MIDDLE AGE HEROES Replace Shining Youth in Favor
America's greatest public idols today are all past middle age.
Most recent example is General Douglas MacArthur, whose impact on 150 million Americans has been one of most emotional of modern times.
Seldom, if ever, say veteran observers, has there been such a spontaneous express of national interest as that which greeted the 71-year-old general on his return from Korea.
This statement comes from newsmen who have recorded other American phenomena such as the public acclaim of Charles Lindbergh after his trans-Atlantic flight in 1927, the parade for General Dwight Eisenhower after World War II, and the impact of the late President Roosevelt at his peak of popularity.
No young Lockinvar in shining armor could have inspired a greater surge of mass feeling than the "Old Soldier" in his khaki trench coat and battered-cap.
It's interesting to note that nobody except the general himself has referred to him as old. Certainly the vigor of his personality, the erectness of his carriage and the fighting tilt of his chin hold no suggestion of age.
The American people have given him the kind of roaring, brass-lunged cheer that once was reserved for youthful heroes.
There are other notable examples which indicate that America is growing up; and is no longer a nation of youth-worshipers.
His success as co-star of "So Pacific" started a new vogue heroes for romantic fiction. No adays the hero of the piece of life, Ezio Pinza has aroused romantic hero-worship of the far nine half of the nation to far greater degree than did the slick-hail Rudolph Valentino in the twenties.
Camp Training for Anaheim Girl
outs Held in Fullerton Scout House
the Fullerton Scout House last week. A colorful movie narrated by Miss Leslie Batchman showed typical scenes of day camping held in the past at Hillcrest park.
A highlight of the picture was an impressive flag ceremony which opened and closed each session of camp. Each morning camp life began by the children tying lunches to a rope clothesline to avoid invading ants. Folk dancing and songs, weaving of mats from Eucalyptus bark, nature study and hikes, were some of the camp activities photographed by the Camp Directors.
During the training session yesterday, Brownie leaders from Anaheim High school district and Northern Orange County Council learned how to fold the flag, and their part in the ceremony was explained. Simple knots, rope lashing, hand crafts were demonstrated. Plans for the cook-out were made for Tues., May 15th, 9:30-1:30 in the Fullerton park.
Intermediate leaders will have advanced training in the same course, Thurs., May 10th with cook-out scheduled for Thurs., May 17.
The last training session Tuesday May 22 for Brownies and Thursday, May 24 for Intermediates will include selecting the location of individual units for day camping this year in Hillcrest Park, called Camp Pine Knolls Following group discussion, co-leaders will formulate plans for
Lois Rebekah Meets,
Nominate Officers
Officers were nominated at the Lois Rebekah Lodge meeting last Friday evening, held at the IOOF Hall. Gale Cleveland, Noble Grand, presided.
Five local delegates and several Anaheim members of the lodge left yesterday for Santa Cruz to attend the Rebekah State Assembly for the week.
After the meeting refreshments were served and the members played Bingo.
The American people have given him the kind of roaring, brass-lunged cheer that once was reserved for youthful heroes.
There are other notable examples which indicate that America is growing up; and is no longer a nation of youth-worshipers.
The top matinee idol of our era, for instance, is no bright-eyed youth, but a stocky, graying man who never would have been considered for a romantic lead in the movies of the 1920's.
Well past the halfway mark of life, Ezio Pinza has aroused romantic hero-worship of the few nine half of the nation to far greater degree than did the slick-hallad Rudolph Valentino in the twenties.

Discussion will be held concerning the unit leadership for the 7th and 8th graders primitive camp to be held in the park, but entirely separate from the rest of the groups.
