Vote to Expand Clubhouse at Ebell Meeting Yesterday – By-Laws Revised
Four significant events were combined in the all important May meeting of Anaheim Ebell club yesterday afternoon when members convened at the club house to elect officers, hear revisions in the by-laws, vote on the building expansion and to honor their junior members.
Rough straw hats filled with riotous spring flowers decorated the luncheon tables and the clubhouse walls for the meeting which opened with a delicious luncheon served by Mrs. Earl Spencer and Mrs. Alice Schmid and their committees.
In honor of the five "graduates" who will transfer membership from junior to senior Ebell this year, Mrs. Earl Spencer, president, introduced Mrs. James Cavanaugh, president of Southern district Federation of Junior Membership who spoke briefly on cooperation between the two clubs. Other Junior officers presented were Mrs. Ray Ortez, Jr., Mrs. Robert Bidwell, Mrs. D. B. Baker and Mrs. Kenton Wines. Mrs. Arthur Roquet, senior advisor, was also introduced. Luncheon music was presented by members of Anaheim High school music department as a preview to their operetta later this month.
Mrs. Albert Launer of Fullerton was luncheon speaker, her subject, "The Maturing Mind," based on the book by Overstreet.
New senior members are Mrs. Fred Jeter, Mrs. John Daniels, Mrs. Lewis Wentz, Mrs. Wesley the south wall of the clubhouse to the edge of the present porch on that side, with the ceiling to be altered to conform to the addition.
An estimated 600 square feet would be added as well as improved ventilation, and an additional entrance. The membership also voted to appoint a building committee to arrange for the contract, with work to begin in July. Approximate cost is $4000, to be financed by the club.
Mrs. W. E. Whiteman was named to head the organization for the coming year with Mrs. Joe Thompson as first vice-president; Mrs. Charles Bush, second vice-president; Mrs. George La Follette, recording secretary; Mrs. Lloyd Ross, corresponding secretary; Mrs. Robert Beckler, treasurer; Mrs. Blanche Gilbert, financial secretary; Mrs. Fred Larson, auditor; Mrs. Albert Cranston, curator; Mrs. William Rickel, parliamentarian and Mrs. Harry Pearson and Mrs. C. C. Reinert, trustees.
"Our American Orange," the book by Mrs. Mae Vander Boom was honored in the art corner. Mrs. Claude Slack introduced two new members, Mrs. Donald Rees and Mrs. Charles Rinehart.
In one of the most compelling addresses presented this year, Louise Bray, noted mental hygiene consultant and a member of the American Institute of Family Relations, addressed the audience.

With only one vote of dissention, the membership formed an overwhelming majority in favoring expansion of the clubhouse. The proposed plan, outlined by Miss E. Kate Rea, would extend
"Our American Orange," the book by Mrs. Mae Vander Boom was honored in the art corner. Mrs. Claude Slack introduced two new members, Mrs. Donald Rees and Mrs. Charles Rinehart.
In one of the most compelling addresses presented this year, Louise Bray, noted mental hygiene consultant and a member of the American Institute of Family Relations, addressed the audience on their responsibilities as women.
Outlining the basic weaknesses in marriage she listed first the area of social acceptance, in which she stressed the need of the couple for mutual friends. The speaker also defined the need for self expression as an important factor in a successful marriage. Too often, she explained, the wife loses all sense of her own significance, on marrying. "It is very difficult yet very important to maintain one's own individuality and yet surrender it." She recommended that women acquire status in their own right by participating in church, school or community projects.
Marriage in America will not be a success until women are as glad to be women as men are to be men," she said. She urged her audience not to fight the differences between men and women but to accept them gladly and to take pride in the "art" of being a woman. "No roll is so fulfilling as having a happy husband," she concluded.
In the revisions to the by-laws, life membership fee was raised from $100 to $200 with a minimum of 25 life members.
Entrance fee was raised from $5.00 to $10.00 and reinstatement from $1.00 to $2.00.
