
The Solons, after a rain-soaked spring training and a bad first week, caught Gordon's contagion hustle to win 25 of the next three games and become the hotter club in the loop.
The 36 year old Flasher himself is setting the pace. He's hitting hot .373. After seven weeks, he leads the league in home run with 16 and in runs batted in, 4. And he's played in all but one of his team's 46 games.
His bosses, the press box fraternity and baseball filberts genially are loud and unanimous in their acclaim.
"That boy may go on to become one of the really great managers in baseball," said Sacramento President Eddie Mulligan. "He's a born leader and his baseball is both sound and brilliant."
"Joe Gordon may be the greatest baseball player in Sacramento history," one Sacramento scribes said.
"The performance of Joe Gordon...has brought a new standard of play into the league," wrote another.
"Pacific Coast League's rookie of the year is probably Joe Gordon," a Los Angeles columnist wrote.
And a San Francisco writer observed:
"Joe Gordon has introduced a new method of managing a ball club—he simply waits until a couple of his hirelings get on base then he whacks a home run."

Action picks up in both leagues today as St. Louis, Chicago and Detroit invade the American league's eastern cities for the first time this year. Meanwhile, Eastern clubs in the National league play their first games in the west.
Lopat wasn't exactly brilliant against the Indians. He surrendered only six hits but two of them were home runs by former Yankee George Stirnweiss and Jim Hegan. The largest crowd of the major league season, 66,265 paid fans witnessed the game.

Joe Gordon has introduced a new method of managing a ball club—he simply waits until a couple of his hirelings get on base then he whacks a home run."
Charlie Graham, Jr., vice-president of the Sacs and a close observer of Gordon in action, labels him a genius who has taught his ball club how to really hustle.
"Joe's a born leader and the boys on the club are doing just a little extra-beyond their very best for him," Graham observed. "They hustle for that extra base or that extra foot to snare a grounder."
He takes time out to point out and correct the hitting, running and fielding faults of the young players."
A half dozen of Gordon's players are hitting better than .300. One first baseman Bob Boyd, with less than 100 professional games behind him, leads the league with a fat .384.
The Solons trail the Portland Beavers by a single game. The two teams clash in the opener of a crucial series here tonight.
Gordon probably took a salary cut in quitting Cleveland Indians to take the Sacramento helm. He has a two year pact at a reported $22,500 per year plus attendance bonuses.
In the coast loop, he is pitted against some of the brighter names in baseball history who are now managing clubs — Rogers Hornsby at Seattle, Mel Ott at Oakland, Stan Hack at Los Angeles and Leffy O'Doul at San Francisco.

Coach Smith Is Doing All Right For Fullerton
Head swimming coach at Fullerton JC, James R. Smith, did it again. He not only captured another championship (his 120th), but in capturing the first California JC swim championships at San Luis Obispo last week, completely humiliated all other teams by scoring a grand total of 142 points to runner up Stockton's 41.
Besides most of the swimming events, the closest race was for second and third place in the meet standings behind the high flying Hornets, who had their fins set on setting several records.
Fullerton swimmers set four Cal Poly records while Don Rosenthal of Santa Monica set a pool record in the 50 yard free style and a pool and national JC record in the 100 yard free style. Rosenthal won the 50 yard final in 24.3, but his preliminary time of 23.9 stands as a pool record and a California JC championship meet record. His time of 52.6 in the 100 yard free style was a national record breaking the year old mark of 52.9, set by Hornet Roy Brown.
Roy Brown never looked better as he completely dominated the field in the 1500 meters free style. By the time third placer Stan McConnell finished the race Brown was back in the hotel eating a T-bone steak. His time of 20:15.7 for swimming, not eating, was a pool record. Hornet George Kroeger placed fifth.
Brown picked up his second gold medal when he edged team mate Bob Best in the 150 yard individual medley. Brown's time of 1:39.0 was a new pool mark.

Best won the 200 yard breaststroke in 2:26.4 with Dick Erman finishing in third spot. Best won the 100 yard breaststroke in 1:04.5 with Erman ending up fifth. Erman swam middle man on the medley relay that finished fourth—yes, fourth. His partners were Bernie Wagner and Art Bays, ex backstroker.
Joe Phillips collected two individual victories plus swimming on the winning four man relay—good enough for three gold medals. Phillips set a pool record in the 220 yard free style in the time of 2:16.5, with friend Phil Siersen placing second as he did in the 100 yard free style. Phillips won the 440 yard free style in 2:00.4 with McConnell next in line across the finish.
McConnell pulled the upset of the meet when he stroked 200 yards on his back in 2:27.5 to defeat Hornet Bernie Wagner who had never been beaten by a junior college swimmer in the 200 this year. The time was good enough for a new pool record.

Still Anybody's Coast League
But a Leader May Emerge Soon
By The Associated Press
It's still a wide-open race in the Pacific Coast league, but another month may find some solid contender stepping out in front to show the way.
Manger Del Baker of San Diego says that on the basis of what he has seen so far Sacramento looks good. "I like their hitting." says Baker. "But it will be several weeks before the race begins to shape up."
This week may bring some important player shifts from the majors, for the big league clubs have to conform to player limits and are beginning to cut down their rosters.
Los Angeles has acquired three Chicago Cubs pitchers, Warren Hacker, Eddie Chandler and Doyle Lade, and this trio may be just what Manager Stan Hack needs to keep his club in the fight. The Angels, a bad seventh in 1950, look like a first division team.
Manager Lofty O'Doul is glad to have Con Dempsey, a 8-9 pitcher last year, back from Pittsburgh. Dempsey lost two for the Pirates and they sent him back yesterday. O'Doul also picked up Dewey Soriano, who had been cut loose by Seattle. Soriano had a 3.75 earned run average last season. The Seals acquired outfielder Eddie Sayer from San Diego in exchange for first baseman Jack Graham and another player to be delivered later. Graham goes back to the team that sent returning to San Diego for the Seattle series he finds himself with San Francisco playing in Los Angeles.
San Diego has latched on to pitcher Guy Fletcher, a crafty veteran righthander, who was cut loose by San Francisco.
Seattle also released second baseman Emil Verban outright.
Attendance in the Coast league isn't showing any improvement, and typical of the lack of interest was the crowd of less than 5000 for the San Diego-Hollywood doubleheader that produced two exciting finishes. A 5000 crowd for a city with a 4,000,000 population to draw from isn't anything to cheer clubowners.
Clough, Besse Pace Hurlers
SAN FRANCISCO (A/N)—Rookie right hander Walter Clough of Sacramento and veteran southpaw Herm Besse of Los Angeles paced Pacific Coast League pitchers through games of last Sunday, each with four wins and no defeats.
Clough, acquired from the San Jose club of the Class C California League, has appeared in nine games and Besse in 10.
Sad Sam Jones, six foot four inch right hander with San Diego, maintained his strikeout lead with 88 for 74 innings pitched.
