Anaheim High Baseball Team Could Move Into Third Place With Win SUNSET LEAGUE STANDINGS W L Pet Santa Ana 5 0 1,000 Fullerton 4 1 .800 Orange 2 2 .400 Newport 2 1 .600 Anaheim 1 4 .200 Huntington 1 4 .200 Anaheim's Colonist baseball squad will have an excellent chance to move into a tie for third spot in the Sunset league race by winning tomorrow's game against Huntington Beach at La Palma park. Provided Santa Ana knocks over Orange, as expected; Fullerton wallops Newport, if they are true to form; Anaheim, in beating Huntington, could throw the league in a very tight race—for third spot, that is. Santa Ana captured its second straight bid to the CIF playoffs by walloping Fullerton, 7-3. Since the CIF playoffs started before the league race is over the league officials decided to send the winner of the first round. The Saints rolled over all teams in gaining a strong hold on the league title as well as being the league's representative. Playoffs The first round of the CIF playoffs starts Saturday afternoon with four games commencing. Santa Barbara of the free lance league goes against Compton, Coast league, while South Pasadena of the Foothill league battles with Colton of the Citrus Belt league. their five league games compared to the Colonist's 13. The opponents of Huntington Beach have crossed the plate 26 times compared to the Blue and Golds opponents 29 times. The Orange and Black have the edge in runs, but Anaheim leads in the hitting department. Team Batting 201 Anaheim has banged out 26 hits to their foes 35. Huntington has collected 25 hits compared to their opponents 38. Huntington's team batting average is a lowly .183 while the Colonists are hitting at a .201 clip. Man with the big stick for the local nine is Carl Hatfield, first baseman. He has banged out six hits (one triple) in 12 times at bat for a hefty .500 average. Dick Gonzales follows with a .400 average. Next in line are George Bishop (.375), Ken Coen (.300), John Holve (.250), Gayle Herbel (.200), Enoch Peterson (.200), Ed Herrera (.187), John Steinborn (.117) and Duanne Masterson (.111). Game time is 3:15 p.m. tomorrow afternoon at La Palma park stadium. Coach John Wallen will start the same combine that won against the Panthers except pitcher Dick Ramella. Val Wielhorn was the losing chucker in the first Huntington game and he will be out to capture his loop victory. The revitalized Sacramento club moved to within half a game of the league leading Portland Beavers by clouting Hollywood, 5-1, Wednesday night behind the five hit pitching of a rookie right hander named Walt Clough. For the Solons, who finished dead last in 1950, it was a striking contrast to their frequent position as the league's doormat. Portland obliged somewhat, too, by succumbing by 7-5 to third place Los Angeles. Oakland moved into the first division by way of a 14-7 autopsy on the Seattle Rainiers, and San Diego supplanted Hollywood in sixth place by whipping San Francisco; 5-4. Ninth inning singles by Les Peden, Jess Dobernic and Bob Talbot decided the issue at Portland; witness base running by rightfielder Bob Thurman prevented San Francisco from tying the game with San Diego in the ninth. Heroes of the evening were the aforementioned Mr. Clough, who curved seven strikeouts at the Hollywoods while walking only two and Messrs. Lloyd Christopher Bill Jennings, and Jim Marshall whose balwork for Oakland caused most of the damage in that wild affair at Seattle. Christopher, with a triple, double, and a single, led the runs batted-in parade with four. Thurman's base running, or lack thereof, pointed up rather unhappily pity the truth of the adage: he whistitates is lost. Thurman certainly was. Thurman was aboard via a single when Gene Valla blooped a short hit to right. Usually a fast man on the basepaths, Thurman waited too long and was tagged dead at second. Dario Lodigiani's pinch hit homer brought Valla across, and had Thurman also been on base, the Seals would have had a ninth inning tie and an overtime ball game. Church Softball Delayed in Start The Recreation department's Church Softball League scheduled to start tonight will not begin play until Tuesday, May 15. This has been due in the main to the change of plans by two of the churches and the possibility of extending the league from 10 to 12 teams. Grace Lutheran, one of the big guns of last year's league entered its team in the City League and is subbing with a younger group in the Church League. Church teams ready to go are Grace Lutheran, Zion Lutheran, Church of Christ, last year's champs, Anaheim Nazarene, Bethel Baptist, Calvary Baptist, White Temple, St. Boniface, Presbyterian and Evangelical. Tuesday night will see Zion Lutheran and Bethel Baptist in the first game at 7:15 and White Temple and St. Boniface in the second contest. A time limit of 1:30 minutes has been set on all games.
