Anaheim’s Industrialists Up Against Uncertainties ANAHEIM’S INDUSTRIAL UNITS right now have both eyes on the national rearmament program to determine what they can do—during the current pre-industrial mobilization phase of the program—to maintain present payrolls in Anaheim or to expand them. It is estimated that some 5000 persons in the Anaheim area derive their livelihood from the Anaheim manufacturing concerns and the citrus products companies. As the industrial mobilization program swings into gear, all the skills and experience of Anaheim employers must be put into play to curtail lay-offs—or to prevent a movement of skilled workmen from the Anaheim area to defense plants along the coast and in the larger cities. The job of the employer is made tough by the dislocations, policy shifts, and confusion in the government procurement program—and because Congress has not given a definite, clear-cut indication of the magnitude of the program. TO TURN from strictly peace-time products to defense work requires a great amount of diligence and thought on the part of local manufacturers. Actually, no matter how carefully they follow production trends in the rearmament program, the local employers have little to go on but their skill and experience to guide them in planning the adjustments of their output for government work. Too, the local manufacturer is faced with accurately gauging the future production of his peace-time product since Washington says production of civilian goods will continue to a degree during the mobilization program. But, to what degree? When will the cut-back in output of civilian goods be determined? What about maintaining the Anaheim labor force intact—so that Anaheimers find it unnecessary to go elsewhere for employment? How about materials, especially so-called “critical” metals and other materials used by such important industries as Kwikset Locks, Anaheim’s growing tool and machinery manufacturing units, construction companies, wire manufacturers, the in-coming Anaheim Is Site of Without It Area W. Water Supply The first ditches were built by the Los Angeles Vineyard company about 1857, and these became the property of the Anaheim Water Company on its organization about 1860. The Anaheim Water Company had two main ditches, both tapping the Santa Ana river. The one first built, known as the Anaheim ditch, tapped the river about six miles above the city. It was built as stated above in 1857, and cost some $5000. It was six feet wide and two feet deep. The other ditch was known as the Cajon ditch and tapped the river in the Bed Rock Canyon, some 18 miles above the city. The ditch was three feet deep and eight feet wide and cost about $100,000. The Cajon ditch was built by the Cajon Ditch Co. Incorporated in 1877. President was J. W. Shanklin, trustees or directors were, But, to what degree? WHAT HAPPENS to the defense program if peace in Korea comes suddenly? Would peace bring a sudden end to government buying, or a sharp cut-back of defense work? Or, would it cause the defense effort to proceed at a more leisurely pace? Would the emphasis change in the type of production? These are some of the problems which actually face many men and women—and their families—who are employers, employees, retailers, and other factors in Anaheim's stability. Fortunately, most of our most prominent civic leaders are also Anaheim business leaders—men who can manage their plants expertly and who have a modern philosophy of plant and industrial teamwork. Next came the development at the Yorba reservoir tract. To protect the gravity flow, the company, in conjunction with the Santa Ana River Development company, purchased from time to time, several thousand acres of land along the river in San Bernardino and Riverside counties, the Santa Ana River development company being a separate corporation. More than $1,000,000 has been spent in land purchases and lawsuits to keep this water coming into Orange county for the replenishment of the Orange county subterranean basin. The county, without this irrigation, could not have attained the place in the citrus and agricultural world that it holds today. The German Society for Interplanetary Research here was told that such a project was possible, but that it would cost at least a billion dollars. The flight would be made in rockets similar to the V-2 type used against England in World War II.
