Employment at Kwikset Has G
(ED. NOTE: The Anaheim Gazette wishes to extend birthday greetings to the fine team of personnel and management at Kwikset Locks. Kwikset was only six years old on May 5, but it is one of the greatest organizations of its kind in the United States. Its good business and reputation are a real tribute to the Anaheimers who manufacture its fine products.
Kwikset Locks, Inc., Anaheim's largest industry, celebrates its sixth anniversary concurrently with the observance of Civic Progress Week. Providing employment for nearly 600 persons, Kwikset has experienced its greatest growth during the 2½ years that the company has operated its factory in Anaheim.
Prior to the transfer of Kwikset operations from Los Angeles to Anaheim, the company had, for the period of nearly a year, given preference to applicants from the Anaheim area, with the view of keeping as many employees as possible when the move was effected.
This policy proved so successful that at the time the move was made, all but four of the 206 persons on the payroll, continued to work for the company in the Anaheim plant.
A few employees still commute from Los Angeles, although the majority now are residents of Anaheim and adjacent communities.
Kwikset's products are sold all over the world, and the company's payroll, running into millions of dollars, is bringing added prosperity to Anaheim, because Kwikset people are Anaheim people, whose purchasing power is reflected in the sales of virtually every business in the city.
Best-known of Kwikset's products is its "400" line of pin-tumbler locksets. This famous line of economy locksets graces the doors of private residences and large-scale housing developments throughout the United States and
ders assure top security to users of Kwikset locks.
Kwikset locksets are hand-finished in satin or polished chrome, satin or polished brass, and satin bronze. Despite the high-quality features characteristic of Kwikset locks, the advanced production techniques, evolved by the Kwikset team of personnel and management have kept the price of these products low in a highly competitive market. This factor has been an important one to Kwikset's growth in industry, and the universal acceptance of the company's products.
The modern design of Kwikset locks offers another advantage to home owners as well as builders and contractors. The entire lockset is quickly installed requiring only two right-angle holes which can be speedily bored with ordinary tools.
For extra speedy installation of its locks on multiple housing projects, Kwikset offers its exclusive jig—a tool which clamps on the door rigidly, reducing the boring operation to virtually an automatic procedure, and insuring maximum accuracy.

In the 18th and 19th Centuries and even before that time, it felt that the larger and heavier the lock the better and safer it would protect its owner. In Bible times the key of the House of David was so large that it had to be carried on the shoulders.
As new methods were discovered and manufacturing processes were developed, locks became smaller and smaller, manufacturers were able to prove that no mechanism was the important part of the lock; if a key didn't fit, door couldn't be readily opened.
Stronger metals have made locking devices obsolete. Householders now recognize that slats and weight alone do not necessarily afford protection. Today, more pressure die-casting, special alloyed metals, and highly accurate temperature controlled heat have perfected methods of lock manufacture unequalled in any other age.
A few years ago, "die casting was a "horrid" word. Metals known as "pot metals" were used in making low-priced articles which would fracture under slippage.
Best-known of Kwikset's products is its "400" line of pin-tumbler locksets. This famous line of economy locksets graces the doors of private residences and large-scale housing developments throughout the United States and the entire world.
Anaheim residents, working at Kwikset are building into these popular five-pin tumbler locks a world-wide reputation for high quality and precision construction. Using top quality materials, Anaheim breadwinners are helping to make the city more widely known for its products of graceful beauty and lifetime dependability.
Much of the equipment in the Kwikset plant was specially designed by Kwikset engineers for efficient production of these hand-home, rugged locks. Pressure-cast parts are produced from dies made in Kwikset's own Tool and Die department—made to extremely close tolerances.
Special electrostatic spray-coating and baking equipment, developed by Kwikset, enhances and preserves the fine hand finish of external parts. Kwikset lock parts are of brass and steel stampings or pressure cast from Zamak No. 5, the same kind of tough, highest alloy used for automobile parts, precision tools, calculator parts and many other precision products. For extra speedy installation of its locks on multiple housing projects, Kwikset offers its exclusive jig—a tool which clamps on the door rigidly, reducing the boring operation to virtually an automatic procedure, and insuring maximum accuracy.
Four types of locksets are featured in the standard line produced by Kwikset. The keyed lockset for entrance doors is made with fixed or free inside knobs. The privacy lockset for bedroom and bathroom doors has a turn-button on the inner knob for locking, and an emergency entry key opening which permits the door to be unlocked from the outside.
For patio, porch and sundeck doors, Kwikset makes a keyless lockset, with a turn-button on the interior knob for locking from the inside. When locked, it cannot be opened from the outside. For passages and closets, Kwikset makes a keyless lockset, providing only a simple latch where such a device is the only requirement. Dummy knobs also are made for linen cabinets, broom closets, sliding doors and other places where no latch is needed, or a snap latch is installed.
In its early days, Kwikset made it an occasion for celebration when the 5000 mark was reached in lock production. Today, in two large factory buildings, Kwikset's production lines turn out thousands of locksets every hour.
Kwikset also manufactures other contractors. The entire lockset is quickly installed requiring only two right-angle holes which can be speedily bored with ordinary tools.

Kwikset Keeps Striving for Employee Gains
When Kwikset moved from Los Angeles to Anaheim in October, 1948, most of the employees came along. Many bought new homes in Anaheim and among the orange groves.
Because there was no restaurant nearby, employees for the most part brought their own lunches.
This distressed Adolf Schopee and Karl Reinhard. As workmen, they knew that hot, nourishing lunches were needed. So they bought an adjacent two-story farmhouse,
moved walls, redecorated, and all-in-all spent $29,500 to transform it into a gleaming, modern cafeteria. Now the employees have the right kind of food, and at cost.
No profit is expected or wanted.
A profit and loss statement is published monthly.

NEW INDUSTRIES FOR KARACHI
KARACHI (P)—The Industries Ministry here has announced that seven new textile mills will shortly be established in Karachi. Permission to open plants was given only to those firms which had already placed orders for machinery and opened letters of credit. Most of the machinery will come from Japan.

Mr. Schoepe was apprenticed to a coppersmith and learned the plumbing and sheet metal trade. He later became a journeyman and traveled throughout the southern part of Germany, where he found it easy to get jobs building racing ears or working as a heating installer and steam fitter. Shortly after his 23rd birthday in 1927, he was able to arrange, through an aunt In St. Louis, for his passage to America.
He lived with this aunt for a while and soon found work in a copper shop. Eager to make a niche for himself in his newly-adopted country, he went to night school to learn English and prepare for his citizenship examinations. In 1932 he obtained his final citizenship papers.

He immediately obtained work in Brooklyn as a blacksmith and enrolled in evening school to study for his citizenship papers.
