Anaheim Jobs and Prosperity EMPLOYMENT IN ANAHEIM is at a high rate at present, although there is a fairly large pool of skilled men and women who live in Anaheim but work in plants in the fringes of Los Angeles, in Santa Ana, and other places within commuting distance of Anaheim. This situation is of great interest to Anaheim industries and business firms because the process of commuting becomes expensive and tedious sooner or later. Many of the individuals in this group would gladly swap jobs to get good employment nearer home. THERE IS THE POSSIBILITY this "mobile" labor force may become more active in trying to locate in the Anaheim area in the near future as temporary readjustments in the defense plants outside Anaheim cause some temporary layoffs or employment slows down temporarily as manufacturing units switch over to more war production. Crop picking firms and farmers in the Anaheim area, of course, are wondering if they will get all the hands they need to harvest the crops. All in all, however, the prosperity of 1950 in Anaheim is expected to continue, although there may be moderately fewer things to buy. Here is a photograph taken of Center st. from the Anaheim Gazette office showing the water which swirled around the city hall during the flood of early March 1938. Water rushing down the Santa Ana river broke out of its bounds around 4 a.m. and swept into Anaheim causing seven deaths and enormous destruction. There were no water control dams on the river at that time. Rain–It Is Needed More and More – Will Scientists Turn It Off and On? By RALPH H. TAYLOR (Executive Secretary, Agricultural Council of California) Turning On—and Off— The Weather Rain. Ever since man learned to come in out of it, he has been baffled by it. It is both the bane and blessing of man's existence. While most mortals still stand in awe of the weather, of recent years man in his cockiness has set about trying to get rain where he wants it when he wants it. control can revolutionize chemical and germ warfare by simply provoking rainfall through seeding clouds with proper ingredients. With the proper prevailing winds, a given area could be saturated with gas or germs and supply lines would be snarled by mud. Of equal importance, the chamber states, "there are millions of acres in the western half of the United States which are fertile enough to yield bumper crops." Excelsior Dairy Listed Orange County Largest The Excelsior Creamery Co., distributor of dairy products in Anaheim and throughout Orange county, is taking considerable pride in its newest service to Orange counties—the distribution of Duncan Hines ice cream. The ice cream is made according to a special recipe developed by Duncan Hines and is now made throughout the United States by very carefully selected companies. The Excelsior Creamery is the first West Coast organization to be selected for the distribution of this fine product. Rain. Ever since man learned to come in out of it, he has been baffled by it. It is both the bane and blessing of man's existence. While most mortals still stand in awe of the weather, of recent years man in his cockiness has set about trying to get rain where he wants it, when he wants it—scientific rainmaking. The potentialities are tremendous, both militarily and domestically. In a lately released 20-page booklet, "The Technical, Economic and Legal Aspects of Weather Modification," the California State Chamber of Commerce leads off: There has been a rapid-fire series of discoveries which have given some of the most eminent scientists a conviction that weather can be greatly modified... at a low initial cost." State Chamber Survey The chamber report goes on to estimate that conceivably weather control can revolutionize chemical and germ warfare by simply provoking rainfall through seeding clouds with proper ingredients. With the proper prevailing winds, a given area could be saturated with gas or germs and supply lines would be snarled by mud. Of equal importance, the chamber states, "there are millions of acres in the western half of the United States which are fertile enough to yield bumper crops. Yet this huge area is relatively undeveloped because of lack of moisture. New Agricultural Domain "Adition of a few inches of rainfall each year, particularly at certain seasons, should result in abundant production and creation of a new gigantic, fertile domain. "The cost of manmade rain would be counted only in thousands of dollars," the chamber survey maintains, "where cost of dams, ditches, pumps, power and labor for the same amount of water from irrigation works would be counted in millions. The result of artificial rainmaking could be a great shift in agriculture to the semi-arid valleys of the sparsely populated Western States. This would be accompanied by a tremendous rise in the industrialization of the West. "But," warns the chamber, "if there are tremendous possibilities in the field of weather modification, there probably has never been a case in history, except the development of atomic energy, which abounds in such opportunity for disaster because of irresponsible parties." Aside from the terrifying military destruction that might be wrought through weather control: "Rains increased during spring and summer in the interest of farmers and ranchers in the mountain states of Idaho, Montann and Wyoming could add to the destructiveness of floods in the lower valley of the Missouri river." The hazards, the chamber goes on to point out, are numerous, as most farmers will recognize immediately. Legal Aspects Then there are the legal aspects of rainmaking control. Is it possible to steal somebody else's rain? INCE economy REGULARLY LEGAL Aspects Then there are the legal aspects of rainmaking control. Is it possible to steal somebody else's rain? Obviously some method of supervision must be worked out. A new day may be dawning when farmers will be able to water the South Forty merely by dropping a seed in a cloud, when generals can wage wars with raindrops. But farmers, while watching developments, will continue to produce by the bounty of the Almighty, the food and fibre that is required for the sustenance of the people of this great nation. HEAVY RAINS FORCE SWITCH DES MOINES (P)—It's a poor spring that isn't good for something and this cold, wet one may prove beneficial at least in one way. It may help the Department of Agriculture's program to boost corn acreage. Spring work in most of the state today is from one to three weeks behind schedule. Normally a good part of the oats crop would be seeded in southern Iowa by this time of the year. Instead, very little planting has been done. A few fields of high ground and good drainage may have been seeded. Some farmers haven't been able to get into the fields for even routine activities like fence repairing and manure spreading. range from the familiar custom-made delivery type to large tankers and transports. More than 500 wholesale stops and 6,000 retail outlets call for split-second planning of a perishable commodity. The company has always made it a practice to conduct extensive research and experimentation in developing superior products—and is the only one in Orange county with complete laboratory control. 10 Anaheim Gazette - MONDAY, MAY 7, 1924 ANAHEIM, CALIFORNIA Excelsior Creamery Co.'—Orange County's Own"—has built steadily on the basis of quality and service. TITLES FOR MOTHERS PRAGUE (P) — New honors have been made available for Bulgarian mothers in the form of medals. The medals include decorations of the "Glory of Motherhood," and of "Honorary Mother."
